Paul, Keith and Joe have played a few times in Nevada City

Joe Craven did a show called The Painted Mandolin I missed because DNB playing the same night in town. It is music interpertations  of Jerry Garcia's music.

Nice ....

Show was fun but IMHO the Freight & Salvage is just not a good venue for Achilles Wheel & Friends.....

Of course Joe Craven and Keith Greninger augmenting this band made for some mighty fine vocals, jams and more intricate interplay between all involved.

Thing is, as a working musician myself, there are times when I've played rock clubs with a bluegrass band and the sound engineer mixed the band as if it were a rock band, i.e. too loud in the monitors and house....   Well the exact opposite occured at the Freight & Salvage at this gig.

The engineers, who I presume are way more aligned with acoustic bands performing pristinely into mics undermixed this assemblage.
There was very little in the way of audible bass during this show and Shelby  of Achilles Wheel generally emits beautiful and impactful Alembic 6 string bass tones.
You could vaguely hear bass  - but you just couldn't feel it.

Also - it's almost too formal a venue for Achilles.
I'm not dissing anyone for their age but 1/2 the attendees were blue haired old ladies tapping their toes in the upper section of the room.

I saw some vids of AWs NYE throwdown and that looked like one hell of a lot more fun than 12/30.

Regardless - AW were good, Joe Craven added a lot and Keith Greninger really carried the day with terrific songs, singing and engagement....

Nevada City is always a party. The more popular AC is getting the less they are playing around here. I wish Mikail Graham could get in the mix, he is a awesome sound guy and a great guitar player. To bad he has a full time gig doing sound for the Center for the Arts.

Another Nevada City gem is Saul Rayo and his Ancient Wave Studios. This place is beautiful.

Great Thread!

I have been friends and a fan with most of the guys in Achilles Wheel for many years.

Paul Kamm with his wife Eleanor MacDonald have been making music together for years. Paul is a awesome song writer and Eleanor has a great voice. Just turning a few people on to the kind of folk music they have been making in Nevada City, their mentor U Utah Phillips passed away a few years ago leaving Paul the torch to write the songs America need to hear today.

this guy can write and he is pretty good on Guitar also.

plus he plays in a fun group called Buck Love and the Humperheads a staple around these parts for a good dance party whenever they play. Plus he is in the DeadBeats  and the list goes on and on. All top notch bands.

This lazy traveler hopes that they continue to visit us in the Bay Area as often as they can.  I told that to them personally.  They are always welcome here.
