Hawaii help PLZ

Forums:

Hey zoners!! My GF and I are coming into San Fran Feb 7th for a few days before heading out to the big island for 8 days. Hopefully hitting up the NMA show the 10th!!  We are lucky enough to have a free place to stay but it had to be in Honolulu, Waikiki Beach area. Was hoping people here could give me some great places to eat, hang out etc.. OUr first time in Hawaii BTW  Thanks everyone

Cool you got free housing, but there is a lot more to Oahu than Honolulu.   Get out if the city if you can and check out the stretch between Kahana Bay and the North Shore.  Very green and uncrowded.   For snorkeling, there are some great reefs right off shore at the end of the road on the leeward side of the island.

My buddy Michael Riley usually plays on Friday nights in Pahoa

https://www.best-of-oahu.com/lulumahu-falls.html never been, but I've hiked in bamboo forests before and it's a pretty cool experience... this hike is only 2ish miles.

https://hanaumabaystatepark.com/  wear good water sandals for the trek, but very worth it if you want to snorkel.

Feb 7th and 8th are the last nights of Bill Laswell's residency at the Chapel in SF. these will be very uncommon, legendary shows with a handful of zoners likely in attendance. highly, highly recommended.

if you are looking for SF eats lmk what kind of restaurants are you looking for and in what price range? willing to wait in line for super dank food? there are so many good spots its tough to just start rattling off recommendations without parameters.

If you are "heading out to the big island", you won't be staying in Honolulu.  If you are, then you are on Oahu, not "the big island" (that one is called Hawaii).

We are staying at the the royal garden in waikiki, so yeah Oahu.. I have never ever been to hawaii and no nothing about the islands...sorry. Larry that Bill Laswell shows are on my radar, thank you!! Lee Scratch Perry at TXR as well!  Noodler is Pahoa round where we will be at??

^^ figured it out Noodler.. whats up with Kailua, its only 25 mins from the hotel?? Thats where Billy has his boat, right?? id love to do some fishing, but all im seeing is 500$ for a few hrs.. FML lol. willing to wait for a killer meal yes, but also we are really into hole in the wall places to eat off the beaten path, worth the adventure! Im a French trained chef so bring it on!!  I booked a few day excursion things, snorkeling, Diamond Head hike, and Pearl Harbor tour, the museum they have looks pretty epic and figured i pay my respects. ANY AND ALL INFO, IDEAS WOULD BE HELPFULL THANKS EVERYONE!!!!yes

If you do make it up to the North Shore area, check out the food trucks, especially those serving the world famous Kahuku shrimp.

1-Be deferential to native culture and you'll find people are really kind.

2-Wash your produce REALLY well. There's a thing called rat lung worm and it has the potential to mess you up seriously.

3-Fire ants - you'll see. ..

4-Remember to adopt "Island time"

When you get to Pearl Harbor, go out to the Arizona first thing. Then do the museum. When the water gets rough, they cancel the boats out.  I spent a couple hours in the museum first, and they canceled the boat out while I was in line to board.

Get out of Waikiki as soon as possible.  North Shore is awesome. I enjoyed the road around the island much more than the big shitty, I mean city.

Pahoa is also on Big Island of Hawaii. You should go there next trip.

love your tips, Highnote!

>>>>whats up with Kailua

fucking amazing beach.....take the long route along the coast on the way there or back.

Find a genuine Hawaiian person and tell him to entertain you. They owe the tourists.

If you do that loop, you will pass by Magnum PI's place south of Waimanalo (you can barely see his house near the beach in the center of the picture):

The loop back to the city also takes you right past Hanauma Bay State Park (mentioned above) which has good snorkeling and is very popular with bus loads of Japanese tourists.   The best snorkeling at Hanauma is right past the reef.  However, watch the tides.  At low tide, there are only a few slots you can navigate over the reef to get back to the beach.   And if the tide is going out, the paddle back in can be a real workout.

Sounds like you have already booked some snorkeling, but no need for expensive group trips.   If you can get to the western tip of the island, there is outstanding snorkeling away from the crowds right off shore:

Hanauma Bay State Park is one of the best places on earth.  Diamond Head, Kailua Beach, North Shore and Pearl Harbor are the of the best places on Oahu. I believe the Arizona is closed due to structural issues.

Food: Teddy's Bigger Burgers on three sides of the Island (Shakes are amazing too), Nico's Seafood in Honolulu, Bowles Burrito in Kailua (live music at night),  Wailana Coffee House is a 1970's diner in Waikiki across from Hilton. All casual and reasonably priced. Check their websites.

>>>I believe the Arizona is closed due to structural issues.

It was closed in June....website says reopens at the end of March 2019.   That's a long time.
