Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival

Forums:

I think Emmylou is playing. Maybe the guy from Tremé also.

Hot Tuna.

Gillian Welch is in San Diego 10/3 and LA 10/4....

Thanks for pointing out that Tuna will be there again. Looks like Jack is playing with Peter Rowan on the 7th and Electric Tuna on the 8th

Just saw Jack this past weekend at the Targhee Bluegrass Festival playing with Peter Rowan (Dharma Blues). He also played with Sam Bush and a stage full of people at the end of Sam's set.

Sam was thrilled to have Jack onstage with him and told how he once got "busted" in a high school class for drawing pictures of Jefferson Airplane in his notebook.

Wow Slacker. Do you have innie status somewhere that hinted Emmylou "might' play the festival she's closed nearly every year for like forever? She was one of Warren's favorites. Jeez.

Just checked. HSBF site has no performer info yet.

It's our first time going. How many stages are there?

Emmy Lou closes out the Banjo Stage every yr. She will be there.

Banjo, Arrow, Rooster, Swan, Gold, Porch and Bandwagon. 7 stages.

I have been every yr for a long time. I think 12 yrs.  It can be overwhelming but we are usually quite prepared.

Best festival ever.

Rooster stage is the only one i haven't seen.

I've been to every HSB and played #2 and #7.  We are about to have #17.
One of my good bluegrass jam buds,  Chuck Poling,  is the Rooster Stage MC.

The event was started specifically as an excuse for Emmylou to play in the park (it must be nice to be rich) so I think it's pretty much a given that she'll be there.

But then I think Knot knew that.

Nth Power is insanely good.

Saw them at High Sierra throw down more than 3 huge, potent hours of jammy Earth Wind and Fire songs joined by Skerik on Sax and Jen Hartswick (Trumpet) and Natalie Cressman (Trombone) from Trey Band along side there very fine and funky trumpeter.    The leader of this group sings like Maurice White and can shred heavily on guitar.

holy fucking shit, that is going to be incredible...everything ribot touches is gold...although i will be missing mary halvorson on this set!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibE1C0EWoBY

hoping ribot would not fly out to CA just for a special guest spot in a free festival set...bay area needs more ceramic dog, or finally a young philadelphians set, since tacuma is in town and playing in the prime time set already. we need some young philadelphians in a good sf/east bay venue!

Please let me know when that happens, Daylight.  I've been hoping to catch Ribot for awhile.

iz haz want go?

Hotel rates are high but you bring your shit every day.

My mom canceled her hotel in SF and is staying with us.

Horribly weak lineup for HSBF.  Warren must be pissed somewhere.

John Prine, Emmy Lou, Dave Alvin, Hot Tuna, Gillian, Sturgil Simpson(looking forward to finally seeing him) and a bunch of filler.

Cheap trick? Give me a break.

If MarkD doesn't like it, then it's no good.

Cheap Trick ain't no Achilles Wheel.

You know likey - you get full refund at place of purchase!

Check out Lukas Nelson and  Brothers Comatose, Mark.

I've never heard of many of the bands or seen some of the better known performers live, and expect to be pleasantly surprised. One year we showed up at the Star Stage and the opening act at 11 am was this band 'Trombone Shorty' that nobody in SF had ever heard of..kicked ass. expand your horizons and go see some newbies..

but yeah, slim pickings  at first glance this year.

And don't forget that the jets will be flying all afternoon for Fleet Week.

I would love to stop by on Sunday, if possible.

Enjoy!

Gurf Morlix just played a show I produced up here in AK.  He wasn't very friendly but he sounded pretty good. During sound check he was getting annoyed with me and my sound guy.  I mentioned twice we were volunteers. He finally got nice when I told him I liked his set.  My wife, who didn't know about the sound check, said "I don't like that guy". Ha ha.  Wish I was going to the festival!

This sounds interesting -

Lampedusa featuring Steve Earle, Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, Lucinda Williams, Jade Jackson

John Lennon w/Rick Neilson & Bun E Carlos & Tony Levin "I'm losing You"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVfOiA-QiYw

I read that John loved the sound with Rick & Bun E and had wished he had recorded the album with them.

Are Jello Biafra and Henry Rollins doing Spoken Word or Music sets?  Hopefully, Jello busts out "Rawhide".

>Warren must be pissed somewhere.

Can only hope. Lineup ain't weak at all, it just is getting more inclusive. I mean, Seun Kuti? Bob Mould?? Prime Time band???

BRING IT

Yeah, as I'm checking out some of the bands on YouTube it's pretty clear that there are some stellar acts lined up. Giddy UP!

lineups have been declining since warren passed, but ornettes prime time band with ribot is going to CRUSH IT. fleck/washburn is also going to be pretty killer.

There is a good act to be seen from start to finish on Saturday.

It likely won't happen but if I was there at 11:00am I'd go with Reed Mathis, Poncho Sanchez, Peter Rowan, Allison Brown, a break or Gillian Welch (or both) Robert Earl Keen then Sturgill.

And that all connects, you just have to be light on your feet.

I honestly like the first half of that day more than the second. Since I always end up getting there later I wish they were reversed. But REK is always fun in Marx Meadow and it would be good to see Sturgill in that setting.

banjo all day saturday, fleck, brown, and earle are always all great, sunday ill get a good spot for prime time and then head over to emmylou...i have never seen her set in all my years at hsbg, there is always something else id rather see, but this year im not seeing much im exited about closing out the fest

and idk what the jello sets will be like, but this is the "La Victrola Platform"; https://lavictrola.org/about/

not sure how it will be utilized, but it looks pretty sweet

and im probably going to have to catch randy newmann

If I were there I'd probably have to catch Randy Newman, too. Seems like a lot of good > great choices throughout.

The most Banjo-centric fest ever. Almost everyone I want to see is at the main stage this yr.

Chuck Prophet on Friday and Sturgil Simpson on Sat.  Maybe start Saturday with Reed Mathis. Randy Newman on Sunday is tempting, but up against Hot Tuna and Dave Alvin at Banjo.  John Prine and Emmylou to close it out.

Usually I am all over the place, but not this yr. Dave Alvin and John Prine are at Banjo. I usually travel for them and many others. Not this yr.

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 was awesome. Caught the second half of First Aid Kit.

We also got a half hour of Blue Angels practice while driving over the bridge.

Seun Kuti was incredible and T-Bone Burnett did a very experimental set with a drummer and synthesizer player as he rapped/spoke a la Kesey over their weirdness. I thought it was a very nice surprise

Nice ! Rowan and Casady

Was a groovy weekend for sure. Great to meet you Slik. Glad you hung out. I think my first day ever to stay at one stage all day.  Was awesome.

Was a bitch getting home today but considering what others are going thru.....

Home safe but a lot of smoke. I can see the Sulfur fire across the lake.  Internet is out and might be for awhile. I think it might have burned down.  I can spot check internet using my phone hotspot but will use sparingly. Facebook is out until furthur notice.

I'm at Banjo most of the time, Mark, but had to see Randy Newman at Swan. Great show. Very respectful and quiet audience, especially for that sized crowd.

Saw Brandi Carlilie there and a touch of Lukas Nelson, but I've seen him a bunch and wanted to catch Dave Alvin in between at Banjo.

A real nice guy named Barry from Palm Desert shared his tarp space with me over at Swan.

Said "Hey" to Tim O'Brien walking on the way over to Swan. He and some folks I know in SLC are friends.

Thanks again, Mark. Good luck to you and Mully and all affected by this fire. BTW, anybody come up with a cause yet?

Was a trip walking along the path from Swan Stage to  Tower of Gold Stage as Robert Earl Keen was singing Casey Jones and passing a Cop who was singing along to Casey Jones, grinning ear to ear.

Anybody else see any Dead Songs played at HSB this year?

At the -46 minute mark in the Robert Earl Keen stream there is a fat and pronounced China Cat Sunflower riff that starts All My Precious Time - the riff gets interlaced into that song and it sounds very cool.

Clearly - lead guitarist is Garcia -influenced.

And his bass player sang Casey Jones.

Clearly I missed a good time - the song after All My Precious Time: I Know You Rider....

Yeah, that was a great set, the china cat sammie was sweet. I couldn't see who was singing Casey Jones - other than the Cop...so thanks for the correction. Jamie Johnson band covered  a nice Friend of the Devil on that stage earlier.  Actually, really liked all of the songs that band covered. Had the most fun dancing with family to Ozomatli at Swan stage though. If you happen to watch the web cast, we're the crew with the dancing ribbons. My two year old niece is the bomb!

Had a great time checking out sets in the park before going to other Bay Area shows on Saturday an Sunday.

1st time experiencing this fest in person so big thanks to all the zoners vets i encountered for their kindness; truly u r the real HSBG all stars.

Yeah, they sure came through for me too, Furious. Nice to meet you. Had a great seat for Sunday, as you'll see, thanks to them hospitable boys.

Some HSBF memories.

Billy Bragg on Friday. First time seeing him.

DSC_0035 (426x640).jpg

Singing "Power In The Union", if I remember correctly.

DSC_0041 (426x640).jpg

Brandi and the twins were great. Second time seeing her. First was at Targhee Fest in 2016, and she had a love affair with the audience there also.

DSC_0064 (426x640).jpg

DSC_0071 (426x640).jpg

David and Gillian slayed again. Masters at their craft. Amazing to see them hold so many spellbound playing this type of quieter folk music.

Only thing that would've made it better would have been a "Cortez The Killer" from David.

 DSC_0085 (640x426).jpg

Steve Earle. Only hung around for half of his set to go see the end of Sturgill Simpson.

DSC_0092 (640x426).jpg

Thanks to a nice hairstylist from Palm Desert named Barry, I was able to get a space on a close up tarp for Randy Newman, who didn't stream.

Great show. And the audience was so respectful and very quiet for the touching ballads when they came.

DSC_0100 (426x640).jpg

Thanks to Mark and GaryFish and Mully, I had a great seat for John Prine and Emmylou Harris.

DSC_0109 (426x640).jpg

Great to see Jon Randall again. He's on the left. Played with Emmylou and the Nash Ramblers before playing in Sam Bush's band. He went off to win grammy's for songwriting ("Whiskey Lullabye"?).

My ears perked as I recognized his voice and playing. GREAT vocalist. Sam's band has never been as good since he left, IMHO.

Check out a show I recorded a SBD of from 3-01-03 (I think) which was Jon's last show with Sam. Great show and recording. It's up on the download sites.
