I saw Bob play that song once. Before he played it he had just walked on stage, reached into his pocket for what I assume was a guitar pick and when he pulled his hand out he dumped a dollar's worth of change on the stage, loud & clear.
It was pretty much classic Bob.
He played the song OK, but all I remember is that change clattering on the floor.
Long Live Bob Weir!!!
(And that video is simply killer... yay Peggy Lee!)
"All due respect to Little Willie John, but that live version Thom posted blows away the original."
Absolutely. She also added the additional lyrics (without asking for credit for them) and was responsible for the sparse arrangement. Most people don't realize that she was a really good writer (eg all of the material for "Lady and the Tramp") and is arguably one of the best female vocalists of her era.
If you'd like to read a very in-depth analysis of the song's history....
This one was a smoker from start to finish in a tiny 7 foot ceiling bar.

Anyone else spring for that Brian Melvin's Night Food release?
My CD has a glitch which creates a loop during the sax solo on Bahama Mama.
