A new documentary, featuring rarely-seen footage, captures the magic of a 1969 music festival held at Mount Morris Park in Harlem, attended by 300,000 people. The festival had long been forgotten in the shadow of that other New York music festival, Woodstock. Contributor Hua Hsu talks with "Summer of Soul" director Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, bandleader of The Roots, about reviving the legacy of the Harlem Cultural Festival, which featured such stars as Sly and the Family Stone and Stevie Wonder.

I got goosebumps when Mahalia
I got goosebumps when Mahalia Jackson and Mavis Staples sang together. Gladys Knight was fantastic, and the list goes on...top 5 music documentary/live show of all time. Absolutely phenomenal music and the background players were funky as fuck. Would rather have been there than Woodstock.
How about the tall, dark and handsome dude (forgot his name), who sang "Heard it through the grapevine". Holy fuck was that awesome!

Great documentary, so-so
Great documentary, so-so concert film. I realize there was only so much time for the film say its piece and showing all and complete filmed performances from that festival in would not be practical, but when they release this on bluray, they should include a disc (or discs) of complete performances and outtakes, like the Monterey Pop box set did. There is so much gold here, it really deserves a full exposure.
