Friday Pet Chat--New Pet Edition

Forums:

My daughter has wanted a bird for some time. We have budgies,  but they are reluctant to interact with people,  they seem to prefer their own kind. My daughter wanted a bird to bond with,  to take care off, a friend. It might be foolish,  but we got her a Jenday conure.

The dogs are curious, but not hostile.

How are zoner's pets doing?

Any new editions?

Ha! That’s a cool looking bird! Strutting it’s stuff too! Does it bother the bird when the dogs stare at it like that? Does the bird have a name yet?

Here’s a pic of little Gravy the 2nd. Gravy the 1st had to be put down unfortunately. Hopefully this little guy won’t bite the neighbor kid.

That’s what she looked like a few weeks ago. That’s not actually her, Miss Bucky Badger doesn’t want me posting actual pics of our animals on social media because the landlord is a jerk. But now our cat Biscuit has a friend again at least.

Good luck with Gray the second, and good luck with your landlord.

The bird's name is Kiwi. I explained to my daughter that Kiwi is native to Brazil, not New Zealand,  or even Australia, but she doesn't care. Kiwi does not seem intimidated by the dogs.

very cool, I’ve never owned a bird but I like Kiwi’s colors a lot.

Does it fly around outside of its cage?

It looks like it’s got a little ankle monitor on too.

Not yet, Bucky, only 5 months old. It will one day soon. It  climbs like spiderman

That's an identification band.

K9 Mathazar with Homer Jones

Both gone but not forgotten

That bird looks like it’s up to something

So does Mathazar now that I look at him again. Homer Jones looks like the boss cat. Not taking any crap.

bump for the best thread on the board let’s see some more of your pets and chat about them

Dealing with some yardbird drama.

We had to remove our oldest chicken, Stella, from the rest of the birds because the other girls started to be really mean to her and pecking at her until they drew blood.

Stella is the black and white hen to the left:

Stella and Cleo.jpg

She is the last of the old flock which we integrated with the new flock about three years ago.   The younger ones would sometimes bully her, but nothing too serious until a few weeks ago when we found a gaping wound on the back of her neck.

We put her in the backyard, treated her wound, and she healed up fine.  A few days ago, however, we tried to reintroduce her back into the front yard coop, but within minutes one of the younger hens tackled her, pinned her down, and started pecking her viciously.  We are in the process of building her own little coop which we will keep in a separate patio area so she can live out her final years in peace.  She actually laid a couple eggs recently which is pretty amazing for a 10-year-old chicken.

Daphne is loving the return of sunshine to Portland. I discovered that when she's indoors all day while we are at work, she moves from sunspot to sunspot all over the house... and then does kitty pilates when she finally goes outdoors...

Poor Stella is blue.

Q says HI to all the pets this Friday, while he scans the fields for wild turkeys.  He's a gooood boy!

^i seeing turkeys once or twice a week these days.

Stella is a good looking bird, Ken, hope she is ok

>>>>I discovered that when she's indoors all day while we are at work, she moves from sunspot to sunspot all over the house...

yup! Most cats I’ve known are drawn to the “death ray”

^^^ LOL, death ray, love that!

>>>>>Gravy the 1st had to be put down unfortunately. Hopefully this little guy won’t bite the neighbor kid.

I hope Gravy the 1st was a dog. Cats can bite anyone they don't like.

Ken, that is so interesting about Stella. Your description kind of reminds me of certain aspects of menopause, ha!

Eek, and then I found this from a backyard chicken discussion board:

Bigger chickens pick on smaller chickens, that is just the way it goes in chicken society. Why this didn't start upon introduction - I have no idea. Perhaps they have been recently cooped up due to bad weather and boredom set in. Pecking/cannibalism is a difficult habit to break once it has been initiated. Do not reintroduce the younger birds until they are mature.

Yikes! Now I know the origin of "pecking order"...

>>>> hope Gravy the 1st was a dog. Cats can bite anyone they don't like.

I should have separated those. Gravy the first got put down because of kidney issues. Gravy also bit the neighbor kid though, which they cried about.

Kiwi was out for a couple hours this morning, he/she is a climbing fool. My daughter is working to gain his trust, he was climbing on her and hanging out on her bed. He is especially curious about the budgies,  the budgies are frightened of him however. He seems to enjoy his time exploring outside of his cage and it will be interesting when his wings grow back.

Ken, did you eat the two eggs that Stella laid?

>>>>it will be interesting when his wings grow back.

so it’s wings get clipped? Is that normal to do for a pet bird?  Can you or do you do it more than once?

The wings are clipped so it can flutter safely to the ground and not crash.  I would rather not clip them, but i am concerned about kiwi flying into a window or a mirror.  If you're going to clip them, it should be done every few months.

that’s interesting stuff OC. I never thought about the flying into windows part but I’ve seen it happen to outdoor birds so it makes sense! (unfortunately).

Cheers to kiwi and the rest of the viva pets

i love animals. no ulterior motives or bullshit to deal with. all the best to all the pets.

Dogs and Kiwi are adjusting well. Hopefully the dogs and the bird can roam around without conflict. Might try it this weekend.
