Hey Hey it's first of May!

Forums:

International Worker's Day. I've been in Europe a couple of times on May Day. I was in Orvieto, Italy once when there was a deeply felt parade with speeches in the square at the end. Mostly older guys. It was beautiful in its wrinkly, twinkling eyes way. People were serious about honoring workers.

Hey Hey it's First of May, outdoor fucking starts today! I saw this as a slogan for the first time in Amsterdam, as graffiti near Vondelpark. It was a revelation to see it on a wall, much enjoyed.

May Day was a sweet day where I live when the little kids in the neighborhood brought their hand-picked flowers in handmade paper holders or other simple containers that they hung on the front door or put on the porch. Always anonymously. Very sweet, indeed.

Happy Birthday, Charley!

Do they still have May Day dancing at (elementary) schools? When I was a kid the L.A. public schools had dancing on the playgrounds. We practiced in the week leading up the the 1st and each class would do its dance on the Day. I went to one very large school where there were what felt like many classes doing their unique dances all next to each other. I remember we were all dressed up sunflowers, with paper flower petals circling our faces, something the boys weren't happy about. One time another class had real Model T's or some kind of antique cars moving in a synchronized pattern while the class sang a song that everyone recognized - it seems really silly when I think about it now. Imagine many groups of elementary kids dancing or running around on a huge playground - chaotic patterns all at once.

And do they have Maypoles? That dance of weaving ribbons was fun to make the pattern appear, and beautiful when I started to appreciate it. I went to a Waldorf school in 8th and 9th grades and the little kids looked pretty cute weaving the ribbons. As a school with European origins I'm sure they told us lots of old stories and lore, but I didn't care nor pay much attention. Even if I had, would I remember now?

I remember doing the maypole thing. Vaguely.

Fishcane, that's just a great shot. Those joyful bright eyes, with a big future in front of her. Happy Birthday, Charley.

Thanks!! She had a great day

Yay Charley!
