All too common shitty diagnosis going on with too many good poeple.
Dear friend of mine, best guy in the land, has received a dreaded stage 4 tongue cancer diagnosis. Most likely HPV origin as he was not a regular smoker. *toke*
He did, however, enjoy his women (and occasional men) but was not a player or slut (too much).
For the unfamiliar, HPV is the human papillomavirus that causes cervical cancer in women, and via oral sex, throat cancer in men. Look up Michael Douglass.
He just got married last year to a beautiful younger girl with 2 daughters 8 and 11, and they had a surprise baby of their own a few months ago. My bud is 52 and full of life, I always lived vicariously through him when I was married as he was the confirmed bachelor of our group.
WTF! I lost my Mom and Dad to cancer and helped ease them both into the next life, I don't want to have to go thru that again.

Wishing your friend the best
Wishing your friend the best of luck. I would pass on to him to get a good support team together early. Someone who can deal with getting the best Dr. team you can get including a good oncologist. Most people have a nurse navigator who can play point guard for you on appointments and deal with insurance company's. The patient gets so much paper work and phone calls you really need a solid person who can be on top of it everyday. the less stress and worry you can pass on to others to help is very helpful. Most cancer patients can not do it all, even if you don't feel sick or look sick your really are. Have him ask lots of questions, before and after.
I know, I am in his shoes right now. I am in stage 3.5 after having 2 surgeries. Never felt sick only had a small clear spot on my check. I leave for SF on Monday to meet with my Oncologist to get on a chemo plan.
All I am getting this year for Christmas is a few Cat Scans a couple of shots and who knows what else.

Bart, I am sorry to hear that
Bart, I am sorry to hear that you are in the battle too, and I wish you the best doctors, support team, outcome, and life. Oral cancer is what my mother had, she "beat it" but the effects of radiation on her mouth and face were devastating. Burned up her slivary glads and she had lots of trouble talking after. We use to call her "The Racoon" because she always had to have a cup of water or other liquid to eat. It was a little welcome humor in the ensuing mess and it helped us all.
Be strong, love stronger, and, in the words of Warren Zevon:
Enjoy every sandwich!

Thanks Rocknrye, I will be
Thanks Rocknrye, I will be fine. They caught it soon enough before it went into my lymph glands or sinus. I have really good Dr's. I will not be having radiation mostly because of what you stated above. UCSF is one of the best Cancer Centers in the country so I am in good hands. I have good people around me looking out for me. It is the waiting that is the hard part.
I have been posting on the zone more because it has been raining here so I am bored. I just hope some of the advice I posted helps your friend because it is overwhelming. I tried to pass on some of the little problems I ran into. I just happened to have someone in the house who just got done with the whole cancer and insurance stuff so I had lots of help. The best thing you can do for your friend is to be there and be a good listener. Your friend will be going through lots of phases and emotions so a good friend is a really good thing.
Happy Holiday to You your family and your Friend

Just back from my Mexican
Just back from my Mexican Scuba break of the Cancer Zone.Three thing's that have helped Bart and I are:
1.Putting together the best ,professinal ,experienced in the specific cancer, with best results, medical team.
2.Taking a break from fretting and do whatever it is that you love in life that enriches you. Music has been our release and healing.
3.Surround your yourself/friend with positive people who will support your friend.
"Ms Judit has been a great supportive person"
We LOVE you JUDIT!
