Fire in Ophir Colorado

First Avalanches now fire

Hope our resident Zoner is safe

Thank you, we dodged a bullet!

I was actually hiking above and around it, and thought it was a controlled burn at the time.  Last year there was a giant project that cleared a bunch of trees out from under the powerline and I thought there might have been a continuation of igniting burn piles.

As I worked my way back down, I saw a sheriff's deputy who told me it was a small wildfire that was mostly under control.  I then saw some neighbors who said it was discovered only 45 minutes prior.   Residents and some members of the local fire department were there with shovels.  I helped a bit where I could, but kind of useless having had back surgery in December.  It was about an acre in size with 2-3 small bonfire hot spots.  A firetruck was soon able to get into the area to keep these hot spots from spreading, since the wind was relatively strong.  A helicopter from a Colorado central fire watch agency was flown in within the hour ... personnel apparently spent the night watching to make sure no embers were blown to ignite again.

The location was almost dead center in the Ophir valley ... with massive forests on nearly all sides.  It was mind blowing to see how close we came to seeing everything go up in flames.

Glad that worked out. Here's to dodging bullets.
