Hackney Diamonds, Rolling Stones, October 2023

New Stones album in October! Finally.

" 'Charlie Watts was my bed. I could lay on there, and I know that not only would I have a good sleep, but I’d wake up and it’d still be rocking” (2021)' Miss you, Charlie"

Today marks the two year anniversary of Charlie's passing.  Keith posted this today on his Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Brilliant guerrilla marketing by the Stones!  Love the album title, and eagerly await hearing the new material, which will include Charlie Watts' last work with the band.

Hoping they do another SNL performance to promote it.  Mick won't have to go running all around the stage on his wobbly knee.  Also hoping his leg heals up and we see a full tour in 2024.

like diamonds, The Rolling Stones are forever...,

Hackney is a supposedly rough and tumble borough of London.  The phrase Hackney Diamonds is local slang for the shards of glass left on the ground after thieves smash out the windows of your car to steal what's inside.

I love the idea of a new stones album

also, artwork looks promising, id like a shirt with that

I like it.  Not anything groundbreaking for the old men but the autotune wasn't that distracting and the guitar licks were pretty clear and tight.   Pretty fun video to watch too!   Glad to see the boys still strutting!

Here they are with Jimmy Fallon at the premier...

nothing but crickets...

I thought it was pretty lame but my good friend thought it was great.  He was also (not surprisingly) was seduced by the woman in the video.

Maybe it will grow on me.

I thought it was fine. In the old days when I listened to radio and had to listen to what other people programed it probably would have grown on me but now I only listen to what I choose so I doubt I will spend very much time with it. The auto tune did surprise me. I just think that is one of those lines in the sand for so many people around my age. I'm trying to be more accepting and not -  knee jerk write off every song with auto tune, but it's not easy.

Their last single (Living in a Ghost Town) was pretty autotuned as well but I got used to it and I still like that song.  Micks voice has metamorphized his whole career, it's part what makes the Stones the Stones.  I'm looking forward to hearing what Stanley Jordan and Andrew Watt bring to the sound.    I liked what Watt did with Ozzy's last couple of albums.

Stanley Jordan with the Stones?? What did I miss?

Now that might be interesting!!!  Of course i meant Steve Jordan, who last I checked, does not use brushes on his tom toms.

Or mallets!

HBD, Mickey.

2nd single dropped today.  The Sweet Sounds of Heaven features Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder in a 7 minute gospel tinged ballad that sounds something like a modern version of a tune off of Exiles.  No video yet.  I like it.

Now that is how you write a song. I just wish all these new Jam bands would pay attention.

Yeah, that's a good one alright, and the coda takes it to a whole 'nuther level. Wonder and Gaga (two words that fit so well together) really make it shine.

I'm kinda surprised to see Keith's credit for playing bass.

Listening to the album now.  So far it's a banger!!!  It should be out soon "officially" in North America soon!!!

Here is the track featuring Paul w/lyrics....

Blues cover band.

Indeed... just like another band we all love

We are still owed a show in Buffalo

New interview with Keith Richards by NPR's Scott Simon. When asked near the end if there's another album in the pipeline, Richards replies "There'll always be another one until we drop."

And a rather good one, wouldn't you say?

Twenty show tour next year, late spring/early summer! Yeah baby! It's only Rock and Roll but I like it!

I've had this disc on almost constant rotation for days now. Great Rolling Stones Album!

I have too.  I love this album.

Lady Gaga on recording Sweet Sounds of Heaven:

I was in the studio at Henson preparing for Joker, leaving to go home for the night and someone said “Mick wants to see you.” I only know one Mick, so I walked down to a studio at the other end of the hall and opened the door. It was a portal to the 70’s. I saw Mick, Keith, Ronnie. Stevie Wonder was there along with all the musicians they were collaborating with. Steve Jordan on the drums. Family & friends hanging out listening on big speakers while Andrew Watt smiled marveling at their unreleased album. We hung out for a bit listening to music and catching up. Mick then asked if I’d hang in the live room while they cut another record. I sat down on the floor, my back against a Rhodes-someone handed me some headphones and eventually a mic. Mick was towering over me smiling saying “go on and do your thing then.” I listened to the music and scribbled furiously trying to learn the tune and then freestyled and sang along..trying not to step on everyone’s toes cuz Andrew had the whole room mic’d the way they did back in the day, and I didn’t want my vocals to bleed into any of the magic they’d been making. The Rhodes was vibrating furiously through my back-Stevie was playing and my whole body was shaking with every note. We played for a few hours and everyone was so excited having me there (this felt so exciting if not slightly insane). I went home not thinking much of it, I loved the song and all the musicians but I thought we were just hangin. Andrew texted me the next day saying Mick wanted to cut the vocals WITH me that night-the way he’d cut them back in the day. Same room, two mics. Single takes. I thought about Mary Clayton…Gimme Shelter…gospel and soul. I thought about my favorite old Stones tunes and all the great vocalists who had sung with Mick, making what we know now as a “sound” unique to a band that defined a huge piece of rock’n’roll. Then we cut it live. Making the “Sweet Sounds of Heaven.” I sang in a way I never really sang before except for with Mick. And Andrew and I both cried-there’s something about witnessing music history and when you get to be a part of it I think that’s exactly what our heaven feels like. It’s just a sweet sound.

spun the vinyl this weekend. Definitely  a strong effort. Worth a respin!
