Great shot of the FW!

Agreed.

The article doesn't really make it clear if it's going to be a permanent fixture as a venue, and at least one writer is speculating it might be a one-off for the promoter Non Plus Ultra.

I think I was there

a few times

The job of the being a good not even great reporter is such a lost art. This was an iconic temple of musical live performances in the history of Rock and Roll, and you lead the story as if the soul of a sole honda store lives on as a new place to listen to music.

Yup, also agreed. Not even surprising how poorly this thing was put together.

Don't write off good reporting quite yet, though.
Check out Amanda Petrusich, who's come up tooth and nail through nonsense blogs and sites like P4K to get her pieces published in the Times and the New Yorker. Great writer.

Sweet

you couldn't get any of the acts to play on the same bill today that were on the marquee together back then. if they did it would be at least a $500 ticket & most wouldnt be of the same quality as before

Isn't that the place Bill Graham caught Carlos Santana trying to sneak in, beginning their long relationship?

Carlos would be a solid choice for the rechristening.

I hope Courtney Barnett plays there in October.

Fond memories

Apologies for the old fart grandpa speak -  my singular most transcendental grateful dead moment was in that  carousel ballroom

Carlos was caught sneaking into the original Fillmore. (on Geary )   ..for a sold out Cream show.

He and his pal snuck up a fire escape and came through a window- which turned out to be Graham's office-- he was sitting at his desk.

I never caught the Dead at FW- some friends did in 1970 - pretty cool stories.

My big shows there were:

Iron Butterfly/Cold Blood

Santana/ Yusef Lateef

Ten Years After/ Buddy Rich

Johnny Winter/ Mountain  (WOW)

Savoy Brown/ Butterfield

Savoy Brown/ Fairport

BB King/ Buddy Guy/ Allman Bros

Albert King/ Freddie King/ Mott

James Gang/ Black Sabbath

ARETHA

...and others.

Big smoking terrace.

Cool lld and Klondike!

"Great shot of the FW!"

Yep, but a better shot of the Carousel.  Not a lot of those around.

Definitely not a great article. It glosses over the history before Graham took over - my mom loved the place in the 40s when it was called the El Patio - and of course the Grateful Dead and a couple of other bands foolishly tried to run it themselves for a short time, but other than a mistake or misleading quote about the capacity of the room the article is fairly clear about what's up.

I hadn't heard that Honda was vacating the building, but apparently they have and now a small promotion company has taken the lease and is going to use it, until Big Money gets their way and the place is torn down.

The last I heard the plan to tear it down was a done deal, but I guess not enough palms have been greased yet.

I go to a lot of shows at the Miner Auditorium, which is right around the corner, and for years I have driven past the place on my way out of town, and I tip my cap every single time I see it or drive by. I never thought I'd get a chance to go inside the actual room, I've tried a couple of times but they wouldn't let me, so I sure hope something happens there that I can go to, just so I can step in that iconic room one time.

Lloyd. I shared the room with you at a few of those

Leslie west rocked !

as did the kings. Freddie was my fave king... ahhh to relive the old days....
