Got my Bass Back from the Shop!

Forums:

Upgraded my Fender Jazz bass by replacing the stock pickups with Lindy Fralin's, replaced the neck with a maple Geddy Lee model neck, and strung it up with a set of GHS Boomers!

I'm loving the tones i'm getting out of this thing and the neck is so smooth and easy to play.

Any else have any cool instrument stories of late?

Pretty nice

I've got an early 60's Gibson 12-string (the cheap model, I forget the number) that has a flying bridge on it that sounds terrible.  I'm taking it up to the Martin shop soon to have them put on an attached bridge which will result in a much deeper and richer tone.

Nice, I have an older (80's?) black Fender Jazzmaster.

I gave it to my son, like everything else.

Recently got a good deal on an old Tiesco with gold foil pickups.  Gonna gut it and put one of the pickups in this pink stray copy8EC89113-1BEF-4C6F-868A-440A17A8D325.jpeg

Just play the strat as is...unless you want lots of noise.

Don't think i've played bass on stage for 20 years (done maybe 400 gigs before that),  guitar has always been my main gig, but here's my basses; (Ibanez Roadstar, fretless Yamaha, and the mystery resonator)

^sweet resonator bass- how does it sound? don't think i've played one.

Hoover, what year is that Tiesco?

60s?

Get LOW!

Get high too, if you like.

<sweet resonator bass- how does it sound?>

It sounds pretty funky, kind of an odd bird to play (lots of personality, goes out of tune easily),  so more for fun home jams and eye candy on the wall.

I use to own a Teisco del Rey, pink acrylic, "lipstick" pickup, lol, traded it in along with a 1930's Epiphone 'ƒ' holed acoustic for a Strat back in 1983 (Norms rare guitars in Reseda), that was my main axe until my buddy made this for me...  still needs some tweeking, but love the all NW woods

Good call on the fralin pick ups.

i've been tempted to get one of their custom rapped split coils put in my 80's Japanese P bass but I'm a lazy man.

I was gifted this upright bass. Pretty sweet. I don't know much about it but I'm learning my way around it. Installed a pickup and made the stand myself.

Sweet looking upright!

Someone gifted you that? That is seriously awesome- do you know much about the bass, where it was made, etc?

Here's my collection, including my upright which i bought from Zoner Treblemaker (i think that was his handle.. good dude!) .. it's an entry level German made student bass, but i'm not quite ready for Carnegie Hall, so it suits my purposes for now..20181108_173257.jpg

There is no label inside but it has "John Johnson Allentown PA" written in pencil on the inside of the bridge.

Here are the plans I used for the stand. Works great. The only difference is that I used some old full dimension lumber I had on hand.

that's a cool bass stand, but does it scratch the instrument?

Thin cork! ahh, i see..

Not at all. I used the fuzzy half of some velcro on the faces that make contact  Peel and stick.

Btw thanks to all for sharing your interesting instruments. Not the usual items. Fun bunch.

Great post, awesome instruments everyone, now just need an endowment from the arts to get us all together for that monster jam, lol

yeah man.. monster jam.. all are welcome

I am hoping to finish my jam room this weekend. Can't wait...

A couple teaser pics from last weekend without most instruments;

The basement bass gear - it's our oldest who is the bassist, and as such - is currently in 3 cover bands along with his high school jazz and concert bands.

I believe everything is stock on them - the Gibson has flatwounds and with the shorter scale, it's by far the easiest to play. The boy is much more Dream Theater than Phil on the 6 string - but he's young at this point...

For the guitar players;

The PRS is stock - but the others have all had work done. The strat is a 50th anny that came with a non-reverse wound middle pickup so I had an Illitch silent circuit back plate added (Ernie Ball Music Man uses the same thing on their single coil guitars) since every position had 60-cycle hum. Fantastic addition - would recommend for any single coil guitar that hums. It's my "clean setting" guitar. The PRS is for the heavier/dirtier stuff. The Godin Artisan (brown tele shape) has been our youngest's "number 1" for the past year or more - so that's his now. I replaced the pickups with Fralin P92's. The semi-hollow is a St. Blues 61 South and was my 5-string Open G guitar until a car accident a couple years ago left me unable to form the essential Keith riff hand positions. It's now got an old Lace Sensor in the bridge/Fralin P90 in the neck and I keep it tuned down a half step.

The Martin is a Custom they made for a Canadian music company - number 2 of 100. My youngest has the Simon & Patrick acoustic for when he's taking a break from his Anti-Flag or Ice Nine Kills punky stuff and wants to strum some Petty or Beatles with his parents. That's happened twice...
