Watching a classic parade with the kids this morning.

&

Long live Betty White!

Is that in San Francisco?

I wish SF had a killer parade to take the kids too.

Is that a cultural parade?

philly

and fuck the mummers.

Are those Mardi Gras Indians?

The mummers are a New Years Day tradition!

I grew up attending these events as a youth.

The rents would drive us rats up to the city to freeze our ass's off at 4am so we could line the city streets til the event started.

Love just watching on TV these days.

One year before I die, im flying to Philly with a 10 strip and gonna watch the parade the way it's meant to be SEEN!

What did you do on that other board? Why did you get a warning over there?

Cpl friends of mine down in philly today for second year in a row...hoping we all go next year az i had already made plans for today when they asked me to join them for year 2 at parade...

Hello old friends....first tune i listed on recent "clapton favorites" thread...;)

Dawn patrol.....watched the sun rise and caught a few on the beach this morning. It was so fun we will do it again tomorrow.

Good morning peeps. Watching the last Bucs game and waiting for the caldo gallego I made yesterday to warm up.

Totally unfamiliar with mummers. It sounds like Mardi Gras' red headed stepchild.

Clowns gettin' down.

Mummer's Parades pre-date Mardi Gras.

Been around for 117 years. Theirs is a rich and colorful history.

LLTM!

I wonder why everyone goes to Mardi Gras instead of the og parade. Better weather?

Has Phish ever played Philly for New Years?

Phish did a NYE run in 96' but no actual NYE show

A New Years Philly Phish run would phanphuckingtastic!

East Coast New Years are cold. Brrrrrrrr. sad

2017 will be great? For whom?

"Shouting crowds and mummer's shrouds
And people going crazy
Always said what was in their heads
It surely was amazing
I had my fun in the bull ring
And never got a scar
It really wasn't hard
To be a star"

Is this the same parade where people show up in black face?

Black face is religious.

>>Is this the same parade where people show up in black face?

Dressed sequins and feathers. Folks also consume copious amounts of alcohol and there is lots of public urination. It's sort of a mess.

The one and only Mummers Parade I saw (early 80s) featured a large number (100?  1,000?) of banjo players.

Is that a staple?  Was it one-time thing?

Wrong guy slacker.

The mummers parade is the worst annual event that Philly has running at the moment.

Folks also consume copious amounts of alcohol and there is lots of public urination. It's sort of a mess.< Damn straight.

it's pretty awful. just a bunch of bros drunk as fuck, littering and yelling.

super philly. annoying and inconvenient.

Tim, Great shot.  What were you guys Surf-Casting for?

its a crazy messed up BIG tradition. I respect it but I just never got it. They have social clubs that take it waaaaaay serious. some spend thousands on their costumes. And booze. And family and friends. and banjos, maybe a little black face, umbrellas, and just the craziest thing. Hangovers and 'oh those golden slippers'-ouch. I put it on for some kids that never saw it and they were fascinated, glued even. Something there, but I dont get it. Still, i always seem to watch a few minutes each year.

oh and have a Happy New Year! what is your resolution?

Happy 2017!!! 2016 was a pretty good year for me (1st in a long time!).. here's hoping 2017 is too!

Nothing like experiencing it LIVE....the color, the string bands, the glitter and sparkle, and Ohhhh, the Philly ;) Been going for many years and I have family in a few clubs also, since they moved the fancy brigades inside to the convention center it just isn't the same for me ! But my fav memories are of the colorful string bands marching past me while i'm sipping hot chocolate.

 I will take a 100 banjo's...anyday :).

Id love to see the mummers parade! Except it is in philly on new years day. Do inconvenient

We have our pirate fest in feb. More springlike. More guns, less banjo.

my dream parade is the New Year's Day Flower One who's name escapes me at the moment.

for the Orange Bowl. where every float must be made from living materials

I'm so over Philly in most forms, crowds in all forms

The Rose Parade for the Rose Bowl? I saw it once when I was about 7 - it was a much smaller parade and simpler, but I think they made the floats of real natural materials even then. I don't know. It was exciting to be there, for sure.

You're thinking of the Tulip Bowl, Jill.

yes, Judit!!!!!

(((((((RoseParade))))))

the nature of it has always thrilled me

it must have been amazing even as a simpler event

super philly. annoying and inconvenient. <<<<

THIS. I grew up near Philly and it is a complete mess. And, cold.
