Happy 73rd birthday to Vince Welnick

Forums:

The dude loved playing keys in the Grateful Dead.

Wasn't the longest-tenured keyboard player by a long shot, but still managed to play several pretty fun shows on his birthday:

40th birthday in 1991 - Chinese New Year Celebration; "Eyes of the World" out of space with Airto

42nd birthday in 1993 - 1st show of the year, a few cobwebs, but three new song debuts and a Dew

44th birthday in 1995 - only "Salt Lake City"; first "Visions of Johanna" since '86; first "I Just Want To Make Love To You" since '84, 4th ever and final performance; one of best shows of '95 IMO

I was at that SLC show.

And people might diss on Vince and his Casio sound.   But during those later years, he was the only one up there looking like he was having fun, always smiling, waiving to the crowd, and rocking funky shirts, while the rest of the band often looked like they wanted to be someplace else.   And that first Phil and Friends show with Vince on grand piano confirms dude had serious chops and showed what might have been if he wasn't stuck with those pre-programed keys.

This might be Vince's first rehearsal with the band....

Agree on all of that Ken. The Berkeley Community Theatre 9-24-94 show was an eye opener...

What could have been....

This was the last GD event that I "slept out" for tickets....Novato, CA Wherehouse Records (long gone of course).

Slept in the van or car, can't remember. Got 5th row center. Good enough to see them clearly.

I wasn't fucking around; they were basically saying this would be an acoustic Dead show....which it almost was.

My first show was 9-24-82, so a wonderful anniversary.

RIP Vince

Was a fun time with Vince in the band.  Enjoyed his playing.   S A M B A in the Rain

Yo Vinnie. Love ya.

Miss you Vince.  Very fond memories of his playing at the Deer Creek run in 1993.
