I'm going to say that Dylan came to inhabit the space of the song in some very interesting ways.

Another one he's drawn to the lyrics and identifies with specific lines in the song. Draws him in and he gets it out of his system eventually. I would also guess a few of those chords when hit on piano drew him to the song as well as he pondered Hunter and Garcia. 

Dylan doing Garcia/Hunter ballads. That would be a cool project. Can you imagine studio versions of China Doll, Comes A Time, Black Peter, Standing On The Moon. His last album... Grateful Dead covers. :)

Too bad The Band's Rick Danko, Levon Helm, and Richard Manuel aren't around to do the Dead Ballads Project.  I mean Bob's alright, but those guys would have killed this.
