Grateful Dead’s Best Musical Passages

Forums:

11/20/78 is a unique show with some of the most beautiful instrumental jams.

Legend has it Bob was sick and couldn't’ even make it to the stage for the second set.

Set two starts out with a Jerry lead creative jam for over 10 minutes.

The second track is the drums portion only to go back into another 10-minute instrumental jam, which is fantastic.

(Set 2 begins at track 12, check it out)

(Shakedown>If I Had the World to Give is also unbelievable)

What are your favorite musical passages from the Grateful Dead?

84 greek dark star....

Watkins Glen soundcheck jam is right up there.

73-90 was ok

I've always loved this PITB into UJB. Never heard them play like this ever. They just get way out there. And the space>spanish jam is a keeper also.

9/19/90 has a cool passage.

Ha ha. Is that the one you tossed out your car? I'll check it out.

I was afraid of most '84 shows, but I found a stub to 10/17/84 (that i don't re-call). The Dead's first show at the Brendon Byrne Arena.

Great sound board recording of Help>Slip.

Some shows from 68-69?

First shows at Brendon Byrne were 83 with Stephen Stills as guest.

And why were you afraid of 84 shows Odysseus? Was probably my favorite year with epic shows. Irvine, Cal Expo, Greek, Ventura and the New Years run.

True. I was at the "Black Queen" night - 4/16/83.

Jerry didn't look well in 1984, Joe C.

Thanks for the 11. 20. 78 link. Cool Jerry.

He didn't look well but he sure did rip it up a lot. Some killer moments in that year.

I am revisiting GD 1984. So far so good.

6/24/76 China > Rider (Super EPIC!)
The Other One > Spanish Jam is ridiculous too.

I am playing the 6/26/74 shows you linked, starting with the Jam>China>Rider.

I have the Dicks Picks, I like this matrix.

I neglected to mention that FAT Distorted bass solo at the end of Truckin' in the 6/24/74 show I inadvertently mis-dated above that leads into the Other One.

Odysseus here's a few hot recommendations for 84 that I saw.

Irvine 4/7/84 whole show

Cal Expo 5/9/84-   Deal. I need a miracle>Bertha Epic!!

Greek 7/13/84-   Dark Star encore (might be my favorite version. Trippy and powerful)

Greek 7/15/84  whole show is perfect.

Ventura 7/21-22/84 both shows. Best of Ventura imo.

12/31/84  whole show. My favorite Shakedown Street of all time. Steve Parrish's wife and infant daughter died in a car crash a few days before. Also my only New Years shows.

Jam coming out of drums in the Dark Star from 5-15-70.

The end of the 4-8-72 Dark Star comes to mind.

There's a really nice one from a summer 76 show that stands out in my mind but I can't remember it.. might be 6/29 or 7/17

No streaming at work, but I DID locate my CD-R of the Providence '74 show and am enjoying it on my headphones...

Long Beach, CA 12/15/72

He's Gone > Truckin' > Dark Star > Morning Dew

New Betty Board this year. Wow!

12/15/72

I-95

Wait...what?

> The end of the 4-8-72 Dark Star comes to mind.

Agreed, and the first 8 minutes of that Dark Star is some of my favorite GD music...

That two-chord major 7th jam post-Dark Star on that single-disc Dick's Picks. 10/31/71, maybe?

Riiiiiiiiiiil purty.

I've been listening to that 12-15-72 show all week, can't get enough of that jam after Truckin' before the 1st Dark Star verse.

I used to love watching that Grateful Dead bonus disc footage of the boys jamming it out.  I think it was during TOO>Spanish Jam>MLB segment, but my memory's just a bit foggy.

Totally mesmerizing...

best Tighten up jam ever played.. and maybe the final one ever played.

seriously has not one person mentioned hands down the all time greatest gd musical passage imaginable?

2/18/71 capitol-- beautiful jam out of wharf rat

end of discussion!

Cryptical>Drums>Too>Cryptical.

BAM!

They are just the best!!!!!!

4-15-70   The jam out of drums during that's if for the other one is tribal and unlike any other jam I know of.  It's followed by a short drum duet before dropping back into the other one.  the cryptical reprise drops seamlessly into Dire Wolf.  One of my favorite early GD moments.

the couple times they nailed the pyramid is def very cool.

playin'>ujb>morning dew>ujb>playin'

4-29-71 The jam out of drums is one of my all time favorites. Track 23

ogkb I was thinking of the "pyramid" recently and pulled out the 11/17/73 show. Epic!

Bill Walton must have been thrilled. wink

Playin'> MLBJ> He's Gone  12-02-73

Nice call Ken. I was thinking of that one too.

Another:

9/19/90

Let it grow>Drums

I'll take any Darkstar any year though I am very fond of the 90's Terrapin Jam..e.g..Deer Creek93, RFK 93, Vegas 94...

For those with much less of an attention span...

Another famous one--all of 'em I'm listing are famous, hence them being on youtube.  It's the only way to make it easy for the good folks to give 'em a listen.  Negative is you can't provide any of the lesser known but equally great stuff.  Not a perfect world.

Bid You Goodnight Jam>Caution Jam - Fillmore W - 3/2/69
