Grateful Shred in Ojai Tonight

Forums:

Any other SoCal zoners going to the show tonight? This is my first time seeing this band, and I'm psyched to be seeing a show at the Libbey Bowl again. It's quickly become one of my all time favorite venues.

Enjoy the show!

Ahoy Mike! I think I may be hitting that one as well! I'll look for you up there.

Cool. I'll be the guy with a beard wearing a tie dye.

Anyone else? PLF? Racket? Or Gravytrain if you're lurking?

I enjoy the Libby bowl.  Last time there was for Eric burdons  75th birthday.

Grateful Shred don't shred IMHO!

Love The L Bowl i am Buzzed and no way making it up tonight

Well then dolittle, I guess Mike won't look for you there.

I've not seen this band, but if I remember what I read about them, they're all professional LA studio musicians who put this group together as just a fun off-night goof and discovered they enjoyed it and that many other people did too.

I'd guess they're all pretty good players and probably not a "Grateful Dead impersonator" in the bunch, which should attract some folks to them.

We'll be expecting a review gentlemen.

Is this the band John Kadlecik had issues with?

All I know Lance is I watched a show they did out east (maybe Brooklyn Bowl?) a few years ago and they were lackluster and seemed very intimidated and not confident in their playing and basically they sucked..

Here it is. I was right in my first assessment. But who am I to tell someone what they can like.

Love the Shred. They approach the music via the '72 to '74 lens, doing so in a unique fashion that blends in a fabric of Laurel Canyon.

I think they really stand out among GD cover bands.

They are a very good and fun band that I would recommend seeing. I really enjoyed the show. The venue was great too and packed with happy campers for good music under the stars which was just about perfect to me.

Some key highlights were Eyes, China>Rider and Scarlet>Fire.

doolittle, there's a difference between trolling and just being a dick, and you don't seem to be very adept at either one of them.

Last night was a good time. As I mentioned earlier, the LIbbey Bowl has become one of my favorite places to see a show. Ojai is a cool little town, and the bowl is located in a nice little park right in the heart of town. There's about 1000 seats and a little slice of lawn that holds another few hundred people, so it's one of the smaller outdoor venues of this kind I've been to. It's also one of the most relaxed places I've seen shows. They let you leave the ticketed area and come back in, and while they've had ushers patrolling the aisles at previous shows I've been to there, there were none to be found last night, nor was there a uniformed police presence, and everything worked out just fine. There was dancing down front and in the aisles from the first note to the last.

As for the band, I was pretty impressed by them for the most part. From what I've read about them, they have four core players, three guitarists and a bass player, supplemented by a rotating cast of other players. Last night, there were seven players on stage, with two drummers and a keyboardist joining the core four.

I thought the sound was kind of muddy for the first couple of tunes, and while they got that straightened out fairly quickly, I'm not sure I'm a fan of the three guitars approach. Don't get me wrong, it was rhythmically powerful to have all three guitars in sync at times, the big Jam in the middle of EOTW comes to mind, but at the same time I thought it was kind of lacking the conversational, call-and-response qualities that really make this kind of music so interesting to me. It was also hard to distinguish the guitar voices; there were two Telecasters and an SG, and with two Teles in the mix, I found it difficult to tell who was playing what at times.

That said, the band definitely achieved lift-off a few times over the course of the evening, and they got me up and dancing a few times too, even though my arthritic hips were telling me to keep my ass in my seat. I also want to say here that this band and this show had a bit of a disadvantage in my mind, coming as it did just a few days after I watched the webcasts of the Billy & The KIds shows from Red Rocks. It's probably not fair to compare the two bands, but it's hard not to after seeing Kreutzmann and Company really shine in Colorado last week.

> Is this the band John Kadlecik had issues with?

No, Kadlecic's "literally risking their lives" beef was with a Florida band named Headstash.

https://www.jambase.com/article/headstash-john-kadlecik-critique

doesn't look like a total sausage fest.  that in and of itself is winning.

Glad you had a good time Mike! I still think they suck and wouldn"t pay money to see them. That is MY opinion! But I'm not a fan of tribute or cover bands! Create your own stuff is my motto.

my old neigborhood, went to sbcc hotel restaurant program in 84-86, this hippy chick was from there got us in the hotsprings for free, it was narly

I very much enjoyed the show yesterday in Felton. I would see them again! They're playing the songs I love with a fresh sound and sweet arrangements, good vocals too.

the Shred is not a clone GD band, and that's a good thing.
More like a clone JRAD. ;)

I intend to go see Grateful Shred when they play in Humboldt on Oct. 5th

Two of the guys went back to their own band(Mapache) -- one being the tastiest guitar player in the band.   It became a revolving cast once those 2 left. Dan is the closest bass player to Lesh out there. The other dude that sings is cool but the band was better before the Mapache guys left.   I'm done with GD covers but those dudes and Dan's dialing in of the sound worked well.

i heard great felton reviews

Looks like these July shows were the first shows without Mapache.    Didn't know they left, interesting.  Wonder if it's permanent or just July.

I'm guessing permanent --- I've been there, trying to stay alive with only gig bucks is a hard life.  You need a nurse or teacher wife that actually supports the household.  Countless women have kept the music alive.  I've been in numerous bands over the years -- it is akin to a marriage.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  Many bands were stronger with certain players but the dynamic doesn't work.

Bummer. Where did you see that, Nanc?

Hoping theyre  referring to their indoor shows where the spread occurred

This article from June 28th in the New York Times gives me hope for the long term efficacy of the mRNA vaccines.  As long as you're vaccinated with one of them, you should be okay:

> Hoping theyre  referring to their indoor shows where the spread occurred

Me too, although at the Ojai show, there were probably a couple hundred people dancing down in front of the stage. We stayed in our seats, which were in the last rows, but I'm thinking I should probably get tested this week.

Are you symptomatic, Mike?

No, but I'm high risk because of an existing immune system condition.

Suppose it doesn't hurt to be thorough, but if you're vaccinated and asymptomatic, I doubt you have anything to worry about.  Best of luck and good health to you.

My friend who was at Grateful Shred and works for the VA with vulnerable populations is getting tested too. The health experts say it's unlikely that vaccinated can be carriers, but nobody wants to risk being a Covid Mary, nobody  besides the unvaccinated and MAGA morons.

Thanks, Dave. I hear what you're saying, but I'm thinking this is one of those better safe than sorry things. I'll see how I feel over the next few days.

> The health experts say it's unlikely that vaccinated can be carriers

The health 'experts' are making it up as they go along.    We haven't realized this yet?

Wake up to find out that you are the spreader of disease just doesn't have the same ring to it.

I went to a superspreader event and all I got was this lousy t-shirt could be used to move some merch though.

from CDC

and sure, science is always evolving

>Currently authorized vaccines in the United States are highly effective at protecting vaccinated people against symptomatic and severe COVID-19. Additionally, a growing body of evidence suggests that fully vaccinated people are less likely to have asymptomatic infection or transmit SARS-CoV-2 to others.5 days ago

Luckily my friends who were at the outdoor Felton show are testing negative. I was tested this morning, after reading more about these super spreader shows, including the outdoor ones

too many anti vaxxers in the crowd

I'm a little surprised there hasn't been a bit more info on which shows had multiple positives.

After looking at their CA show list again, I see that of the three only the small Felton Music Hall (Moldy DonQ's) was an indoor show.

I know the new owners fixed the place up, but I wonder if they got all the mold out of that musty old dump?

Grateful Shred had an indoor show at the Moroccan Lounge in LA on Thursday 7/15. This is a tiny room.

Another spreader event identified today:

CC724605-A828-4E37-89CF-29CF1E3C3552.jpeg

Cases (hospitalizations and deaths) are going up in my state of ct, nationally, and  worldwide. This fucking sucks, thanks antivaxxer asswipes. Just when you thought it might be safe to go back in the water. Making me rethink the whole summer concert scene. Wishing mikee and everyone a clean bill of health. Be careful folks, eliminate or at least limit Close Encounters.

>We are writing to let you know that there has been report of a positive Covid test from at least 1 person at the show at Roaring Camp on Saturday July 17th, and multiple confirmed cases of Covid 19 from people that attended our concert at Felton Music Hall on Sunday July 18th.

We encourage anyone that attended those shows to go and get tested.

Good thing they have a few weeks off until their next dates....

From the Mercury News article: Grateful Spread

It's coming up on two weeks and I'm still asympomatic. My fingers are still crossed though. It sounds like the problem might have been up in Felton more than Ojai or LA.

There were confirmed cases from the indoor LA show. I think you are past the danger zone, though. One person reported exposure Thursday > symptomatic Monday. From PT:

Does anyone know if the indoor Shred show required proof of vacc/neg test to enter?

Sorry

Double post

They did not require proof

I was just offered a refund for Greensky tomorrow after questioning why they aren't asking for proof of vaccination.

Wow, Nancy. That's an answer?  Way to take it seriously, guys...

Get the money
Dollar, dollar bill y'all

The full answer

>Nancy,

Thank you for the email. Currently it is our understanding that no one has contracted Covid at any of the outdoor shows. For these Greensky shows we are going to be super safe, ensuring employees are wearing masks and enforcing the pods, and we feel incredibly confident it will be a safe situation.

We really encourage everyone to get vaccines, and are not going to be giving any more shifts to employees who are not vaccinated moving forward, and everyone employees and patrons are going to need to wear masks indoors for a while. We are considering the mandated vaccine position, though as a small business its hard to be the ones setting that policy when its unfortunately become such a hot button issue.

I hope you feel comfortable and safe coming to the Greensky shows like we do, otherwise im happy to issue you a refund. thank you for your support!

Nancy is acting like a big time Karen. Very poor form.

And starting next week and not as good:

An unvaxxed musician and his wife who played indooors in Marin Co. recently (not Jackie Greene) have tested postive for Covid Sars-2 as have some others who were in attendance. He feels terrible about it, is sorry, embarrassed, and he and his wife will be vaccinated as soon as recommended.

I don't think they are married Judit, but yeah......it's a little ridiculous

Where can you play indoors in Marin?

>He feels terrible about it, is sorry, embarrassed, and he and his wife will be vaccinated as soon as recommended.

are you his spokesperson and why, if he's so sorry can't you say his name?

Sorry I assumed, Woz.

Nancy, I am not his spokesperson. We're Facebook friends. It's funny that even your questions sound like accusations. Well, not really funny, more off-putting. What do you mean, why can't I say his name? Are you saying it that way because I didn't jump when you first asked? The answer to why I didn't answer with his name is that I was in a long medical appt. I'm home now.

It was at the Paper Creek Mill Saloon in Forest Knolls. His name is Danny Uzilevsky. I admire his coming forward to let people know what the story is.

"My dear fellow West Marin folks and music lovers...

As you are likely aware, there was a significant outbreak of Covid-19 following our Papermill show on Sunday July 18th. Lots of attendees (both vaccinated and not) contracted the virus afterward. I was one of those people, as was Essence.

While I'm fairly certain that I wasn't the one to infect people, but rather an infectee, I feel must take responsibility for not letting you all know sooner."

There's more, it's worth reading.

Papermill Creek Saloon has been having shows inside since early June, I've been to several. Essence is Danny's partner. A number of other local musicians have tested positive, I don't think they are all related cases but I suppose they could be.

Judit, you neglected to state his name earlier so it sounded like you didn't want to reveal it. As simple as that, dear Judit.

and wtf, why were these musicians anti vaxxers ?!
no wonder they're embarrassed

I would offer the Karen move would be writing a band to complain they were mandating vax/mask not the other way around.
