I took a 2 hr drive due west into north central Oklahoma to Pawhuska and Fairfax this past Saturday on a tour sponsored by KOSU radio, NPR, concerning facts and locations filmed in Fairfax, Oklahoma for the movie Killers of the Flower Moon. The best stop was the actual home of Lillie Morrell Burkhart, just outside of Fairfax. beautiful rolling hills, dark sky country, very remote. The tour started at 12:00 and concluded at around 5pm.
This was a poster of Peyote Churches on the Osage Nation Reservation in a hallway of Lillie's home. The Osages were the only Nation in Ok to purchase their territory.
Below is a pic of the original Certificate of Land Allotment for Lillie. All Osages were given a total of 3 allotments (3 separate rounds) of land, all three totaling 650 acres for each adult Osage member, although each allotment was not necessarily next to one another. The Osage Reservation totaled 1.5 million acres. Her house is quite remote. i would most likely be a gun owner where she lived.
Some facts which were told to us by the Osage themselves: the original movie script was written in 2016 and presented to the Osage. Upon reading, they asked Scorsese and a few others if they would be willing to visit Fairfax and have a dinner discussion. Scorsese agreed. Afterwards, he realized how far off the script was from the awful facts of the systematic eradication of Osage nation members, men, women and children - mostly women - that he rewrote the movie script. Leonardo was also there and originally wanted to play the role of the lead FBI agent, which was given to Jesse Plemons. After listening to the Osage's story, Leonardo asked to have his role changed to that of Ernest Burkhart. Casting in Fairfax with the Osage nation started in 2018. The Osage members we spoke to said the movie was still Hollywood-ized, but much better than the original script. The scene where DeNiro paddles DeCaprio's ass was filmed in the original 2nd floor of the Masonic building in Fairfax.
The main complaint though was that the character of Ernest Burkhart was portrayed as actually loving Lillie, which they said was an absolute lie. They reinforced this fact with the story of his children dumping his entire urn and ashes into an undisclosed river, parting with nothing but 4 letter words for their father, who brought so much shame to the Burkhart name. We were also advised to please read the book, which is much more brutally factual than the movie.
They did say that everyone was incredibly respectful on set, and that the baby naming ceremonies, the wedding ceremony and the scene where the mother passes into the next realm with her spirit guide and mother and father nearby was full, authentic Osage dress and ritual, and not a Hollywood version. We ended the tour that evening with an authentic Osage dinner, unseasoned and delicious, beef stew and vegetables. Afterwards, there was a 1 hour discussion with 4 Osage members: two who were support for the actors, and two actual actors in the movie itself. One lady was Dana Daylight, who played Anna Sanford. Dana spoke a full Osage prayer in Osage just before the dinner.
Killers of the Flower Moon is streaming for free on Apple tv currently.
Forgot to mention that the real life Ernest Burkhart also tried to murder his own two children, the same ones who dumped his urn in an undisclosed river.
In the scene in which the house blew up - which happened in real life - Ernest tried having both of his children "stay the night", intentionally, but one of them developed a fever, and Lillie insisted that they both be kept at home that night.
The reality of what went on, how uncaring whites were to the crimes happening, and how few paid for their crimes evades belief.
On a nicer note, we did learn how to say, I Love You in Osage language: We Ke Ok Da (pronounced We - Key - Oak - Dah )
Below is Lillie's real life living room. The red glass lamps hanging above were two of the few items left by Ernest after he sold as much as he could after Lillie's death. We were told they are now as valuable as the house and that "stupidity paid off".
The lady sitting at the end of the table is Osage, and she taught Lillie Gladstone and the two actresses who played her sisters to "whale", which is the Osage mourning cry. This can be seen in the scene right after Lillie's mother passed on and the three sisters were standing in front of the house mourning. The lady in red in te back corner is Lillie's estate curator and a tour de force with the BIA in Washington D.C. for Native American rights. Very informative, kind, lovely and impressive folks.
It's a bit out of focus but looks like a shirt I once had. If it's the one I'm thinking of (can't remember the actual design), it's an official GD shirt. I would have bought it in 76 or 77 - maybe at Winterland.
