Great singer-songwriter. I got to see him at Grady Gammage Auditorium on the Arizona State Universtity campus years ago. Last major work of Frank Lloyd Wright.
Wonderful accolades pouring in, and touting him as Canada's greatest troubadour. He wrote so many great songs . One of my faves of Gordon's was "Affair on Eighth Avenue." Also liked the idea behind "Rainy Day People."
While he WAS great, I also hope it might bring some attention to another great from Canada, the unsung Bruce Cockburn.
“I can’t think of any Gordon Lightfoot song I don’t like. Every time I hear a song of his, it’s like I wish it would last forever… Lightfoot became a mentor for a long time. I think he probably still is to this day.”—Bob Dylan

His music permeated Canadian
His music permeated Canadian radio in the 70's and beyond. Saw him in 1991 at an 'eco-festival' in BC. RIP Canuck legend.

I really dig his Warner
I really dig his Warner/Reprise albums from the '70s. Such a great band he had then. As well as songs previously referenced, "Ten Degrees And Getting Colder", "Song For A Winter's Night", and "Cold On The Shoulder" (all which were staples of Tony Rice's performance repertoire) were stellar. The quality of his voice and his phrasing always struck me as reassuringly Canadian. He had struggles with alcohol and tempestuous relationships (one of his paramours was the notorious Cathy "Dimebag" Smith, the lady who injected John Belushi's fatal speedball), he crafted a long and productive career, and has rightly earned his place in the pantheon of Canadian musicians and songwriters.
