Sending in our helicopters to rescue those outside the airport boundaries is commendable. He's doing the best he can in an impossible situation. Worse thing I can see is maybe the airlift should have started a month earlier, but at that point we weren't ready logistically, and thats the military's failt, the boys in the Pentagon. Lots of finger pointing and Monday morning quarterback about not slowing down the taliban advance, that's really his only fuck up,,,  but that would have involved more US deaths. A no win situation is a no win situation. Thank republikans for this mess, not Joe for doing his best to get us and our helpers out of it. 

I believe that by July 9, 90% of Americans were out of Afghanistan. We had a shit ton of civilians there.

Trump says that when he was president, in a phone conversation with the leader of the Taliban, he warned that after U.S. troops leave if “you decide to do something terrible to our country … we are going to come back and we are going to hit you harder than any country has ever been hit.” Trump says he believes the two “had a real understanding” but that after Trump left office “now they’re going wild over there.”

The Pentagon just ordered commercial airlines to help aid with evacuations,,,, better late than never,,,, with the obvious urgency, they should have been involved from the beginning of evacuations, voluntarily.

We could never "win" over there. It wasn't possible for the Brits, the Russians or for us. We could never be more than a band-aid.

So again, how many lives would you be willing to lose, and how long would you keep troops there, knowing that the same thing would happen as soon as we leave?

Learn some history. The Allies knew about the death camps as early as 1941. They made a conscious choice to do nothing, which facilitated the deaths of over 6,000,000 Jews. Even after the war is was extremely hard for the Jewish refugees to to emigrate to the US and Great Britain. Yours was a ridiculous question based on historical falsehoods.

Six million died between 1941 and 1945. FDR and Churchill knew about the camps from the beginning, and they knew that they could save lives by mounting a ground invasion sooner. FDR specifically worked to push that date back. The Allied invasion was not specifically to save Jews, it was to start the end of the war, which it did.

The Soviets, pushing in from the East, liberated camps earlier than did the US or England.

So no, we did not save the Jews. We knowingly and willingly watched MILLIONS get murdered. Six million died, and you actually have the nads to say that we saved them.

Yes, Do Little,  the US did allow some Jews and other refugees to enter after the war, but BK's  point still stands. They kept a lot of Jews from entering.

I would fight for Native Americans to have there own place to practice their religion where it started. To me the United States is the historical land of Native Americans they own it. They were there long before Columbus came peddling his stuff.

The whole "saved from the Nazis" is absurd. FDR made a choice to not invade earlier, knowing what was going on. You could make a case that he allowed more deaths. You can't make any point that the US saved Jews from the Nazis. Once the Nazi regime fell we allowed some refugees in. They were absorbed my many countries, France, Australia, Canada, the US, the newly formed Israel. You can't make any case that we saved them from a regime that was no longer there.

On top of it, we didn't open our doors to the refugees, especially after 1948. Each person/family needed to have an American sponsor, which added an extra layer of hardship. Once here, it was up to Jewish aid groups to support the refugees, not the government.

Alfred Hitchcock made one documentary in his life. The Allied High Command commissioned him to make one about the liberation of the camps, to be shown at the Nuremberg Trials. Once complete it was never used. The Allied Command thought that it would drum up too much support in the US and UK for the survivors, and that the public would actually want all those Jewish refugees.

Look at Doolittle, playing the "great white, Christian savior." Sorry, bud, facts are facts.

Doolittle, do you even believe what you've been saying? The millions of people (not only Jews, but also Roma, gays, people with other religions, and others) who were killed in Germany weren't rescued and weren't brought here. They died. The U.S. did not save them, no one did.

More to the point, the situation in Afghanistan seems personal and close to your heart. It's sad, it's shitty. Of course you want people saved, treated well, a stop to the horrors of life for women and young people there. There's no one here who doesn't. Mistakes are being made. But the arguments you're making are difficult to sustain; they don't work. I'm sorry for however you came to the conclusions you have.

The US invasion after 9-11 was the biggest fuck up here. The repubs in charge at the time found their excuse $$$$$$$$ to use all the weapons of war we've been sitting on. Lives lost were of little concern to them. Clandestine op with our Seals could have taken out Bin Laden,,, the invasion was totally unnecessary. And invading was playing right into the mujahedeens hands. I remember quite well the Russian debacle in Afghanistan,, I remember feeling so happy that they were getting their asses kicked by these low budget cave dwellers. I didn't know it at the time it was us selling the mujahedeen those stinger missiles that took down all them rushki helicopters. Gave em a good deal too I bet, just to kill our enemy the russians.  Now I just feel like an asshole,,, living in a country that's too ignorant to learn from history. To live in a country that worships profits over lives,,,, (die every Halliburton investor).  And now you got the roooskies selling the arms to our enemies that are killing us over there.
