Gov't Mule Freebie

Forums:

I have one extra ticket for tomorrow's Gov't Mule show (Sunday, June 19th) at the Libbey Bowl in Ojai, CA. I know it's a long shot, since there aren't many of us in the LA area, but I figured I'd give it a shot. It's a digital ticket, so I can transfer it, or we can meet up before we go in.

Anyone interested? Racket, are you lurking? My email is in my profile.

Most generous, Mike.

Nice Offer Mike ! Id Go But My Health Isn't Quite Up To Par Yet - The Libbey Bowl Is A Cool Place To See A Show.

Helluva shot, Klondike. Glad you got to go.

Headed out the door shortly to get my Mule on. I'll be hanging in the park with some friends for a few hours before the show. The forecast is for 78 at showtime, and going down to 68. Looks like a picture-perfect day. Any last minute takers for my extra can reach me by email, which is in my profile.

Really good show in Ojai last night.

I am not too familiar with Govt Mule but the end of that 2nd set looks fantastic! That was a very generous offer, Mike, and I wish I could have joined you up there.

Thx Mike

Dude nice vids.  Who is playing bass on Freeway Jam ??????

Thanks, but the only video that's mine is Beautifully Broken. We were seated in the last row of the amphitheater. I have video of She Said, She Said and Tomorrow Never Knows, but it's really shaky and out of focus.

<< really good show

That's it ? Really ?  WTF Mike, I can see leaving that kind of review burnt fried melba toast right after a show but you've had a while now. How was the show reeeaaaalllly ?

Not familiar strawbud ? Go immerse yerself in their 1st release just called Gov't Mule. After that Dose and you will be fully baptized into the Holy Spirit of the Mule and very soon you'll notice the life lift.

Oh yeah,  nice offer Mike,, I would have taken you up on it myself but,  "as as you see I've got to drive the train". (Name the movie quote, win a prize)

Lol

Cool/Thanks. Will do for sure. I have seen them twice and it lit no fire whatsoever.

Lol at not with the lol comment.

Sorry about that, Ras. I had forgotten that you hang on my every word.

Sunday night was a really good show. The Libbey Bowl is an 800 seat amphitheater under tarps and lined by twisted sycamores in a nice little city park, with a little slice of GA lawn at the back. We were located in the last row of seats just to the right of the soundboard. As soon as band started, Warren seemed to encourage folks to come down front, and many did, but my party hung back because, you know, covid and we're old.

I'm not really a fan of the Mule, but I love me some Warren Haynes. The only time I'd seen the Mule before was 12/31/00, and it was just Warren and Matt at that point, with Warren playing acoustic, and I have a vague memory of Mike Gordon sitting in for a tune or two. The Mule we saw Sunday night was a much more fleshed out version of the old plow-puller, with the addition of a bass player, and a keyboard player who also strapped on a guitar at a couple of points.

The first set was stuff I mostly wasn't familiar with. All Mule originals, and kind of a showcase of Warren's influences in a way, but despite my lack of familiarity, I found myself dancing to a lot of it at times.

The second set and encore, on the other hand, were all covers, except for Banks of the Deep End and Beautifully Broken, which is one of my favorite Warren tunes (the  BB from the Q on 06/30/2001 at the Greek in Berkeley, which I got to view from side stage just behind Robbie Taylor, is still sizzling in the recesses of my mind.) After BOTDE and a few blues standards, the band launched into a reggaefied version of Steve Miller's The Joker that was both funky and funny. The Joker was followed by Jeff Beck's Freeway Jam, which many seemed to recognize as a Beck tune even if we couldn't name the tune, or maybe that was just me.

Next up was Beautifully Broken, and this is where the show really took off for me. BB flowed into She Said, She Said, which is probably my favorite Warren cover tune (and again, The Q from 6/30/2001 has a great version). SSSS then flowed into a long Tomorrow Never Knows jam, that I would describe as twisted, slippery, and maybe even a little dangerous to a person's sense of balance and all that he or she may think is right, but not so scary that it couldn't contain teases of Day Tripper and Taxman. That was followed by a cover of Humble Pie's 30 Days in the Hole, with a bit of their I Don't Need No Doctor mixed in for good measure. For an encore, we got Elmore James' Dust My Broom soundalike Blues Before Sunrise, but no one was complaining about the similarity.

So there you go, Ras. A few days late and more than a dollar short. It's been a busy week or so for me. What can I tell you?

Hey Ras, hopefully you don't start telling me that I need get on board with Widespread Panic too. I already have a crazy friend on that train but I think I'm good. Thanks.

<< you hang on my every word

Tiz true, tiz true

Happy you all had a good time. Good review man.

Mule is a dose of heavy rockin religion and ol Warren is the preacher layin it down right. The Mule is special.

" You get wise Jake,  you get to church "

Brother strawbud, Jimmy Herring is soooo worth seeing every chance you get even if you have to suffer thru John Bell vocals.
