has anyone been to the GD archives at UC santa cruz?

Forums:

curious if any zoners have ever been there or requested to see any materials. not even sure if thats possible for an average joe who is not a student or academic. i found a few references to an interview of jerry garcia conducted by john zorn that is held by the archive at UCSC.

the archive was given this interview 10 years ago, yet it remains totally inaccessible - as far as i can tell, no public copies exist. going to contact micheal bryant of KZSC radio, mentioned in the fb post as the person who gave them the interview, maybe he has a recording that could be listened to, but if not, im feeling like it might finally be time to consider a trip down there to try and listen to it.

have any zoners tried to do something like this? anyone know whether or not this reel might be publicly accessible or not? honestly not even sure if they would have the equipment to play it available for use or not...might have to find my own equipment to bring, although im not even sure what i would need to play a 7in reel thru headphones(i assume id be in a library like setting).

anyone have any kind of info on whether or not this will be feasible?

The foks who run the Jerrybase.com site seem to have been there a number of times.  Might try reaching out via twitter (https://twitter.com/InstituteJerry) or via email ([email protected]) to ask them what they know.

I was there shortly after it opened and was surprised to see something we "made" exhibited in their display case:  At Jerry's memorial concert I brought some large sheets of psychedelic looking holographic foil (it was kinda unique back then, now it's everywhere) and a bunch of markers. We asked anyone walking by to write a note. By the end of the day, there were hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of messages on the front and backs of the colorful shiny "paper." They were like giant postcards to Jerry.

The funny thing is, I still have what I thought was all of them right here in my basement. Somehow, some of them ended up there.

I will try to unroll them and post some pics.

One of the reasons my wife dropped out of high school was because she was going to too many shows. When she went to graduate from UC Santa Cruz her advisor told her she needed one more elective to graduate. The only thing that worked with her schedule was Music of the Grateful Dead taught by the guy who is now the curator. Full circle.

Well it's closed on Saturdays... just tried to go there last weekend w/ a friend from Portland.
But I did visit years ago and found it interesting... but the exhibit room that's open to the public is on the small side.
combined w/ a visit to the UC SC arboretum/ botanical garden, it's a worthwhile effort.
