Hey Zoner Grandfathers .... what do they call you???

Forums:

Opened up a card on Christmas morning to find a an ultrasound image of my first grandchild.

SO many issue of greater import, but my fam wants to know how I will be addressed (by an infant who won't talk for a while).

Me? I figure that I have time. But that's not flying round here ....

I know that I am not fond of 'Grandpa'

I have a JazzHead buddy who goes by 'Pops' - inspired by Louis Armstrong. Very cool.

I love old jazz, but I wuz thinking of something more relevant in my world......

perhaps that I grow out the beard and that she should call me 'Jerry''

Zoners - what are your third generation official titles?

I'm a Papaw. Congratulations, Nod.

Congrats, Nod!

I called my grandpas "abuelito" (Spanish) or "avi" (Catalan) but never got to meet the Catalan one in person.

Enjoy the wait!

Thank you, both. Been quite a wait already ..... 38 & 39 years old.

The kid will be fine - Daddy saw GD at Brendan Byrne when he was 7 - I had tix and Lisa had to work.

Tease him that he fell asleep during Watchtower that night. It was such a sweet night .... every balloon and kindness was sent his way.

I'm DZIA DZIA ... or as my granddaughter says Ja ja

Congratulations That is life

TommyGutt ..... your strategy of complex phonetic concepts is much appreciated. You open doors

If my own 'Jerry' had prepared me in the same way - how much more would I have been open to learn?

It is the beauty of children, of life itself .... that DZIA > ja ja represents

So it is with the seed of the flower to the coming Spring

Congratulations, Lisa and Don.

I'm grandma because that's what we called my grandmother, and she was swell.

When I asked Greg what he wanted to be called, he said, "The Gregory".

My son is blessing us with our first one (a boy) and he will be here in May. I'm going to be a Deda (Croatian) formal is Djed. My wife is gonna be a Noni (Italian). Praying for my daughter and son-in-law who have been trying but having difficulties.

my son and his friends have been calling me Pops all my life so that one was out

congrats, Don

Congratulations, Don and Congratulations, fabes.

My granddaughter is 5, my grandson is almost 3.  My mother used to call her grandparents, Nona and Popo. Since Popo rhymes with Joe, that's what they call me.

The name you're looking for will present itself when it is ready, and you'll know in the moment.

Love to All all my fellow "oldsters".. lol.

>>>Deda<<<

That's what we called my Croatian grandfather.

Not being a parent I have no thoughts on this question except that I'm betting you'll be happy with whatever they end up calling you, as long as they call you it often.

Being a grandparent is a hell of a thing, congratulations.

Hey, my Croatian brother.

my Croatian grandfather came here and worked in the steel mills, wife passed when he was young, lived on the edge of the city with a couple acre garden he worked by hand. He never spoke English, signed his name with an x,  the only things I ever seen him drink were  beer and whiskey, strong like Ox, great cook and listened to the Cleveland Indians and Browns on the am radio. Me and my Dad would go see him weekly and bring him cases of Rolling Rock, dad would take him shopping, while I hung out at the house with my BB gun. He bet on sport thru my dad, and, yes, I called him Deda. Deda was initially recommended by sister, and I'm alright with that.

Lovin' this ......

Congratulations! Being a grandfather, that's where it's REALLY at.

My daughter's three kids all call me "Grandpa Dave."

My fourth grandchild started calling me "Grandpa" as soon as she learned to talk. When she turned 13 she changed it to "Gramps."

Bottom line, they are going to call you what they want to call you, and it's all good!

Well...she doesn't speak yet.  We will talk about it a little later.

She will also speak Russian, so she might work in that angle.

Congrats.

Try your Zoner name: Donster

Or if that's too tough to pronounce: NodNod

No grands yet but when they come - I'll be Zanpa or Zandaddy.   :)

Voodoo Chile ... your post reminds me of what Stephen Gaskin said (Ina May birthed my son at The Farm)  about babies being intelligent beings who just can't speak yet - Don't do anything too gross in front of them.

I always heeded that advice. Had to step out of the room once or twice over the years.

>>>Hey, my Croatian brother<<

Zdravo!

My grandfather came here in the 1920s, worked for the railroads and settled in San Francisco. He brought my father over from the island of Korčula in 1930, something my father was none too happy about. 35 years later their relationship remained icy.

The thing I remember most about Deda is that he made his own wine, always had a barrel of it in his basement and drank it constantly. I think I would have gotten along with him fine if I'd known him longer.

Fun history thread. Just think all you grandfolks, in 30+ years your grandkids will be telling your stories.

And that's far out.

My grandkids' other beloved grandmother is their Nonni.

Too bad they never got to call Greg The Gregory.

Grandpa BooBoo

Jamspace .... inspired by the Flintstones :->   "Hey BooBoo"

They call me Lolo.  Congrats Nod!

Congratulations!

Our granddaughters call Michel (Hippomon) Saba, which is grandpa in Hebrew. I'm Lala, the little one's early pronunciation of Laura. It stuck.

>>>> Just think all you grandfolks, in 30+ years your grandkids will be telling your stories.

"My popo grew marijuana and served ayahuasca. He was always happy"

Lol

^^^
Nah Nod

The nickname was given to me by my twin stepdaughters before I married their mom. The story is, my wife asked me if it was ok if the girls called me a nickname. I asked "What is it?" She said they want to call you BooBoo, (because of my numerous sports and clumsy injuries). I responded "Well at least it isn't Shithead." And thus the nickname was born. When my granddaughter was born, they asked what I would like to be called and I said "Why Grandpa BooBoo of course!"

Congrats Nod

Hopefully not ODB, or worse, G-Diddy.

PaPa

Timely thread. My first grandkid is due in May. In my mind I'm way too young to be a grandparent, so I'm thinking Uncle Brian.

Some great posts here ..... thinking of growing my beard and being called "Jerry"   :->

I remember another grandpa nickname from Spain -- Sounds like YaYo from grandpa and YaYa for grandma
