Gun Shots in the Neighborhood

Forums:

Gun shots in the country are part of the natural soundscape.  But we are in North Portland and hearing them close by is a little more concerning.

Do you folks often hear shootings in your neighborhood?

Any day now we should be hearing folks sighting in their rifles across the valley just before deer season. Other than that and occasional target practice throughout the year, no.

Not here, either.

Occasionally, while living in the Humboldt Park area.

Recently, it sure sounded that way one evening.

Lots of fireworks in Corvallis (rare shooting, but i'm near campus),

Lots of gun shots at the cabin near Williams, Oregon (like many times a day)

Bow season just started here,  although some farmers have 'nuisance permits'  to shoot deer year 'round.
It's legal to shoot some critters without a hunting license all year.

About 12 miles NW is our state capitol and crack-town,  Trenton.  Another double shooting there the other day;  one guy dead and the other grazed.  That happens practically every week there.  "The Bloods" are usually involved,  although the cops don't publicize the gang factor much anymore.

We hear gunshots from our house regularly. When we first moved into our neighborhood, we were outside our house and heard what we thought were fireworks.  "Nope," said our neighbor.   "Those were gunshots."

Couple of weeks ago we heard the familiar "pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop" and my wife looked at each other.  3 people shot at our local park

Nope, but read about local shootings almost daily it seems....

No, thankfully that's not part of the soundscape in my neighborhood.  We do have an inordinate amount of crazy people yelling in the streets, though.

Life during wartime....

Yes, but it is the "country" & hunting season is upon us.

I hear them occasionally, usually coming from across the river and echoing over the hills.

A few years ago, over wine at a neighbors patio, we saw a rat run from their chicken coop toward their fire pit.... they told me that their teenage son sometimes shot his rifle at the rats in their backyard. So who knows where the gunshots come from... I should also note, that in 11 years in this house, I never heard of any criminal activities stemming from gunfire anywhere close by.

Portland can get a little sketchy.

In my old hood which was in a nice part of the Mission district in SF (close to Dolores Park) I heard distant gunshots all the time. People were shot a block away 3 times while I lived there in 15 years. New hood more of a screaming mentally ill type spot. Hey, it's the city. It happens

in philadelphia, yes. up here in the woods of vermont, yes.

I have lived in the middle east for the past 6 years.  I cannot remember ever hearing a gunshot, or reading about a local shooting in the news.  I feel much safer here than I did when I was in north Portland last month.

Weekends / rainy days I hear a lot of large-caliber automatic weapon shots,  for hours on end.  That's from the local military base. They're 5-6 miles away but have various ranges scattered around.  You can actually drive through many of the firing-range areas,  but you need paperwork to drive "on base".

I actually had a visitor pass last year,  as there was a great Dog-Sitter whose husband was in the military,  and they lived on-base. You have to go in the visitor center and they photograph you,  run your ID and issue a pass for some length of time (mine was a couple weeks).  The lady had to sign for me to make it all legit.  Obviously,  I checked my vehicle before going there to make sure it was void of weird stuff (axes,  machetes,  odd bits of farmer equipment).

so far so good in Salem Heights

I love it up here

4th of July, New Years

shots in the air

I hear them occasionally.  Sound like that travels far though, so it is rarely all THAT close.  Once when I lived in SF there were some LOUD shots in the alley right behind the house.  We waited a safe amount of time and went out and found a gunshot victim.  You can definitely hear the difference between shots on the block and shots 1/4 mile away.  On NYE we sometimes get treated to the sound of the whole city going gun happy for an hour or so.  Stay inside. We also hear it whenever we go camping, which is another thing, just hope everyone is being safe.

Sure but the ghetto bird is more common.

About a month ago the owner of our companies son was drinking in a bar in an upscale drinking district in a wealthy part of town. He is walking out of the bar at the same time a fight is going on across the street at another bar. The two people fighting pull out guns, and He took a bullet in the eye and was killed. A real good kid in his mid 20’s very well liked at the shop, we have a young staff that took it very hard. No charges, the guy that shot him had a permit and was defending himself.

When we were looking for a lot to build we looked at some real nice properties, i was really interested in one that was connected to a big park area.

After doing some research i found out that 'wildlife management area' park  just means the state manages to let people in to kill animals certain times of the year.

We don't get gun shots on a regular basic, occasionally.
