Happy 80th Jerome John Garcia 8/1/42

Musically, there are other versions that jam harder than this one (The next time in London 9/10/74 is a monster), but vocally this one is so clean & the quiet part in the middle is just stunning, as is Weir's strumming behind the voice.

The quote, or story I should say, was from Wizard the sound man, who was doing acid and working the board, and wandered out of the recording truck to witness the event... To clarify, here is the story: "Late in Truckin' I had put a fresh pack of tape on, so that's smooth. And then I hear a microphone fucking up and realize I have to leave- which you never, ever do. Close and lock the truck, go inside, fix the mike and then I let go [of control]- and they went into Morning Dew, and I can't leave. J.G. looks up and sees me and realizes the truck is empty. I nod, and he smiles! He's playing with his back to to the audience, tears streaming down his face, the music playing the band, and the music recording itself. Ecstasy on every level."

Thank you, Jerry.

Thinking of you, Jerry, and all the love you brought to the world.

If only you were able to celebrate your 80th.

Judit that pic just made me smile... gh HBD Jerry

Me, too, Tom.

I sure hope people aren't wishing me happy birthday long after I'm dead.

Have you made that kind of mark on the world, JR?

I don't wish dead people happy birthday, but I do celebrate people who made a difference in my life.

My wife just said to me, 'my darling, wtf is wrong with you playing Bob on Jerry's birthday' ??

I said,  I know,,, but Eternity has to be played on his b-day, it just does. I can't locate my favorite version from Giants Stadium but this one's pretty good, Richmond 94.

My favorite late era gd song. Vince shines on this. Willie Dixon love lyrics and Bobby jazzy jazz jams. Jerry's holding up the rear.

Happy Birthday and thank you endlessly for showing us what "normal" doesn't look or sound like.

Went to this 30 years ago today. Sure wish that was my plan for tonight.

That picture of Mountain Girl is really sweet, judit. That pic would make a great t-shirt.

Empire State Building tonight.

The Andy Coe Band played a fun show last night at the Blue Moon Tavern in Seattle.  Saxophonist Jessica Lurie sat in for parts of the final set, including fire breathing takes of The Other One and Dupree's Diamond Blues.  Other highlights included a Tennesse Jed with a lengthy dub interlude, and a 20 minute Cumberland Blues with a free jazz/space middle section that was very psychedelic.

They also had their original drummer join them for the whole show.  First time I've seen them with two drummers.  All they lacked was a rhythm guitarist in the Bob Weir role to replicate the 1976-1995 line-up.

I just watched the trailer to the new fan doc. Forcing back tears. Reminds me of how important this subculture is to me.

LING LIVE THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!

THANK YOU JERRY. YOU WERE MUCH MIRE THAN AN ACCEPTABLE MUSICIAN

The picture of the Empire State Building made my day. Thank you

Only time I saw Jerry on his BDAY

8-1-82 Zoo Amphitheater, OKC

I remember  hitching a ride  to the show with a trucker and rolling into the zoo early sunrise to the sounds of the waking animals, it was already hot and muggy...

Great Aiko...

Jerry did play Chinese Bones in 88 at the Rain Forest Benefit with Suzanne Vega, so they did officially cover one of Robyn's songs

“There’s no way to measure his greatness or magnitude as a person or as a player. I don’t think any eulogizing will do him justice. He was that great, much more than a superb musician, with an uncanny ear and dexterity. He’s the very spirit personified of whatever is Muddy River country at its core and screams up into the spheres. He really had no equal. To me he wasn’t only a musician and friend, he was more like a big brother who taught and showed me more than he’ll ever know. There’s a lot of spaces and advances between The Carter Family, Buddy Holly and, say, Ornette Coleman—a lot of universes, but he filled them all without being a member of any school. His playing was moody, awesome, sophisticated, hypnotic and subtle. There’s no way to convey the loss. It just digs down really deep.”

Bob Dylan’s press release regarding the death of Jerry Garcia’s is one of the most poignant, and perceptive pieces I’ve ever read. It always makes me feel the immediacy of Jerry’s passing as if it just happened, and I know that Dylan gets It. In that glorious paragraph, Dylan sketches the essence of Jerry Garcia, the enlightened soul who gave us everything he had.
