Families Belong Together June 30th Event!

Donald Trump and his administration are cruelly separating children from their families.

But we won't allow it to continue. On June 30, we're rallying in Washington, D.C., and around the country to tell Donald Trump and his administration to stop separating kids from their parents!

Trump and his administration have been systematically criminalizing immigration and immigrants, from revoking Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) to ramping up intimidating ICE tactics.

Join us on June 30 to send a clear message to Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress: Families Belong Together!

https://act.moveon.org/event/families-belong-together_attend1/search/

Wouldn't these things be more effective if they were held when he was in town? Trump won't be in DC on a Saturday, and I don't think he gives a single flying fuck about any protests. In fact, I'm quite sure it just encourages him to be more of an asshole.

Kenny - He always runs away... He's a chicken shit!

That we know for sure....

So we're still gonna show up.

Todays 5-4 Supreme Court Ruling on the Muslim Travel Ban.

Is even MORE reason to protest.

The Republican/Trump Administration just separated American Muslim families from visiting and visiting them abroad.

Look at the link posted.

They will be all over the Country.

There's a search function that will allow you to find the one closest to you by just entering your zip code.

I'll be at the one in Charlottesville! yes

I don't recall this outrage when the Obama administration was doing the same thing.

But carry on, it's good for a cathartic release if nothing else.

Well,Thom,  what exactly is the difference of what happened during the Obama administration? Specifically  please.

Nothing in the procedures have changed?

To say the Trump administration is handling the immigration crisis like Obama, Bush or any other president is absurd! The hateful rhetoric and lack of empathy that Trump displays daily has tarnished our nation in the eyes of the world. The lack of civility now is pervasive and it starts at the top-Trump. He will not change his tactics and is doubling down as the Republican Congress doesn't have the stones to oppose him in any shape or form. The tariff issue may be bring him down as we will all suffer the consequences. Perilous times!

>>> I'll be at the one in Charlottesville!

That's awesome Scarlet.

As of last night, over 700 cities participating!

Signed,

- Not a paid protester

I'm in.

Trump won't be in DC on a Saturday>>>

He spends most of his time at mara largo and is NEVER seen in public around the local area, most folks around here don't like him. He's hiding.

I don't recall this outrage when the Obama administration was doing the same thing.>>>

Well Thom, why didn't the caring and compassionate GOP point out Obamas wrongdoing then?

>>>>I don't recall this outrage when the Obama administration was doing the same thing.

Give Trump credit where credit is due: He has inspired many more Americans (notably women) to participate more actively, and express themselves more heartily, regarding the state/fate of our Nation.

Johnny D makes a great point. Sometimes it takes something really awful to happen, or someone really awful to be in power, for people to get motivated to initiate changes. Trump is that thing, that person. I can't wait to see what happens in November. With the huge changes that took place here in Virginia last November, this next election is shaping up to be one to watch.

One to vote in.

Someone please explain why illegal immigration is such a wonderful thing.

Are you people Owners of Chicken and Cow factories ??

I understand that those kind of tycoons make vast profits with underpaid illegal alien labor.  Doesn't matter  which Cartoon is in the Oval Office.  Cheap labor makes more profits for Corporate Overlords.

If I want to work in Mexico,  Canada,  Uruguay,  Portugal,  New Zealand,  or almost any other nation,  I have to  fill out tons of paperwork and comply with the immigration laws of that Country.  Otherwise,  I get "Deported" and "Jailed"  because I "Broke the Law".

Everyone here (USA) except American Indians are "immigrants" ,  just like Canada.  I'm all for legal immigration,  bring your skills and talents here to make the place better.  Fill out the paperwork on the way.   Bring money,  while you're at it.

I'll go out on a limb and share some of my not-nearly-informed-enough views:

1. I don't think that illegal immigration is a wonderful thing.  Breaking the law is obviously illegal; however, are the laws in alignment with what the community needs/wants?  (I've heard of some marijuana users who have been known to break some laws).  I personally believe that there should be a well-informed, well-balanced, cooperative attempt from our law makers to make effective laws.  And having our leaders exclude immigrants based on blanket stereotypes of race, religion, country of origin, is just wrong IMHO.  Base your decision on the individual not the preconception.

2. I feel that if a country has ruined the standard of living (health and safety being the highest priority) of another region or country through colonialism or war (or both), that country should carry some responsibility for the well-being of the people in those areas that were changed for the worse by the country.  Why are people taking great risks (and dying?) to leave their countries (Syria, El Salvadore, Haiti, etc, etc, etc..) to try to live in USA and Europe?  Should the stronger nations show some compassion?

3. Should we feel OK that kids are torn from their parents when families arrive to our country for any reason?  I don't think so, especially if the parent(s) is trying to follow internationally held standards for treatment of refugees (who are actually human beings - not too different from you or me).

4. On the positive side, I get so much joy from my diverse community of people who live in it.  If they are not actively making my life worse, I don't think that they need to be arrested and taken away from their current community, school, work, family, friends, etc.  During World Cup season, it's especially fun to hang out with people whose families come from all over the World.  Heck, I even tolerate the Bay Area residents who still root for the Yankees and Red Sox (they should be speakin' Californian, Goddammit!).

5. Not to mention, I grew up in Salinas Valley, the Salad Bowl of the Nation, and I never saw any white boys endear themselves to picking produce.  My social work agency has had vacancies for years because not too many qualified workers want the salary we receive.  It's even worse for our board-and-care homes, where we expect caring, smart, responsible, reliable people to care for the most vulnerable in our population - all for the same wages that you can receive for flipping a burger (which isn't very desirable to many, either).  A bunch of immigrants are providing these services and I appreciate what they do, because not too many natural born Americans are lining up to do this.

Anyhoo, this immigration problem certainly needs to be fixed, but we need some leaders with the huevos to get it done.

Immigrants can work high paying jobs too and would obviously prefer it. People are people.  Sounds like you are paying under market wages and the only people that accept the jobs are those that have no other choice.

There are a over a quarter million unfilled IT jobs in the US that would be instantly filled if we changed our immigration policy to prioritize that. That would be quite a boost in our nation's productivity.

To Disco Stu's point, I'd rather our immigration policy prioritized those who are educated, willing to follow the legal process and already have the means to care for themselves.

>>>>I'd rather our immigration policy prioritized those who are educated, willing to follow the legal process and already have the means to care for themselves.

I'm not being sarcastic: Isn't that our priority already?

I suppose there is the debate about prioritizing reunification of family vs. professional qualifications.  But doesn't business/industry have something to do with recruiting employees from outside the US?

^honest question.

And I suppose it's also an employers/owners rights vs. workers' rights issue (who should be benefiting more from immigration?)

>>>>>Sounds like you are paying under market wages and the only people that accept the jobs are those that have no other choice.

^That's government spending for you.  Obviously a hot topic: whether tax-payers should pay for services to the less fortunate (disabilities, etc).  Thus, depending on what side of the coin you are on, caretakers are either paid too much or not enough, I suppose.

>>>I'd rather our immigration policy prioritized those who are educated, willing to follow the legal process and already have the means to care for themselves

This.

Having a permanent, undocumented underclass in our country is neither morally or socially acceptable.

It gives the permanent documented underclass someone to blame their problems on.

Or maybe feel superior to.

"Illegal" immigration is not a wonderful thing. It's a necessity when your parents, brothers or sisters have been killed by gang members in El Salvador and they're coming for you and your kids. What kind of parent would not flee a life threatening situation to save their children? Until you've lived in that environment don't prejudge others actions. I have family that fled Central America after their father was killed by the gangs and were recruiting her brothers. Go visit that area and then come back and tell me what's real.

^Won't a "path to citizenship" help in this area?

Otherwise, there will continue to be more and more permanent, undocumented residents, right?

And it's not like our government is actively encouraging people of lesser means to come into our country.  Or is it?

I'm constantly inspired by the immigrant families I work with and their presence in my community MAKES IT GREAT.  We have managed for many years to balance our well-earned rep as the world's destination when no one else will help and our need to keep the population from exploding.  Sometimes more people come in, sometimes less.  Some administrations deport more than others, some admit more refugees than others.  But no one til now has tried to put everyone in jail for crossing and no one has tried so brazenly to punish children to punish the parents (although Prop 187 got pretty close).  Certainly no other President has used such naked racism to foment hate against Hispanic people before.  It still shocks me.

I am always personally concerned for the brave people who make the treks across the mountains, and I know I am hypocritical to cheer for them individually while accepting that many will be caught and deported. But the willingness to do that is inspiring and shows that we do get people who are strong and motivated and willing to work their asses off.  I've been in this game a long time, and I was livid at Bill Clinton's immigration bill, but I don't think it takes much 'splainin' to recognize that we have crossed the rubicon here. When they can't even reunite the families after they (supposedly) abandoned the policy of separation, we know we are being led by people with no respect for non-white humanity or recognition that immigration, legal and otherwise, is an essential ingredient of American greatness.  Not just immigration by educated people, but immigration by people who came from nothing and broke the law to get here and kicked ass by virtue of their own characters.  Sure, let's bring in more Chinese agricultural grad students to help us grow rice, but lets also welcome the people who are so committed to this country that they will walk across a desert with nothing and work a thousand hours a week just to give their kids a better life, and to make our country a more beautiful place at the same time.  That's the best of the best of the best in my book.

^Amen, Sister!

i just went to el salvador.

someone prolly said this but not all our ancestors came in legally  and they ALL came for a better life.

Bring us your educated, your rich, your predominantly white people with a skill we desire...  Zat how it goes?

Tearing kids away from parents seems wrong on all levels.

I'm glad people are outraged and acting up.

Immigrants are great but cheering because they work for a wage we call exploitation ain't cool.

The working class need better wages and affordable homes.

^Amen, Brother!

Big day today across America.

Hope all that can will participate.

Take pics. and I look forward to hearing about your experiences.

Be safe and most importantly be heard.

- Peace

Huge turnout yesterday at the Capitol building, Mrs Fog said 600 people were arrested. You can bet today in DC will have a huge crowd.

"Socially acceptable"?

Was that said with your pinky in the air while drinking tea?

It's good to be a white male in America in 2018, isn't it? Yea, brother.

This was Sacramento today.

DOWN With Trump ! WAY DOWN !! nonono

>>>"Socially acceptable"?

Correct. Having a permanent underclass of citizens with no rights isn't socially acceptable in America. That's not how it works here.

>>>Was that said with your pinky in the air while drinking tea?

I drink coffee.

>>>It's good to be a white male in America in 2018, isn't it? Yea, brother.

You're in a better position to comment on that than I am.

States with the highest percentages of White Americans, as of 2007:

Vermont 96.2%

Maine 95.5%

New Hampshire 95.0%

West Virginia 94.3%

Iowa 92.9%

Idaho 92.1%

Wyoming 91.6%

Minnesota 90.94%

Speaking of states with lots of white (and delightsome) people, here's Utah's Capitol today.

Check out the snipers on the roof of the White House.

One false move...

It sounds like the Eugene gathering was well attended and friendly. I'm sorry I wasn't there but I was well represented by many friends.

More signs from around the nation. Some real good ones.

Doesn't seem to be working. I'll delete the http stuff in front. Or try www.huffingtonpost.com

>>You're in a better position to comment on that than I am.

Actually I think you have that backwards - being with so many white males all the time gives one poor perspective on the privilege of being a white male n 2018 America.

You - living in a much more diverse culture probably know that privilege much better by comparison to those around you who are not white.

Vermont's state flower is a loaf of Wonder Bread.

No way! Really?

DC Women's march and students March each had about a million more people than this event.

Great turnout yesterday, paper said 1,000 +

Was awesome to see so many people engaged in the cause.

What was probably the most moving for me was the kids and their signs.

We didn't take any crowd photos this time due to how large our signs were, definitely appreciate the ones posted in this thread.

Really does feel good to stand up with like minded folks.

The Trump/Republican regime will stop at nothing to carry their heinous agenda forward.

We'll be there to let them know...

"This is not who we are, this is unacceptable and enough is enough."

Less than 100 years ago both sides of my family were immigrants
