I don't know if I would free him. I think it's more likely that I would try to figure out how to get him both the medical and psych help I think he needs.
And while it's nice that America's consciousness has been raised on the subject, America's attention span is anywhere from five seconds to five minutes tops, so in a month or two the story & the issue will be forgotten and the insurance machine will continue to roll on with no changes.
He's become content, and, as such, he'll be consumed voraciously, and then forgotten for the next big thing that comes along and gives our lives the illusion of meaning for a moment.
He's a privileged nimrod who thinks he is above the law. He will be "lucky" to spend the rest of his life in prison or a mental institution. The Feds will try to fry him.
Hope he has to face the CEO's wife and children in the court room and try to explain why sneaking up and shooting their husband/dad in the back was ethical.
>>>Hope he has to face the CEO's wife and children in the court room and try to explain why sneaking up and shooting their husband/dad in the back was ethical.
He'll have to face them, but his belief(s) in health insurance "ethics" is most likely what drove him to this act that he felt justified in doing.
It's pretty clear he received neither the physical nor mental healthcare he needed. The irony here is that he'll get all of his healthcare for free from now on.
Interesting thoughts. I'm not necessarily into an eye for an eye...I mean, look at Mark David Chapman. He's still alive, costing tax payers, and what he did, imo, is far worse, frankly. And, he is still alive.
So why should Mangione be put to death, while Mark is being fed?
Mental health is a strong issue, in both cases. I also think about the religious right, who kill abortion doctors, and feel that is a shame. Because, these are doctors. They do more for society than just abortions; they help deliver as well. I guess I think it's important if one has a brain to allow it to help society. Mangione, while mentally ill, has intelligence. Not sure who would use that knowledge, given a life behind bars.
A comment someone made was "those doctors already got peoples' eyes. Now it's their turn."
Again, I don't condone violence. It is a huge issue now, our poor health care system. And it'll only get worse.
How can a society sustain itself if a majority of people work jobs they hate just to have healthcare?
This is an equal part of the equation regarding the health of our economy. Human health and economic health are no doubt intertwined and the current system is a disease if not a plague upon this nation.
It's apparent that most aren't celebrating Luigi but are celebrating someone, anyone, fighting back against the for-profit insurance industry that's bleeding people dry and then denying claims. It's also obvious that media and both political parties vilifying Luigi in a blatant attempt to silence people who have been victimized by the insurance industry is resulting in push back.
Murder is wrong, whether it's 68,000 people left to die despite being insured, or killing one person who is responsible for denying life-saving treatment for 68,000 people his company insures. I know which murderer I'd let off with a wrist slap and which one would never leave prison again, though.
A brief look at wiki: Chapman is in the Family Reunion Program, and has been allowed regular conjugal visits since 2014 with his wife since he accepted solitary confinement. The program allows him to spend forty-four hours alone with his wife in a specially built prison home, a trailer on prison grounds equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, and a bedroom.
This is how we treat some murderers. The lesson here is, don't mess with corporations. A musician, well, that's different.
