Get Your Fuckin' Shine Box

Forums:

Hey gents. Curious about your shoe shining protocol.

I've recently ventured into shining my own shoes, and I've done a ton of research on getting the best products to clean, condition, and polish my shoes. Still honing my technique.

I have two workhorse pair of dress shoes which I alternate wearing around five times a week; Allen Edmonds 5th Avenue in brown, and Allen Edmonds Strand in black.

For cleaning, I'm using Fiebing's saddle soap, applied with a dauber. Stuff works great at pulling off dirt and grime and old polish. I buff off the residue with an old cotton t shirt.

For conditioning, I'm using Saphir Rennovator, which is kind of spendy, but this stuff is pretty amazing. It's a deep, rich conditioner that really restores the leather. I'm applying that with an sock.

For polishing, I'm using Meltonian shoe cream. I'm applying with a strip of cotton t shirt instead of a dauber. I'm not using a wax polish right now, but I'm considering adding one to my regimen to get that "mirror shine" effect. I've heard good things about Saphir's product. Any suggestions on brands, color matching, etc. are welcome.

I invested in a large, $12 horsehair brush, which I highly recommend. It's much easier than the little shitty ones from Kiwi, and it takes less work to get the desired effect. Finally, I'm buffing with an old Kiwi polish rag, which works great.

Any suggestions, tips, or tricks you guys are using to keep your shoes looking clean?

I just grabbed a very nice pair of boots so I'll be payin close attention to this thread.

my old man used to make me shine his shoes

I was NOT too crazy about that

Go over to Amazon and spend $22 on the Saphir Rennovator, Mr. Timpane. Can't recommend that stuff enough. We'll worth the investment.

Just remember a little goes a long way.

^Will do. Thank you.

Life's too short for shining shoes.

I feel deprived.

I ain't got no shoes to shine

I did it a lot when I was young because other folks thought it was important

it's not

"He’s a man way out there in the blue, riding on a smile and a shoeshine . . . A salesman is got to dream, boy."

Do you paint your toe nails?

>>>Life's too short for shining shoes

I'm not at all surprised you find this basic tenet of being a well styled man elusive, Surfdead.

Maybe you can buff up the Birks with some Lysol or something?

Mark, are you jealous of my high post count thread? You know, the one where you haven't posted a damn thing?

Now you're using Kirley-supported phrases as thread titles to garner interest in your metrosexual grooming threads?

Tsk.

I haven't seen your thread, Gravystain. Post a link and I'll take a look.

Also, giving Kirley credit for a Scorsese masterpiece is just kinda sad. Up your game, 'stain.

awesome thread. bet it goes to 11

Dude loved throwing it around. I know he didn't write it. Felina did.

I'm not here to post links for you, baller. Just look for the highest thread count, ex-donoations reqs.

Cool, Gravystain. New Zone is pretty sweet, huh bro?

Anyway, Cryp told me to wish you guys a happy holiday and to fuck off. I told him I'd pass that along.

>>>>>Maybe you can buff up the Birks

Sorry; never owned any.

Olive Oil does the trick in a pinch...

Do you amble about in just your bare feet, Surf; like a savage?

Whenever possible.

How do you manage weddings and funerals?

I go to as few of either as possible. The few weddings I've been to have been hippie weddings - no dress code.

At a funeral, obviously I wouldn't want it to be about me, so I try to fit in.

But that doesn't extend to shining my shoes!

Dude. Not taking care of your things isn't a form of rebellion.

It's neglect.

I take care of my important tools - dress shoes ain't one of them

Haven't seen them for a few years, but I think they still got most of their original shine, if that makes you feel any better..

Your shoes are an extension of your character, for better or worse.

If you neglect your shoes, you're probably neglecting other important shit, like hygiene.

Mr. Thelion, you seem really up tight. Chill out, man. Take some acid or something.

If I was retired and lived in a warm climate, I'd be barefoot as much as possible.

010.jpg

Do the socks come with them?

>>>Mr. Thelion, you seem really up tight. Chill out, man. Take some acid or something.

Ah, the Boomer credo. It's clearly served the world well.

Take a shower, shine your shoes, and get a job, hippie.

Not a chance, plebe! laugh

>>>>>> Your shoes are an extension of your character, for better or worse.

Well put.

Comfort, while keeping my job, is of the highest priority.

Fortunately, I get to wear comfortable shoes at work.  Right now, I'm wearing some old Rockport leather walking shoes, though I usually like breathable cross-trainers (If they aren't too brightly colored)

At home, it's barefoot or flip-flops; hiking it's tennies or light boots, shows bring slip-on Vans (at this time).

That's all I need...

I know, that's probably TMI for those of you with shoe sensibilities.  cool

One of my twins is super put together. Always  matches from head to toe. She wanted to buy herself a pair of boots for fall but only had $30 of bday money.  I offered to kick in but she refused, so off to Payless Shoes we went.  After the first week of wearing them to school she was upset that they were all scuffed up.  I brought her home a shitty shoe kit(shine, rag, brush) and she's been shining them every couple of days for the past 2 months.  I'm by far a materialistic type of person, though I polish my work shoes every week or so(habit I got from the old man), but I'm proud to see how accomplished she feels by keeping her boots clean and new looking.   Her twin sister is the complete opposite --- she wears vans and whatever clothes she can find. Their older sister is stuck in the middle of caring and not.

My sister gave me these and a pair of Chewbaccas for my birthday.

image_107.jpg

I have one pair of decent Italian leather dress shoes I wear about once a week that could certainly use a shine.

mark's regiment seems a little too pricey and involved for me.

could I get away with just using the saphir or would I need some polish as well or vice versa?

Slacker, do you hike those up with shorts on, so people can see them?

Or is it more of a "just for you" thing, like wearing a thong to work under your pants?

Most importantly, is the Disney logo prominently visible on the other side?

I really don't know shit about shining shoes so I don't have much to offer up to you, Mark, regarding your OP.

Side question:

Where did getting your shoes shined at the airport start?  I dunno- it just seems like such a dated, elitist type thing.  I see it all the time  in every airport I'm in.

people used to dress up, instead of down, before flying

It's also a place that you get to early and have time to kill.

Come to think of it, an airport could be a good place to have a haircut, if they set that sort of thing up...

"Trying to stay alive, and keep my sideburns too."

Gaming the system and getting over on the man so you can take what they are giving.

William Burroughs was a snappy dresser.

Bucket list: if I ever get to 150 lbs. I am getting a suit and shoes made.

Knowing how to dress, like negotiating the place setting at a formal dinner is good to have in your pocket even if you never use it

Being invisible in clear sight.  Good jedi skill.

If I needed to shine my shoes I'd pay someone else to do it.

I'm a man of the people.

Ahhh- that makes sense.  I tend to dress down on my way to the location and stay dressed up on my return flight. YMMV

>>Come to think of it, an airport could be a good place to have a haircut, if they set that sort of thing up...

Have seen that a couple times... not as much as I'd expect... it's a good idea :)

I see a lot of massages and stuff.. I think they're a little overated as I can get them from my friends for $1/minute.

>>>could  I get away with just using the saphir or would I need some polish as well or vice versa?

You could get away with just a cream polish, E. Definitely go for the Meltonian in whatever color matches your shoes.

Here's the total cost breakdown of my system:

Saddle Soap- $10

Saphir Rennovator $22

Meltonian cream polish $6 (per color)

Horsehair brush $12

Kiwi Dauper Brush  $6

Total: $56

Figure to get about 40 shines out of the system, plus basically lifelong use of the horsehair brush. Comes out to about a $1.50 per shine.

custie

Bow down, Fish.

I'm your Jughead now.

so, you're short too?

I am more interested in people shining their lovelight than I am in people shining their shoes.

6' 3" is short in the NBA, yes.

Six, please stop. Thank you.

lol

Good Golly Miss Molly! Have I upset you?

shine on

keep on shining

Would that Smark could also Blow me and create a decent Latté in the morning.

Perhaps then, I would chuckle at her/his faux - witty posts.

I will refrain from waiting, meantime.

The only thing you've upset is the perilous balance of cheese already threatening to overtake this site, Six.

Pull up your nuts and shine your shoes like a man.

Gee whillikers, Mark. I just found out that you're a woman.

I have no rime to worry about current cheese levels at a time like this.

Yeah Disco Stu is drunk posting on dial up again.

Good times.

No idea of Smark's gender or future plans for gender-fluidity.

I am merely offended by the overt Racism displayed in using that 'Shine-Box' term, as it is a classic Racist epithet.

I will get over it, but just noting the offensive - ness.

((( faux - witty Smark )))

It's pretty common knowledge that Mark is a racist. Nothing new here.

Are things slowing down a bit over on that scorcher of a thread you were promoting in here earlier, Gravystain?

No; we're steadily heading towards 200 over there. May be a Viva record? I'm sort of a laissez-faire host.

And, in the Viva Spirit, just lending you a kynd hand here with your shinebox of a thread.

So it's fine for some individual to joke about Afro-Americans, thinly veiling their Racism with blather over shoe preservation products.

Now, what if I started to defame Swedes or Norwegians ??

People would get (deservedly) upset.

I wish Stu wouldn't post in my thread.

Or ever, actually.

vikings can take care of themselves

Smark,

I wish you and your Aryan Brotherhood/Sisterhood buddies a very Jolly PISS OFF ...

May we all have a 2017, and beyond, free of racism and fascism.

Greetings of the season to you Stu.

It is me, the zoner formerly known as cheeseboy.

Go start a log thread and devote the evening to your caps lock key, Stu.

This thread is for gentlemen not suffering from fungal infections.

>>>I am merely offended by the overt Racism displayed in using that 'Shine-Box' term, as it is a classic Racist epithet.

I read it as more of a shoutout to Frank Vincent's character in Good Fellas.

well shit.

does it count if I'm slathered in clotrimazole?

I believe that's a solid check in the "Yes" box, Fish.

It's so easy and laughable for the Overpriveleged Honkies, ensconced in their White Castles, high upon the Colorado hills, to make sly Racist jokes.

Where I come from, people of all colors and stripes Co-Exist.

It is not just a bumper sticker. We all inhabit the Eastern Seaboard and get along with each other.

Smark really owes the VLZ an apology for his/her blatant Racist and Fascist rhetoric.

that's good, cuz I just can't stop rubbing myself with this stuff

fuck! I just turned into tulsa

but with less words

>>>Where I come from, people of all colors and stripes Co-Exist

Actually New Jersey is a long-recognized toxic shithole full of crippling poverty and racial inequality, Stu.

got a pair of red wing boots last year, super comfortable. i've never shined them.

You can take Red Wings into a Red Wing store for free conditioning. Long standing service from them.

cool.

I am not going to go weep at the Admin team over this bit of slander.  I'm just gonna let it go. But I think that it is important for all of us to be sensitive for the thoughts and feelings of our Fellow Persons with the ever-present Burden of mixed DNA from many generations of Races & Genders.

This time, I'm letting it slide, because the Rare Bourbon tips are always Good.

stu shoulda been prebanned

Yeah that was an unfortunate oversight, Fish.

2 pairs of florsheim kenmoors for work.

When I transferred to the city I needed more shoe leather.

Shoeshine guy downstairs does a nice job

Its a brazilian style shine

damn, used to just use a can of polish, t-shirts, brush & lighter to get a mirror surface on our military dress shoes. and a toothbrush when necessary.

>>> I am more interested in people shining their lovelight than I am in people shining their shoes. <<<

That's a beautiful thing, 6.

The barrage of libelous posts in no way negates your Racist & Fascist ideology.

Any pretense of "Prebanned" thought - war is a weak defense for the mental disease of demeaning and ostracizing various groups of people based upon their racial makeup.

My Hard-working ancestors and myself pray for your eventual evolution away from snot-nosed, self-entitled enmity toward those not born into privilege and wealth. We're getting together for a Prayer Group later this evening.

May the Endless Highway of Life bring your lessons in a timely manner.

Anyway, it looks like the Saphir wax polish is available through a site called The Hanger Project.

Thinking about taking the plunge.

We have a very nice lady, Marianne who comes into the office once a week on Thursdays to shine shoes. $5 plus tip. So each Thursday I wear the shoes that need a shine the most. I have two pairs of Allen Edmonds and a couple pairs of penny loafers......

I Only wear Dress shoes for weddings and funerals = which is not that often.

Nice, Fafa. I remember you being an Allen Edmonds man.

I used to pay my guy $6 plus tip. Doing the math on my system, my savings are pretty substantial. The bigger key for me right now is I'm actually enjoying doing it as I learn. That might change.

nobody cares about your race, stu...

your posts just suck

A little too bourgeousie if you ask me.

Not my style at all.

Shining your own shoes isn't even vaguely bourgeoisie

No, but owning a pair of shoes that need to be shined certainly is.

They would look pretty fucking stupid at the refinery.

Any leather boot or shoe needs care, including a man's work boots.

Taking care of your shoes is a long-standing working class principle that we can thank middle class Baby Boomers for rejecting as they schlubed America to death in the 60's and beyond.

My mother always said that the first thing she would look at when meeting a man was his shoes.

that being said, I use that liquid dauber thingy that looks like a bingo card marker.

I ve just past the point of caring.

This thread has really gone in a variety of directions, and it seems that it was started with a pretty basic and straightforward premise.

I feel this 2.0 boat picking up speed.

I think we're moving in the right direction, Lance.

It's nice to be able to make a point about bringing in numbers in a seemingly innocuous thread without riding gossipy dick; like Gravy often does, for example.

There is even a spell check on the new zone but I refuse it

Post fast and show no mercy, Fables.

That's how it's done.

hundo for teh boot buff.

'Sup BJT?

Nice to see you posting again, man.

what does banning look like from out there? can they see everything and just not post, or what?

please pass the fois gras

I genuinely hope they can, Fish.

It conjures a delicious vision of poor folks pressing their sooty little faces against the window of a regal steak house, doesn't it?

Wonderful.

Wolverines DO NOT get shined.

hey there mark!

while im not a shoe shiner, i do wax my furniture, and wax my skis, and polish my european bronze collection...

i do believe fully in the polish, polishing, and, all things buffed.

You're a gentleman, Jon. I appreciate you.

No, Jaz; Wolverines don't get shined. They need to be conditioned and brushed in order to extend the leather's lifespan. Mink oil is the traditional workboot treatment, but most any decent conditioner will do.

Wolverines DO NOT get shined.

I thought you were taking that from a John Belushi skit. No?

I have to give Mark props on this thread. The odds of it going over 100 were slim to none. I'm guessing that most here don't have shoes that need shining, and if they do they use spit and a dirty sock.

Thanks, BK.

Threads are but a vehicle that take us where we want to go.

Mark is prebanned for his 08:12 pm post.

I'm beyond banning, prebanning, or anything of the sort, Gravystain.

I make polished, well conditioned gold. That's what I do here.

im into post banning, using twists of dungeons and dragons dice rolls, for values, length, and severity.......

for example.... tulsa chris gets banned... i roll the 20 sided die for length..... (7)... ok.. 3 weeks

then a dodecahedral for severity,........(12)..... ouch.... this will include public shaming, and light verbal abuse... some beer dumping (maybe). but def short leash.

finally, a 6 sided.. for fun....(3)... ohhhhhh.... we get to berate and undermine the subject for 6 weeks, but no more.

Judit, Wolverines are good and not to expensive leather work boots. I am at this time not familiar with the Belushi skit/line.

I was not aware that "go get your shine box' was a bigoted phrase as it pertains to an inanimate object and is from a pivotal scene in Good Fellows,

Now the term "shine" referring to a person certainly is bigoted.

Getting a shine can be a good thing,  and tip well.
