Greetings From Asbury Pink Talking Fish Park, Jerseyland...

Forums:

Kinda muggy inland yesterday.  So I took Hüsky out to the Coast to the "Jams On The Sand"  free show.

These happen every Thursday night on the North side of Convention Hall.  Last week was Twiddle Dude,  'Mehali'  I believe.  Missed that one.
Next week is 'Kung Fu'  I think.

Dogs are not allowed inside the venue,  unless they are certified Service Dawgs.  But 'the venue'  is a rectangle of sandy beach with snow-fence delineating that space from the public beach.

Setlist not up yet,  but it was Ocean - Themed. You're likely to find it here in the near Future:

So I've attended a handful of these "Jams On The Sand"  shows in the past,  and all have been Big Fun at a great price.  If it rains,  they bring the show indoors (Convention Hall).  Not a huge crowd,  which is nice.

However,  first time I brought the Doggie.   He's been to  AP before (there's a leash-free Dawg Beach) so he lieks the place.  Very Dog-friendly town.  Most of the outdoor-table restaurants and bars will provide a tasty container of Ice Water for your pooch.

As usual,  I stopped at Bond Street for a Pint and Snack.  Good fries there,  but I tried the Gumbo (daily special),  which was OK.  Another scoop of rice and it would have been just right.  Good cheap Cold Sierra Pint.

The outdoor seating area has wooden picnic tables and benches.  Not high-tech,  but comfortable enough.  A nice young couple had their Boston Terriers,  and we chatted all about their history,  foster homes,  and doggy topics.  The pups all enjoyed a french-fry or Andouille sausage treat.  They would have stolen all of our food in seconds,  given the chance.

So having lagged and lollygagged all afternoon,  I arrived in time to miss the opener and PTF's first set.  Band equipment was tarped - up as their was a threat of Summer Thunderstorm.  But it did not rain.  Just a perfect evening at the Coast,  with the remnants of the Full Strawberry Moon illuminating the choppy Atlantic Ocean.

We stayed outside the snow fence with a good - sized crowd of other beachgoers who had opted to bring their  coolers for a beachside picnic.  Hüsky enjoyed frolicking in the cool sand,  but is still scared of the Ocean.  A nice young couple from Tabernacle,  South Jerseyland gave H.I.M.  some of their Turkey sandwich (no Omion) and he enjoyed all the kids and grown-ups coming over to scratch his fuzzy ears.

Besides the T-Heads,  Floyd & Phish tunes,  the PTF did a nice version of  "Drowned" from Quadrophenia.

"... There are men high up there fishing
Haven't seen quite enough of the world
Ooh, I ain't seen a sign of my heroes
And I'm still diving down for pearls

Oh, let me flow into the ocean
Yeah, let me get back to the sea
Let me be stormy and let me be calm
Let the tide in and set me free

I'm flowing under bridges
Then flying through the sky
I'm traveling down cold metal
Just a tear in a baby's eye

Oh, let me flow into the ocean
Oh, let me get back to the sea
Oh, let me be stormy and let me be calm
Let the tide in and set me free, set me free

I am not the actor
This can't be the scene
But I am in the water
As far as I can see

Oh, I'm remembering distant memories
Recalling other names
Rippling over canyons
And boiling in the train

Oh, let me flow into the ocean
Let me get back to the sea
Let me be stormy and let me be calm
Let the tide in and set me free, set me free

Set me free, I wanna drown in cold water..."

So I guess that's a PTF cover of Phish covering The Who,  right ??

Anyway,  it was a splendid Summer evening at the Coast;  nice tunes,  lovely crowd.  Technically the actual "Dog Beach" is a few yards further North,  but other people also brought their pups.  He's very well-behaved in public  settings and likes jamband music.  Asbury Park is a very Dog-friendly place.

The young Lady from Tabernacle,  Michelle,  said  "This is the coolest venue in Jerseyland,"  and I have to agree.

Glad you love my Old Hometown... Jersey Proud my old friend...

Always have  Fun visiting there,  Mr. Coyotte.

Nice easy drive to & fro and Dog likes the Beach.

Although it's not a long drive,  I got there a bit late because of the Dog.  He couldn't make up his mind about which Ride to cruise.

Bronco is fun...

Then again,  Great White Shark carries more Broads...

We ended up taking the 'Vette...  easier to find a parking spot.

One thing you have to watch in that town...

The parking.  Used to be Sunset Ave.  had some free spots a couple blocks from the beach.

Now those are all numbered,  and ya gotta pay.

Those 'parking enforcement' vehicles constantly creep around issuing tickets.  They got computers & shit.

Thanks to Bob Schultz Photography for the pics!

The photo gives you an idea of the location and size of the venue.  I'd say the photog was up in Convention Hall by the shuffleboard courts.ptf1 - Copy (2).jpg

Cool picture.  That looks like a good time.

Daytime image here.  Behind the Bassist  there's  a flat area of big Rocks you can walk around on when the Tide is low enough.ptf2.jpg

I was lurking about where the circle is,  but the arrow points to a more open area of Sand where the pup could run around some.

Looks like a sweet place. Glad you went, Stu.

There is so much good music happening in Asbury Park, NJ these days it isn't funny. Now that Bowery Presents is doing shows at Asbury Lanes, Live Nation's strangle hold on booking decent sized touring bands has been broken. Considering the size of AP, having Convention Hall, The Paramount Theater, Asbury Lanes, The Stone Pony, The Wonderbar, The Saint, House of Independents and at least 5 smaller places all booking original music, the place is, literally, rocking around the clock. Add the inaugural Sea, Hear, Now festival, which will be a major outdoor festival that will attract bigger names next year and the Light of Day Festival during Jan with over 100 acts scattered around town and Asbury Park has become a music lover's dream.

Cool pics and great setup!

Good deal, Stu.

As Mr. Skif points out,  Asbury Park has all sorts of Musical Fun.  Stone Pony was closed Thursday night,  but they have Outdoor events all Summer.

Dog & I strolled around Ocean Ave. for an hour  after PTF ended.  WonderBar had some '80's DJ scene.  The Pinball place was happening.  Korean Taco place was closed,  like Pop's Garage.

Nice thing about the 'Jams On The Sand' series is one can bring a low-profile Dawg to participate.  Hüsky socializes very well,  and naturally camouflages H.I.M.self when Truant officers show up.  He really digs the Coastal urban Hipster scene.

Asbury Park cops don't seem to be concerned,  and of course he's all leashed & licensed.
