The Eleven

Have a favorite version I should listen to?

Pretty sure I've heard a DS>SS>11>Lovelight a few times. Could've been from the same show. What do I know? The Eleven is my favorite song. Good Primal Dead. Anyway, give me something good to listen to.

This was a pretty fun little bust out

I love the song only not so much when Weir sings the whole thing but I remember sort of a compromise in Furthur where the band layered the vocals (similar to the Q arrangement, but then bob would step up and re-sing some of if...finishing with 'this is the time of what NOW, instead of singing 'this is the time OF WHAT'..the way it was done back in the day. I don't like that he added 'Now' and I'm not a fan of him dragging the end vocals out either.

I am a fan of some of the versions that didn't take the traditional path, popping up out of a china cat for e.g.

..but here is one of my favorites of those. .

In the early days of Darkstar they would sometimes open the show with darkstar then go into feedback.....there are alot of missing shows from this era..but one survived..the presumed darkstar is cut and the tape picks up in the feedback. .

..then out of nowhere,  bam! The Eleven! the jam is intense and raw. Then comes the St. Stephen. .after the eleven. And this is one of the first st. Stephens so it sounds more folksy and like an irish jig or something.  They are still working on the lyrics but I think is worth checking out:

A few other dates where the eleven isn't coupled with st stephen are..

4-5-69 cryptical envelopment>the eleven

4-23-69 caution>the eleven

5-24-69 china cat>the eleven

2-5-70 masons>the eleven

..with phil In 99 summer sessions he did a nice Eleven Jam with kimock the first night at the greek.

The Q,  before they were singing it, they were jamming it as well and I attended a show in Pittsburgh spring 01 that had a nice Eyes>the eleven jam

And when I finally heard one with lyrics in Chicago October 2000 I absolutely loved it.

..for those that aren't afraid of a little 95 dead, I wonder if you would agree that there was a short Eleven Jam after the Truckin 5-20-95 vegas. You'll have to check out the video of it over in the summer95 thread

But if 9-28-75 is officially an eleven jam (it's a stretch) then 5-20-95 is in there somewhere too.imo

^I now remember the Pittsburgh Q show 4-25-01 was a Caution Jam.. not the eleven jam..and I'm not certain the Q ever did an Eleven Jam (no lyrics) actually.

Q, 7-7-91 Red Rocks Help-Slip-11-Slip-Franklin's great stuff. 20 minute 11

Nice suggestions. Keep em coming. Good jams all day on community radio. I'll get the The Elevens tomorrow. I really like it when it comes out of the William Tell part with the bass thumping. Have a great day, y'all's

Community radio might need to take a back seat. I need some Dead!

Gonna check out this China Cat>Eleven!

good pick ben the bear

The 11 into 12(Midnight Hour) would have been a cool NYE segue.

A few weeks ago I wanted to start a thread about The Eleven, then spaced it, but now it's here!  I was trying to learn to drum to the time signature while singing the lyrics loudly -- is there a trick to learn it when playing in a group?  I found reference to the time signature on Dodd's site or some other GD blog... and it recommended to drum in an 11-beat set like this: 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2

At the same time, I was learning how to use Zoom for work, and then imagined a Zoner Zoom jam session, LOL.  Good idea -- or not?

Not gonna skip a 27 min Lovelight. Listened to the entire show. Would recommend.

Illegal honorable mention; the David Nelson Band on 11/11/11 at 11:11at the  palm ballroom was pretty fantastic

(The 11 into Gloria at the eleven ranch back in February was darn cool too

I so love that song

perhaps more back in like 69 live at the Carousel.....

i get more wound up than I do for most other songs

I didn't name any of my kids the 11 tho.  Two of them did get song titles in their names.  But I digress

>>> and it recommended to drum in an 11-beat set like this: 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2

Also the beginning of "Whipping Post", if you feel so inclined. Fun rhythm to play.

"Q, 7-7-91"

What's wrong with this picture?

The Eleven Jam on 8/13/68 is as close the band ever got to "it" in the studio.
