Giants Pitcher Derek Holland In Hot Sauce

Forums:

The San Francisco Giants' Derek Holland caused a bit of controversy for alleged racist language and behavior used on an interview on the show Intentional Talk a couple of days ago.  As the Japanese trainer was participating in the shenanigans, I don't really get the outrage.

Was this offensive?

I’m not easily offended so no, I wasn’t offended.

Could I understand why a Japanese person might be offended watching a white guy imitate Japanese people and make a bunch of jokes because his “hype guy” is Asian. Yes.

It’s called “empathy”.

Hey Herbal while you are here have you heard the very eloquent remarks by Beto O’Rourke on the NFL player protests? I know this is a subject you’ve commented on before: https://mobile.twitter.com/nowthisnews/status/1032017750829531142

I thought it was funny, especially in the Rob Ross t-shirt.

I get empathy, Bucky, but when one of the willing participants in the skit is Japanese, it doesn't seem like there was sinister intent, just a bit of joking between friends.

Thanks for sharing the O'Rourke clip.  I had heard of his comments but not heard them.  I agree with him.  The right to peacefully protest is as American as Apple Pie, as is the right of business owners to protect their brand through ground rules and sanctions, and the rights of patrons to boycott businesses who's practices they disagree with (for example, the Birmingham bus boycott).

Stephen A. Smith has stated that he feels that the National Anthem protests are ineffective, especially since Trump changed the narrative about them from protesting discrimination and police brutality to one about patriotism.  He feels the players protesting would better serve their cause with a march on Washington to the doorstep of the elected officials that are legislating policy in this country:

No. I’m not watching a Stephen A Smith clip. Thanks though.

>>>>American as Apple Pie, as is the right of business owners to protect their brand through ground rules and sanctions,

really? I didn’t know that. Is it in the constitution? The right of business owners to stop peaceful protests? Protecting your brand through sanctions is as “American as Apple Pie”? I’ve never heard that before

Herbal you’re up around Seattle, right? Are you a Mariners fan? I saw a picture from their home game the other day, it looked like China it was so smoky.

Yes Bucky, it's called free market capitalism.

If people want to boycott the NFL and if advertisers decide to spend their advertising dollars elsewhere, that is their right.  We haven't seen that happen.

I have lived in Seattle since 2005, and the Mariners have yet to make the play-offs since I've been here.  As a longtime Baltimore Orioles fan, that hadn't bothered me.  I do like Safeco Field, and have many die-hard Mariners fans for friends who I respect.

This year, I have decided to root for the Mariners to end their playoff drought, partly because the Orioles suck this year and are in rebuilding mode, but mostly to honor a really good friend of mine from back East, who unexpectedly died last month.  He was a big baseball fan.  Our last conversations had been about the Mariners surprising run, and he'd encouraged me to get on board their bandwagon.  I reminded him I'm an O's fan, but that the M's have been a nice diversion from that trainwreck.  His last text to me was "Enjoy the ride with the Mariners!"  I have taken those words to heart, and am rooting for them (although this will be tough when the O's come to town on the next Mariners homestand).  The A's are playing great and the Astros are the defending champs, so it will be a tough road ahead.  Hopefully, destiny shines it's light on Seattle.

As far as the smoke, it finally blew out of here yesterday.  The air quality was so bad, the newscasters said it was the equivalent of smoking 7 cigarettes a day.  Turned the streets into a ghost town and negatively impacted foot traffic for everyone.  Old-time, life-long Seattle residents told me they've never seen smoke like this here before, now it's happened for two straight years.  Hope it's not the new normal.  Those few rain-free, crystal blue sky sunny August afternoons make the grey, rain-season worth putting up with.

>>>>This year, I have decided to root for the Mariners to end their playoff drought, partly because the Orioles suck this year

Ouch. I just looked it up. You picked a good season to abandon the team you support, They’re already eliminated from the playoffs. And I’ll have to take exception with “the Orioles suck this year” because it looks like they have sucked for many, many years, as they’ve gone under .500 in 22 of the last 35 seasons since they won the WS, in 1983.

Good luck with the M’s, cool to support your fiends team.

Glad the smoke cleared up.

The Orioles were actually very good the last several years, with a 4-year string with the best record in the game, with lots of play-off games, although no World Series games.  They were the David against the Goliath of the Yankees and Red Sox.  That team is gone now, with Machado, Britton, Schoop, O'Day and Gausman all traded.  Adam Jones would be gone, but exercised his 10/5 rights to nix a deal to the Phillies.  They have more dead weight to cut loose (Chris Davis will go down as a historically bad contract they'll have to eat), but there are some interesting new prospects, and hopefully they can model themselves after the Astros, who went from worst to first in two years.

What four years streak are u referring too???

Yeah really. He must be thinking 69-71. They've won over 90 games twice since 2000.

It was 2012-2014.  It was three seasons, sorry for the mistake.

In 2014 they were 96-66, won their division and were tied with the Nats for the second best record in the league. That was a good season!

Until the Royals swept them in the ALCS.

Fairweather fans are the worst.

I think SF Giants fans might take issue with you saying the Baltimore Orioles were the best team from 2012-14.

They did not have best record in all of baseball those three years...lets look it up...;)

And thats still a far cry from 2017, 16, 15, and 14...lol

Ya, im thinking 69-71, as well

This baseball thread is not going well for you, Java Dave.

It's a fine thread, thanks for your input, Mark.  If anyththing, it makes me miss the contributions of Ping Pong.

I agree that fairweather fans suck.  I am an Orioles fan, make no doubt about it.  I am honoring a friend's last words, and killing time til next year by having a secondary rooting interest in the Mariners.

You should be thankful the Orioles have won a World Series. I’d be eternally grateful if the Brewers would win one.

I still root for them every year because they’re my team and I love them unconditionally.

Isn’t the Heathen a big Giants fan?

Not sure how he’s going to take this thread.

I recall hearing some announcer make the claim about their record, Jambone.  Maybe he was just talking about the AL East.  The point would be that until this year, the Orioles have had their best stretch since the  World Series team of the early 80s.  The big mistake was getting rid of Nick Markakis a few years back.  Then Matt Wieters got hurt and they didn't resign him, throw in Brad Brach to the trade list from the last month, and it's a much different team now.  We'll see what they do with Buck Showalter and Dan Duquette, who both have expiring contracts.  My buddy's second last words to me were that they should put Buck out of his misery.

>>>>>>If anyththing, it makes me miss the contributions of Ping Pong.

roose rucy was his deright

Aahhh, you can never trust those announcers...lol....plus, to them , its almost like explaining their owns shows ratings..."we re number one sports show in country!!!!...(between ages of 16-17 males, who live in "this" region, and view at "this" time...lol)

But, you are right, too w wieters...that was beginning of end i thought...guy was a big piece of that team...good catcher, could hit...enough..etc...but, the other big thing ya got going for ya, is Buck has a history now...teams ALWAYS win, AFTER he leaves...lol...most of the time, he helped build em etc...not sure his role in the future of this team...but, somehow, someway, theyll win at least a div title the first full year he is gone....;)

>>>>The big mistake was getting rid of Nick Markakis a few years back.

HAHAHAHA You got me man!!!!

Pretty slick, Herbal. I was buying you being a genuine Orioles fan until you wrote that thing about Markakis!! That is GOLD JERRY, GOLD!!!!!

Mark Reynolds would have been another funny one you could use.

Markakis is playing great for the Braves, and the O's have had mixed results with the likes of Joey Rickard in right field ever since he left.  He's a professional hitter, and could have been the one thing to get them over the hump.

'Ole Pong woulda had a hell of time saying Baltimore Orioles.

I think he'd get along great with Derek Holland.

>>>>Markakis is playing great for the Braves

https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/markani01.shtml

Markakis, at age 34 and four seasons removed from the Orioles is having a good year, his best since 2008 as a matter of fact. In the seasons between 2008-18 he was mediocre. According to his WAR rating, he has rated as a “sub” from 2012-17 so that’s why I find your statement to be funny, because he’s nothing special as far as his baseball talents. I’m pretty sure whatever turn the O’s took, the departure of Nick Markakis had little to do with it.

I disagree.  They missed his bat in the play-offs.  He's also got a good glove.

On another note, the Schoop-Villar trade might end up working for both the O's and the Brewers.

I have no issues with this thread, and don't have much of an opinion on what Holland did.

I used to REALLY like the Orioles when I was a kid because they were really good with guys like Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally, Brooks Robinson, Paul Blair, and how can you not love a guy named Boog?

Over the years after that I lost track of them.

I guess that made me a fair-weather fan.

(I still like that their colors are Orange & Black)

GO GIANTS!!!!?!!

And an elrod, and a ss that hit .206 , but was loved for his glove, ...it was def a fun team to watch....^

Holland was joking around and so was the Japanese trainer. They appeared to be friends. Nothing to be offended about here. It is silly and unnecessary, but not offensive. I can say that with confidence, because i am very fond of Japanese food!

Alright, the Orioles and Giants fans here have weighed in and the best team from 2012-14, in spite of the two SF Giants World Series, is THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES!!!!

Congrats Dave! You win a fabulous vacation to Atlanta! Where you can hang out with habitually-average baseball player, Nick Markakis.

Best record, not best team, Bucky.  The Giants won one of those series as a Wild-Card team.

I'd love the trip to Atlanta, though.

.....and al bumbry, and al buford, and merv....

Al, al, al and merv...what an outfield
