Saw 'em in '88 at the Salt Palace, they were my favorite band for a minute, they were great live.

They contributed Wharf Rat to the Deadicated Tribute CD and with Rat Dog...

I'm actually considering the Oakland show, although the wiltern would b a better venue.

they do appear to have been pretty kick ass live back in the day.

After serving as the front man for Midnight Oil, Peter Garret went on to serve in Parliament (the political body, not the band) where he continued to advance an agenda of environmental protection and aboriginal rights.  He ultimately served as the Australian Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, although some on the left criticized what they perceived as a softening of some of his positions when compared to when he was a rock singer.

Cool !! i Like M.O. !

The Wiltern Show Will Go Bonkers !

Saw them in 93 at the Mann Music Center in Philly.  Ziggy Marley opened.  Good time!

Looks like the Fox is sold out in Oakland tomorrow but I'm considering heading down and trying to score a GA for under face outside.

Anybody else going?

Due to some health issues on my side, I missed the Oils shows on the East coast. Luckily, to combat scalpers, they added a few more shows in late Aug/Sept in the US. Good luck on scoring a GA under face but I would be be prepared for that not to happen. Everyone who has seen this tour is raving about it.

p.s. Did you buy a Guild bass today? :-)

my uncle worked for the state department way back in the day, told me a story about how the republicans at that time had their eye on the band(midnight oil) and was working to deny them entry for anti-american statements they had made ...there was a lot of talk going back and forth , but eventually nothing came of it .....

I don't know, Tony.

I haven't personally landed one on craigslist yet but there's all kinds of mentions of under face tix there and stub hub, which I'm typically not a fan of but should probably look into in greater depth, as well.

The oakland fox is pretty huge for an indoor venue, this ain't the warfield or the Wiltern, so don't sell my frugal persistence short.

Also, I have a small amount of jedi mind powers.

you're talking to the guy who got into sold out Wilco on a Saturday night at the Fillmore last year for underface and that was a ticket bought directly from the venue an hour before the band went on.

The man who just last weekend became known as the Eugenius of love with nothing more than a couple leads, 24hrs, some friendly acquaintances, and a whim.

but No starfire purchased today,

I'm more in the market for a Starfire II and I assumed Cat's was gonna b out of my price range but now maybe I'm the one selling myself short?

Anyhow, I hope your health issues r all resolved and I'm glad you're getting a chance to see Midnight oil.

I've never been a big fan but the same English professor who turned me onto the Pogues swore by them and once I saw some of their live stuff as encouraged by the tweets of the Great Mike Keneally, I'm now convinced I should probably drive down to Oakland tomorrow even on the odds I'll have to pay face or, steve parish the thought, not get in at all.

Wouldn't u agree, my friend?

I was going to be an internet asshole for no reason in this thread but decided not to. Small steps, but steps nonetheless.

It's a midnight oil thread, brah.

I would think some trolling would b acceptable

Wouldn't u agree, my friend?

I would agree that it is worth the effort to get in the door. I see they added a CA date in the effort to bring down ticket prices, so that will work in your favor. IMO, one of the best, most intense bands to ever grace the stage.

As for the Starfire, I think she took an offer of 2500. Considering the pedigree of that bass (some of my favorite songs of all time has that bass on them), I thought that a bit low. I'm not an instrument buyer/seller and really don't know what the market is. I posted it only give Cat a bit more exposure.

Caught Midnight Oil at CW Post College in (I believe) 1989. Pretty good band.

$2,500 is more than a fair price for that thing, Tony, considering where it's coming from.

If I was a wealthy man, which I am the opposite of, I would have paid that for it in a heart beat.

But Crazy enough, I actually finally did buy a new Korean Starfire II reissue this morning off of ebay after being in the market for one for well over a year for $965.

It being mint and under $1,000 with no additional shipping cost broke me down and I just couldn't resist.

So I guess I was wrong when I told u I didn't buy a guild this weekend.

Maybe you're the real jedi here?

This weekend is off to an interesting start.

so how's this stub hub thing work?......

^

LOL on the Jedi thing. As for you buying Cat's Cold Roses Guild, it was hopeful thinking.  After TH tweeted you about it, I just thought it cool if you bought it.

As for the Stub Hub thing for the Fox. There seems to be a fire sale going on right now, as is often the case with Stub Hub, that has fistful of GA available for $11.00. I would grab one that way that can be instantly downloaded and go to the show hassle free.

Well, that was fun.

i was satisfied with getting in at face and no fees but it sounds like I still overpaid according to Tony's last min. Stub hub ticket drop info.

i also ran into Peter T whole said he unfortunately ate a few tickets.

i encouraged him to check out viva so these misfortunes would b less likely to occur in the future.

Great to see him and his wonderful wife though.

hopefully I'll bump into them again at the fox for King Crimson in a few weeks.

apparently he's been seeing the oils since their inception in down under.

he regaled me with a few recollections of that and the early days of inxs.

those old oily Aussie dudes can still 80's Rock with the best of them too.

I wasn't very familiar with them at all but found their repertoire to b poignant, punchy, well crafted and executed material.

very relatable stuff regardless of age, background, small pub stage or sold out stadium setting.

i'd rather see them than most bands from that era including the b52's, Duran Duran, depeche mode, crowded house, and the cure, all of which have solid live performance reputations.

Crowd was ok, kinda white and nerdy and a little bit older.

All my exes live in Texas, the opening band of acoustic, folky, vocal harmonizing, cute Sheilas mentioned the oils change their set list a little every night cause they're badass like that.

highlights included an early 'too much sunshine', mid set 'beds r burning' and show closing 'forgotten years'.

Garrett hates trump so much he mentions it after nearly every song, it's pretty funny.

good on ya, lads!

Glad you enjoyed the show, T. My last Oils show was at a ski town bar that wasn't half filled because the show was stuck on the end of the tour at the last second. I don't think anyone was more than 50 ft from the stage that night.

That must have been a little intense.

oh, and I neglected to mention they covered 'warf rat' of all things.

Garrett said they had recorded it for a rainforest benefit album cause Elvis Costello had snaked 'ship of fools' out from underneath them.
