"Friends" of Red Rocks

Forums:

Anyone heard anything new about the status of the plan to pull out the trees in the planters that run alongside the stairs & replace them with advertising / VIP seating, etc?

http://www.friendsofredrocks.org/

I heard that they were adding more concessions along the side because people have gotten too out of shape  to climb the stairs.

^ Thanks for posting ... that's news to me and interesting ... since I've rarely ever had to wait very long at any line in the venue for concessions ... although rarely eat their "food" if I can help it.  The soft serve ice cream near the exhibit area underneath the top of the stands is actually very good and a great deal.

However, I can't seem to find ANY info out there re: the proposal to overhaul the tree planters I had read about a year ago or so.

 >>>>>"Friends"

So they're not really friends?

Is friendship not a two way street?

If so, how can one be friends with an "inanimate object(s)"?

There have been drink carts on the sides for years, let alone the tub 'o beer guys.

Jesus Christ it's 2017 don't they have ramps and wheels in CO? I'm sending that pic into IATSE 7.

block & tackle

Egyptian engineering.

That's what happens when "friends" show up with no real plan.....

Why not move port-o-johnnies onto the sides while they're at it.

Sweet Honeybucket on the Rocks

We should just tarp off the planters so our bros (who haven't made it in yet) have some space for the show.

Escalators?

Are they still having tarp races or has that reform movement held fast?

About time they create some VIP Elite Snub Lounges.

I spent a few songs mediating under one of those trees during the first set on 8/30/78.  Mushrooms came on a bit strong and I had to regroup. Beautiful lady tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was meditating for the whole show.  "No, just trying to get my shot together" was all I could manage to reply.  She patted me on the head and went on her way.

Would hate to see them go.

It has held. Show space defense has become something of a necessity at Red Rocks tho.

The same kids still show up late, but instead of squeezing in on their friends' tarps, the just flood into the GA seating and hang around/muscle their way into other people's space.

Under "Friends" -- "Current Concerns" :

Planter Box Renovation- FoRR is working to stay up to date on any plans to change the planter boxes. As a group, we oppose tearing out the trees and paving the planter boxes. Our official position: We are opposed to any changes with the planter boxes. We feel the trees have historic value, and do not want to see railings, trees removed, or any part of the planter boxes paved.

Yeah, read that bit about being opposed on their website, but can't find any other information about it on the internet.   I find this strange since I vividly recall there being a couple of website articles with artist renderings of the new concept.

2017-04-01 09.27.02.jpgSo apparently those weren't food carts, they were mini bars for the new VIP box seats that have been carved into Shiprock. VIP seats will be accessed by a gondola from the Trading Post.

Spent like half an hour reading up on Petra. Thanks, Stringtwang.

I hope jonny doesn' t have a huge problem with this.  wink

The wife and I are flying out for Railroad Earth, Leftover Salmon and Keller and The Keels in July. It will be my first show at Red Rocks since seeing the Grateful Dead on August 13, 1987. Prior to that I saw 100+ shows from '76-'87 including every performance by the GD.

The Denver area was a great place to grow up.

I'm assuming it (Red Rocks) has changed beyond recognition from the days when I was a regular.

Even so, I'm pumped to be going.

Once you're on the benches it's absolutely the same.

I don't know Rick, those rocks have been there a pretty long time and I imagine they have not changed since last you have seen them.

160 million years, give or take a few.

Since the formation was uplifted to its present position. The rocks themselves are almost 300 million years old.

How long before private interests and commercialization "build" a few more new rooms?

I was referencing the "total money grab" that folks have told me about.

The days of bringing in pony kegs and milk jugs of booze are over I assume?

Yeah, I don't think any venue in the country allows BYOPK, Rick.

They updated the structure up top about 13 years ago, adding more bathrooms, concession, and a visitor center. They also added the stage cover about 30 or 40 years ago.

Other than that, it's the same venue it has always been.

that looks like Stu at the front of the unit being hoisted. You need to push with the rest of them Stu.

You can still wear your cut-off jeans if that makes you feel better, Rick.

Mark, should we go ahead and compose Rick's scathing review of McRed Rocks?

The video screens were a back-handed face slap after being victimized by multiple craft beer vendors...

Stu could carry that thing up to the top all by himself.

Parking is still FREE, by the way.

I remember when this venue only served farm to table hotdogs.

I remember when Chief Hosa campground was the official after party.

You'll get no scathing review. Change is inevitable and to be expected.

I've been back to the place a couple of times over the years but not for a show.

The more I've thought about it after reading comments the more it dawned on me that it can't change that much.

In the grand scheme of things, yes, there is an underlying truth to this; however, the renditions I had seen re: plans for ripping out the trees to put in railings / ads were relatively significant in so far as what can be changed.  Was hoping someone knew of the location of said renditions & status of plans.

The Visitor Center is tucked behind the back, and respectfully done. Totally non-obtrusive. Have fun, Rick.
