General Sherman Tree

Forums:

I'll be in Porterville, CA the week after next and hoping to check out the General Sherman Tree.  Looking for some basic info about visiting the tree.  Most pressingly, should I pack dedicated snow boots for my trek to the tree or will my Merrell hiking boots suffice?  I'll be taking a vaca day out there and hoping to check out Death Valley as well ^___^

I went in the summer and I am not sure about the snow shoes.

When you do get there the smell of the trees are fantastic.

Death valley is a no brainer for me. I loved it and it was in July. One of the hottest places in North America.

I went to the ER one time in Poreterville.  Or maybe it was Visalia?  I don’t know, bad times.  If the weather is nice, there’s tons of swimming holes in SNP starting at the first camp site out of three rivers, potwisha.

Just kidding, looks to still be deep with the white stuff.

You don’t need boots.  It’s a short quarter mile walk on a paved path from the parking lot.  Might be a little ice on some of the stairs in the morning.  It’s a cool park.

^ Thanks~

It's likely I'll be working in the hospital you visited.

Next time in in Cali I will be going to Gen Sherman

Pumped for next week.  My work commitments are pretty easy and I'm gonna have a ~36 hour period to myself, no work obligations.  No vacation days have to be used ^____^

Fresno -> Porterville -> General Sherman Tree -> Modesto -> Yosemite -> Sacramento

If Moro Rock is accessible, it's a short drive from the Sherman Tree... pretty awesome views of the Great Western Divide.

Seqouia National Park is the most beautiful place I've been to so far in my life.  The ascent up the General's Highway toward the huge dome rock formation which the Giant Forest is up behind took on a sort of mystical sense for me.

Lotta snow still.  More pics and trip report if ya have time?

It sure is a very peaceful there.

Very peaceful.  I'll post some more later tonight, Racket.  I have a bunch of pictures.

General Sherman tree, not the largest tree.. as the locations of those are kept super-secret.  But its plenty huge and packs the wow factor.

I always try to imagine the prehistoric world when they were all in their big tree glory.   Yes, post more pics please, the one above made me take a deep breath.

Looking forward to pics of trees, including the not largest. I want to be there.

I think it is by volume... you're correct though in that the tallest redwood's location is kept secret.

I landed in Fresno on Monday evening and drove to Porterville as I had to give a couple demonstrations in town on Tuesday  The demos went a bit late and I only left site at 3:30 so I was fighting daylight to make it out to the tree.  I'm so glad I decided to go through with it and not bail!  After checking out the tree I had to drive ~3 hours to Modesto and check into a hotel for the night.  Had all day Wednesday to myself, checked out a weed store and have my backpacker guitar.  Today's demo in Sacramento went well and now I'm just chilling- took a dip in the whirlpool and smoking my vape pen now.

Look how small the woman appears next to the tree for scale.

The redness of their trunks is so vibrant- I love the contrast of white/redishbrown/green.

Been a good trip.  I'm really enjoying my work right now and excited to move into my house in April.  This new gig is much easier for me and I love the people I get to work with.

I'll be in Nashville next week.  Here's a shot from Pinnacle Peak in Arizona a few weeks back:

Sweet shots.  Thanks.  Must be rad to go all these places and get paid.
