As Far Back As It Goes

Wow, way back indeed

John Entwistle had recently died, Vegas style

BK did you ever find a nice BG216?

PLEASE! NO MORE KONA KRAP IN THIS FOLDER & CHILL OUT ON THE PERSONAL ATTACK THREADS!

> BK did you ever find a nice BG216?

I can't speak to the BG216, but it seems BK did find a nice big bag of the kind in Oxford, Maine in 1988.

Wish there was some Kona crap in there.

I missed the Kona era by a little bit, but he was mentioned often in my early zone years. Many, including myself were at times accused of being him. He sure left a dent in the black screen.

Oh I forgot to mention there's gold in them thar hills. I bought it at $265/oz. it's now $311. Still a good bye.<<

Glanced through  a few comments.

Wow, I do believe those are the first Kona posts I've ever read. I knew that he presented himself as the "inside" man who knew it all, and after reading just that one thread I can see how he created such a presence, and such a stir on the ol' Philzone.

My recollections are that he was ultimately discredited as a fake and a fraud. There are still a few old-timers around here, is that how it all went down?

And wow, that second thread Mike posted.... woooooo.

BrianK, swingin' from the heals back in the day!

I don't think admin would allow THAT type of "conversation" on the modern black screen.

I believe Brian still posts here, any recollections from that time BK?

>>>>> he was ultimately discredited as a fake and a fraud.

Yup. Can't remember who broke the dam, though, and outed him such that the zoner masses finally believed he was a fake.

> I don't think admin would allow THAT type of "conversation" on the modern black screen.

But, but...

Why are hurricanes normally named after women?

When they come they're wild and wet, but when they go they take your house and car with them.

Thanks for those links to those Kona postings from back in the day. I was on the Zone back then but don't have a recollection of the Kona postings.  Loved reading those.  Any idea if Kona is living and breathing.  Hope they are well!  Great stories and great writing!  Always love reading first hand accounts from those who lived the Haight/Asbury sceen.

>>>But, but... there's gold in them thar hills<<<

It is the gold in the hills that can justify a questionable thread.

But then, I'm not a moderator with all the responsibility that goes with that.

It's always easy to judge from the cheap seats.

(But gold IS gold, and often isn't easy to find)

> a questionable thread

Those were much simpler times. 21 years in internet time is like light years from the so-called social sensibilities we live under now. So it comes down to a matter of marketing metaphors, I think, to be able to publicly share and collectively enjoy some of those dusty old nuggets now.

A Zoner Reunion might be a bit too much of a stretch because there aren't that many from those days who post here today. BK was all over the place back then, and he still graces us with his presence from time to time, and AIQ had a few things to say back then and now too. But mostly the posts I'm reading were written by names I know from lore at best and many aren't known to me at all. (I created a zone account in January 2001 when I came looking for CDs of the 12/31/2000 show at the HJK, which Tapecat helped me out with, but then I didn't make my way back here/there until Further was well underway.)

So if not a reunion, what then might provide a cloak of respectability for rooting in the dirt from days past? What indeed?

How about this then? A Black Screen Retrospective. You know. The kind of thing you would usually have to drive all the way to UC Santa Cruz for just to gaze upon bits and pieces from the GD's past, only the virtual variety with much less famous players. I think that might work, and it'll just have to do until TPTB shut us down at least.

Wow. It's getting weird in here.

What kind of mushrooms were on that pizza?

yea, ***the daze***

lololol

i will def check the links out

kona was never as bad as newfun

then again, maybe they were the same person!!

and the weird life of the zone proper was an ever changing, same ol same ol house of that thing where families bone then murder each other

the best of PHIL times !!!

just. fantastic!

((((Botb&Red))))

think they are still going strong!

not so much me and the baby daddy

still: i have the first zone baby on record lol

That is a blast from the bast.  All sorts of good zoners in there.   Kind of crazy rereading that shit years later.

Love it.

Gotta give some Inspiration, move me brightly credit to Timmy Hoover for the threads he started where he dredged up posts from our past. The mechanics of doing that are different now, but hopefully the effects are much the same.

>>I believe Brian still posts here, any recollections from that time BK?

Holy shit, what a trip reading that stuff. I was a fairly prolific poster back then (as you saw). Yeah, I was dirty, but it was all in good fun and most people didn't care. If you scroll down on Mike's first link there's a "Beaver alert" thread that's hilarious.

I remember those times well, especially the Kona shit. It got really bad when he started with the fake cancer, and this place started to eat its own tail.

>>BK did you ever find a nice BG216?

Nah, I ended up getting a "skull in Sand Europe" poster

I met hundreds of Zoners back then, many at shows, but dozens also stayed at my house at one point or another. We had a pretty badass Zoner contingency at Alpine Family Reunion.

For one set of PL&F shows in Burlington I got a hotel room with a Zoner I'd never met in person, Crypt. People thought I was nuts and was going to get my head chopped off or something. We had a grand old time and dozens partied in our room after the show. Security kept coming to the room because of smoke and noise. Breakfast was included in the room, and they allowed room service, I asked if there were limits and they said "no."

Cryppie's response was, "I'm going to tear that free breakfast a new asshole!" And he did!

I haven't found any newfun stuff yet, Jill, the Wayback Machine is kind of hit-or-miss with their archiving, but I'll keep my eye out.

Kona is fairly well archived though it seems, both in his (?) own posts, and posts about him, like this one in a Gunner thread titled My appologies to all who ive pissed off:

http://web.archive.org/web/20021216075756/http://www.philzone.org/discus...

holy crap I've been lurking for a long time.  I remember a lot of this.  Back in the day I mostly dabbled in BnPs.  who remembers that!!?

I really don't remember the Newfun crap. I was here but if went right by me. I think that was a time when a bunch of idiots showed up, Hamboy being one of them. Lots of douches trying to make names for themselves and no so much laughter.

I do wonder what happened to Juggy and his Peanuts. He left here when he found out the second one wasn't his.

> Hamboy

I showed up at the HepC folder in 2005. Did not gather the courage to venture into other stuff until yrs later.

I always felt that he missed the boat when he decided to keep what he did and let the hepC threads go away forever. There was so much good there.  Information, support, comedy and other entertainment and a lot of love. It was real. And it was special.

wow ! hilarious

find some newfun stuff ..caitlin serena murphy ???  poor young rosn

Cat Hair Nugs

Poz's mixtapes

ponchos gif.s

music trading board (how i wound up here)

Frank3

I'm working on it, frank. There's more gaps than stuff to be found, but some really interesting rabbit holes for sure.

> caitlin serena murphy

Is it serena? I think I ran across some serafina stuff today.

I remember when it seemed that every other thread was about Nick.

not sure i like it.

i like my words to melt away.....

That's a strange thing to post on the internet, Turtle.

....Kookzone anyone ???

its very strange for me to see screenshots of posts that were made during my time on the zone posted as a "blast from the past", im so used to being the noob with the least amount of show experience, its surreal to see posts i remember being present for presented in this way.

often it feels like i was one of the last new members on the zone. maybe jakestraw came after me? idk.

Him and BK had some kind of sex thing

i cant let this thread pass by without requesting a full rundown on the BK/kona sex thing. im waiting with baited breath briank.

From my recollection it was some joke he made about me being his pool boy. Of course, "pool boy" became a euphemism for "sex slave" for his wife, or something like that.

In the general scheme of Kona, I'm surprised it made a list of events.

21 years just fell offa me like nothing.
fuuuuuck

> From my recollection it was some joke he made about me being his pool boy.

Screenshot_20230930_065611.png

damn, even a decade-ish later when i found my way to the zone, i remember hearing stuff about pool boys

boko was a favorite of mine for sure

I started just before Louie L.  passed on. Some of the remembrance threads were long, loving, and thoughtful.

The good old IP addresses. The Zoner sleuths wanted them to identify the socks and riff-raf. I highly doubt they served their purpose.

Someone say Tapecat?

Phil Zone Poster 2007 Tape Cat (600x800)_1.jpg

My favorite thing about the old zone was that dude doobious legit found his dad on here

the neon king, something or other

And that Phish kid that was sick. The love he received.....

I met a young lady on Reddit recently who was looking for folks who might have known her dad on the old black screen. His handle there was typical daydream (myfriendthedrummer), and he  was kind of a late arrival there, and then passed not too long before the old place closed. I believe he met up with Disco Stu for cheesesteaks once, and his daughter mentioned that Stu went to his memorial service.

^I think his name was Jason, Mike. And your details are correct. I remember that his daughter was very grateful to Stu for his kindness at her dad's funeral.

I believe you're right, joe. Jason definitely rings a bell.

For all the nonsense here, we really step up when things get real.

Not exactly what I thought they meant when I was warned that I would have flashbacks that could happen at any time, but re-reading this stuff isn't so bad.

Tulsa's tales from the Kum & Go are missed.

agree ken

those were hilarious...oh the days of old

where is zippy ?

Who?

*toke*

I was in touch with Zippy as recently as a year or so ago. As the years have rolled on he's become a bigger and bigger dick.

There is this interesting dynamic where the zone turned to be the noise of a few individuals - Kona, Zip, Gun, W, Nick - forever rotating.   There's a bit of trumpism in it, just make noise to be heard but people came for the entertainment.  Or to poke or yell or complain.

The NOISE of the PZ turned out to be the noise of a few individuals . Lots of regular folks on there too, just not being so loud.

The big Friday reveal where somebody was going to be unmasked as a sock puppet - that shit I don't miss.  Would just mentally block and ignore 95% of the BS that would turn more sensitive people away.

The other 5% was good stuff that kept me here.  Miss Negman's musings on the world.  He should come back.

JACK snorting dried habaneros and Nups flying shoes

I believe I've found the Kona gold mine, and the links all work. You can get there with the link below the image.

You're cracking me up with the sentimental crap, frank. You great big butthole, you. lol

Damn, I had almost no posts in those Kona threads.

briank, on the sidelines of history

>>briank, on the sidelines of history

It was a conscious decision. There was way too much widespread drama.

I still chuckle a lot at the thought of ping pong's posts.

ping pong was another favorite. IMO a lot of really funny trolls ended up getting lumped in with what basically amounts to hippie men children yelling at each other towards the end there. of course there were a few like zip who skirted that line, and imo it was never really obvious if that was intentional or just how they were.

im glad the small amount of actual personal vitriol i contributed to the zone ended up getting patched up with said zoner IRL.

I'm kind of surprised, and maybe a little offended, that Boko and Ping Pong never paid us a visit here on Viva.

What I want to know is where does the time go?

Some of those threads are old enough to drink.

Then I open one and see a DeWit post. She was a queen of the shamey finger, because in her mind she knew much more than any of the rest of us.

Then there are the one post threads where the original poster left everyone else silent.

Many have moved on, but I am glad to still be on the Zone.

Wasn’t it rev buddy that did that poll/survey thing for some kinda of school or teaching final

i remember getting that , wow that was a way back

and yeah, dewit loved playing her part

wow...what a bunch :)

>>>>>>I'm kind of surprised, and maybe a little offended, that Boko and Ping Pong never paid us a visit here on Viva.

oh I think they're here in one form or another.
