Fela

Forums:

I've been spinning the Best of the Black President compilations over the past two weeks.

Great stuff.

Agreed

Sorrow Tears and Blood is stand out track for me.

Fela's gifts as a composer are on full display on that gem. What a groove. Absolutely incredible music.

I've never heard of them. Can you post a cool link, Mark?

Those best of BP are good recordings, and his catalog runs deep. I love the horns, the groove, the drumming, all of it.   Check out "expensive shit" album.  His song and story about the police sifting through his feces to find a joint he swallowed is nuts. The man lived a crazy life and produced some great music.  I like to put him on when I go for long drives. it puts me in a trance. You cant mention Fela without giving a nod to the drummer Tony Allen.  As a drummer, I can say he is one of my top 10 favs. Plus he arranged most of Fela's stuff. Big fan of both. darn it, now I gotta listen to some...

Tony Allen is an absolutely insane drummer. I didn't realize how involved he was in composing Fela's music. Very cool.

Fela, you say. Here is one of my favorites from The Best of The Black President - "Water No Get Enemy": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQBC5URoF0s

IF YOU ENJOY FELA, try Antibalas modern day NY boys who pay big time tribute to the Fela but make it their own

Wish they toured more

Antibalas is fantastic. They toured with MMJ and sat in on some fun collaborations.

Do they bring the horns? gotta have horns. ZOMBIE ZOMBIE! right face! salute!

Budos Band are pretty good. I had the chance to see them at High Sierra a number of years ago and really enjoyed it.
