East coast face melter tour info

Forums:

Phil used to say, Keep It Weird!

So, do you like it weird? Really weird? Can you walk that talk?

Because there is a brilliant and TRULY weird trio hitting a bunch of places I've never heard of on the east coast this week, starting in Philadelphia this Tuesday.

Scott Amendola on drums, the amazing Phillip Greenlief on saxophone and a last minute change, Nels Cline on guitar.

You won't be tapping your toes to this music or whistling the tunes after, but it will challenge your ears and stretch your brain. I saw this trio last year and it was the best show I saw in 2024.

Sept. 16 @ Solar Myth, Philadelphia

Sept. 17 @ Myrtle, East Providence RI

Sept. 18 @ The Parlor Room, Northampton MA

Sept. 19 @ Portland Conservatory of Music, Portland ME

Sept. 20 @ Brewbaker's, Keene NH

Sept. 22 @ College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor ME

Sept. 23 @ Potsdam Public Library, Potsdam NY

Do people actually live in any of those towns? If any of you are close to one I really think you should go.

Because it will be weird.

And fucking great.

GTTS!

east coast is real lucky with the quantity of good jazz/free improv type music they get over there i tell hya hwhat

>>>>So, do you like it weird? Really weird? Can you walk that talk?

yes, yes, and more yes!  Sounds right up my alley, but i don't see OK stops in there :(

Dag

If only i had more notice

Interesting. Not really my cup of tea but I'd check it out.

I'm surprised they are not stopping in Balto at the "new" Keystone Korner -- a direct descendant of the original West Coast club. They feature a lot of esoteric jazz.

Yeah, if this type of music relied on selling cups of tea it would disappear quickly.

It's too weird, too "outside" for almost everyone, but it's brilliant to those who can hear it.

I hesitated to post this because I thought it might scare off those who might be near one of these shows, it's not music that translates well to video or recording, but just so folks know what I'm talking about I'll post a set from the show I saw last year.

I enjoy a variety of musical tea's, and this is some seriously extreme tea, but THAT right there is my cup of tea.

Turn the blender on Liquefy and let's go  :)    Good stuff, Lance, Thanks!

Was the Nels Cline sub just a Philly thing? I assume just for that gig.
The Portland, ME date is at a TINY place, maybe we'll take a swing & check it out?

I would imagine every one of these venues are tiny, and bass player Trevor Dunn was originally the third player but he had to bow out at the last minute, so Cline is now on all those dates.

I'm sure the more "traditional" trio would have been excellent, but Cline really brings something unique and twisted to it.

When I first started seeing Nels Cline this was the type of music he was always playing, in tiny little places with 20 - 50 people in the audience. Then after joining Wilco he became much more well known, and when I'd see him doing something like this suddenly there would be a bunch of Wilco fans there, expecting something more accessible. About 20 minutes into the sets people would start leaving.

This music isn't for everyone and I was always impressed with the Wilco fans who would stay.

i like this weirdness, thanks for sharing!

it always reminds me tho of what paul mccartney said on howard of the beatles "avant garde" period

"avant garde a clue"

cracks me up every time

We are headed out shortly, for the Portland date tonight!
Not expecting Wilco at all, which is fine.
Bring on the weird jazz!!

Alright!

Way to go to the show.

And if you're going because I recommended it I'll pay for your tickets if you don't like it.

(I say that knowing the tix will likely be somewhere between $20 - $30 each. I'm honorable, but only by degree)

Please report back!

Holy moly. Due to your description, I knew we were in for an interstellar treat.
In all my years in Portland, I had never been to this venue, literally a converted church in a historic, upscale, residential neighborhood.
We were amongst a crowd of perhaps 30 people, all of whom probably come to support the monthly jazz series, or the jazz school program associated with it.

We took seats at the back, knowing we would likely want to stand & groove (We had a little paper for the occasion)>
They launched right in to "out there". Hard to say whether anyone was there for those musicians specifically.
The ticketed listing never updated the tour-change, so literally nobody but us knew Cline would be there.

Cline was getting such abstract sounds from his rig, sometimes my eyes & brain couldn't agree on whether he was producing which sounds.
An aspect I loved was that they played through, from note one, to final note, they gave the audience zero opportunity to clap at all.
I don't think anyone there was prepared for the journey they would embark on. Well, we were :)

I wish this was a forum where a reasonable person could post a picture or video, lol.
At the end, Greenleif (who just moved to Maine!) said, "We made that for you. We are doing something different each night, ..."
And he went on to explain the last-minute Cline subbing in, and the fact that they all have 30 years of experience together,

Lance, this was truly a treat, Not sure how many years since I discovered a show purely because I looked at the Zone.
The Zone still delivers, this show set the tone for an improvisational weekend of receptivity and reflective interconnectedness.
Thank you.

Sweet, very glad you folks enjoyed it, but I'm sure the players appreciated your presence more.

Amendola plays variations of that type of music in similar venues all the time here in the Bay Area, and attendance is pretty much always in the 15 - 30 range so I'm sure they were happy to see you there.

>>>Greenleif (who just moved to Maine!)<<<

Yeah, bummer for us in the BA but good for you on the east side. I think that guy is great and everything I've seen him do is at least interesting and usually brilliant. I'd keep my eye open for him playing often in your area.

As we get older we tend to stick with what we know, so good effort on trying something different. Now, try explaining what you heard to your friends.

Good luck with that.

Cam, this is a forum where a "reasonable person" can post a photo, and there are a few of us reasonable people who would be happy to do it for you if it's not working for you; send it via email. I know I can only do it because I know how to do it, it might be counter-intuitive if I tried to learn it anew.

Lol Judit! I thought that comment might bring you in.
I honestly took mostly videos at this show.
I do recall trying to post a pic here when Viva was new, and had no luck.
I'll give it another shot. I think I eventually figured it out on the old Zone.

As we get older we tend to stick with what we kCoz. <<<<

Ya you said it right, Lance.
