Honest Wolf Bros Feedback

Forums:

What do we think? I've only watched a lil pro shot video that I found on YouTube and I'm not impressed. However, I'll probably go to their upcoming show and I'll probably have a good time. It's definitely a finger in the air show for me. Unlike the far-off JRAD and next months Circles Around the Sun shows I gladly purchased tix for as soon as they went on sale. Thoughts? Prayers?

My thoughts are that you should go see many many more Dead cover bands

That shit is rough.  Watched the webcast last night.  Even for free, it's a big meh.

Oakdale show was fantastic.

The one after that was better.

The next one better still.

Keep rolling that stone Bob !

I dozed off during the Portland show. It was the same venue as the annual Nutcracker ballet, which also puts me to sleep.

B4 I start, I’m not a big fan.

I entered the ticket lottery, but was not at all disappointed when I wasn’t chosen.

That said, I was pleasantly surprised by the early shoe.

As for the late shoe, it served as a reminder of why I’m not a Bob-O-Phile

ymmv

I really enjoyed the Wallingford show

They put out a lot of sound for a 3 piece

They seemed to respond to the energy in the room

Maybe the “meh” shows you’ve seen are a result of either the lack of honest excitement in the room or your own over expectations.

“it’s only Rock n Roll”

>>>>>it’s only Rock n Roll

Is it though?

Yeah it is!

Fake fucking 21st century hippies! With your demands and your expectations, stay on Pink fuckin tour or U2 your choice , I don’t give a shit.

Okay, and you just keep blindly lapping up any dreck Bob Weir shits out on stage.  What I watched of yesterday’s stream was terrible.  They aborted the worst Fever I’ve ever heard (and I’ve seen Ratdog play some clunkers) to go into a botched Easy To Slip.  That was all I could really take.  Did they actually make it through an entire song without Bob screwing part of it up and telling the band to do that part again?

We're hitting the last one in SC, lookin' forward to it.

Also enjoyed Wallingford.  Would be interested in seeing D. Was sitting in on a D&C show or three.  More of a flow this tour than last.

I never realized that ones feeling about Bob & Wolf is a reflection about what kind of hippy one is.

Like who knew? I wasn’t in attendance at the acid tests, but my guess is that if I was there, I would have failed.

If we accept that music evaluation is a subjective process, then if people enjoy something, by all means go, have fun,

perhaps even dance some.

>>>>>perhaps even dance some.

There wasn’t any dancing going on at last nights show.

does vaping dmt help?

Couldn’t hurt

I've seen the band 3 times and have a 4th upcoming. Admittedly I'm a Bobby homer, and while there's going to be some clunkers in the setlist (Cheezy Answers, Eternity, etc.), the good easily outweighs the bad. It's never going to sound as good on a stream or on a Youtube video. Although the WRS > Let It Grow > Eyes I watched was pretty sweet.

I'd definitely recommend em. Long live Bobby fucking Weir.

If you want to go to a Bobby or any other show, you should go

If you don’t want to go to said show, stay away

If you go to a concert the proper thing to do is to listen to the music the artist is performing

If you enjoy said music you may Sing, Clap, Dance and applaud at appropriate times

If you don’t enjoy said music you can leave.

Jerry ain’t coming back folks, this ain’t Ratdog Tour, it’s a Bobby project that he’s happy enough with to take on tour.

If you truly Want to go (and leave your expectations at home) when 71 year old Bobby brings this 3 piece to your town, you have a good chance at enjoying your night.  IMHO

Some venues can sound like shit especially if it's full of talkers. Those shows probably sound better from a sbd stream.

into a botched Easy To Slip<<<

...  thought there was a miscue, but it was easily overshadowed by overall feel and reunited presence of KB

Really like this new "space" that bobby has put together ... especially if it's where he feels he needs to be

At this stage of the game, I'll take what I can get ... even if it means the odds of them being "on it" on any given night isn't what it used to be.

I saw them in L.A. and Boston last fall, had a lot of fun at both.

>>>>>>thought there was a miscue

He started singing the verse, forgot the words, bailed, and said start the verse over.  And then the verse was musically weak because Was and KB were on one page while above and Jay Lane were on another.

>>>>>>I saw them in L.A. and Boston last fall, had a lot of fun at both

Yeah.  Concerts are fun.  I’d have fun too if I went.  Doesn’t always mean the music is good though.

Take Dead & Co for example.

>>>Yeah.  Concerts are fun.  I’d have fun too if I went.  Doesn’t always mean the music is good though.

I had fun because I thought the music was good. I don't usually bother to listen to things I don't enjoy.

Was working at the same time, so really just noticed that something was "off" ... but then got back on track.

Personally, this sort of thing is not a deal breaker for me if they rebound ... which I believe they did in so far as subsequent interplay

That Fever didn't "rebound"

That was a terrible listen.  Glad I wasn't there.  Hope things pick up.

Sounds like the reason I watch wrestling: I know it's going to suck but there's a chance of something awesome happening.

Btw, it's sxsw. I might end up catching a random show this week.

what happened to the bob+phil duo?

that was interesting.

but i have been musically all done with bob projects since 1989.

I'm a 'live and let people live' kind of person. You do you, I'll do me.

I love the Grateful Dead catalog, and was a bobby fan when I first became a deadhead. I'll be honest, I'm shocked people are paying what they are to attend both D&C and Bobby and the Wolf Brothers. That's fine-you do you.

Music is subjective, and you can like it all you like, but others can critique it, and that's ok.  Bobby and Wolf brothers is the weakest lineup he's ever played in. It's like 1995 Ratdog except worse. At least that was a novelty then. I feel sad that Bob doesn't notice it, or doesn't care. I feel sad people flock to it now, but when he had a much stronger band, like Ratdog in 2000-2001, the crowds were far more sparse.

Then again, I've seen Bobby show up to shows and rehearse, badly, during the concert performance, which is a dick move. I'm not a kill joy-if you've got the funds to spend and you want to have a good time, enjoy it.

I will say this-I saw Richard Thompson a few months ago. He didn't stink. He ripped it up. So did his band. Also, I saw the Canadian band "The Sadies" the other day. My goodness, they lit that place up on fire. Every person was grooving.

I last saw Bobby in 2016. I think I'll end it there unless something beyond compelling comes my way. Don't get me started on Phil's current band.

Ugh, Just not for me ...:(

On that note I'm gearing up for 6 Widespread Panic shows in the next 2 wks, some old time zoners from afar and nearby will be attending to add to the wonderful energy of some fantastic music !!  I don't get why more folks  aren't into Panic, they really make me feel great, kinda like I did way back in 1974 when a certain other band turned me on for the first time...;)

I am giving out cookies...

Bobby shows are always hit or miss. I really like some of the recent studio work I’ve heard. Last time I saw him Play with Phil it sucked, IMO. But some folks raved about it.

If my parents could bribe me into a really good college I would drop out to tour with Bobby.

>I don't get why more folks  aren't into Panic<

they suck?

Turtle made me laugh.

Thanks Turtle.

they suck? >>>

wow, really ?  What about them don't you like ?

Just curious, but I get the whole different strokes thing .

I forget,  Do you like Dead and Co Turtle ?

Why is that funny lumbertruck ?

The note eater looks like an inbred cousin of hatchet man from ICP.

sorry, no i do not like dead and co.

i find wsp vocals god awful and the jam in my face thing gets old quick.

they just don't do anything for me.

do they have any actually good songs? like with lyrics or moving instrumentals?

Man, I don't think I can bring myself to go.

oh? i thought it was a icp thing.

they are at least interesting. not my thing mind you....but.

If you're addressing me, Lyn, I'm not Lumbertruck.

Anyway, I agree with what Turtle said above.

I saw them at the Greek and it "didn't take."

Different strokes, indeed.

wow, really ?  What about them don't you like ?>>

Gotta concur. I did a few WSP shows in 2001 when I needed to on my days off. No doubt, talented musicians. But then, and probably now, different scene. Like southern frat kids and phish ghetto punks. The music-I just don't dig the vocals, the bongos, and in general, I don't like the songs.

To each their own.

i mean its fine. they play "hard".

singer sounds like he gargles glass shards.

On the plus side, T-Ham's vocals are worse than J-Bell's.

I like them okay.

At one concert, the dude next to us kept trying to take his shorts off and get naked.

Ben's thread has devolved into a WSP thread.  Good job, Fiddlyn.

>>>>At one concert, the dude next to us kept trying to take his shorts off and get naked.

Sorry about that.

Sarah, If you can do better...it's a challenge ...dear ;)  I see your still the same smartass you have always been...lol !

Turtle, I didn't get them till I saw them live really, I had same problem with understanding JB, but now that I have been to a lot of shows and know the lyrics I find that the Vic Chesnutt tunes are the ones I really enjoy. Def need to experience them live to feel the whole experience, also the fans are just so friendly and the "asshole" factor Is not as strong as I have found with other bands. They just move me, get me up and moving and make me smile...that's what it's all about for most of us tho.

This my fav song...

Localcounty, Sorry I thought you were the same moniker I had seen before a lumbertruck one, sorry again for confusion.  I get it, I don't like Phish or ANYTHING  Bobby and folks look at me like I have 3 heads...lol !   Really missing the PLF, DNB ( on East coast), and some other top favs of days gone by, but groovin to a lot of local really good Prog rock kids I happened upon here in Jersey...:)

lol...Well now, that wasn't too much of a challenge....;)

Ohh well, I don't come around much anymore, I was just thinking about all the old school zoners that are gathering this and next weekend  for the shows and decided to come here to see what's up .

...good to see some of you still here, have a great day guys !

just joking, have fun at the concerts.

I know Sarah, it's your way...took me a long time to "get it" ...lol !

:)~

Turtle's "jam in my face" comment is pretty spot on. If I was sitting on the back porch, 10-12 deep in some tallboys, after a full rack of ribs and wash that down with a quart of whiskey, maybe I'd want to see your sister nekid.

... at any rate Lynn it's great your feelin' it. Those cookies look awesome and I'm sure the ol' zoner crew will love them.

Now I want a cookie.

mostly because  surprisingly they've yet to play the SF Bay Area...

Weir sitting in with Was & Friends at HSBG was great

Can we at least all agree wsp is better than bob's wolf bros?

I've listened to whole Wolf Bros shows. Probably because it's familiar and I like Bob songs like I like Hornsby stuff and yacht rock.

My one panic show at the Greek is the only whole Panic show I've been able to listen from start to finish.

I think I’m with Slacker on this.  While WSP might technically be better I’d rather listen to Wolf Bros

would you rather listen to Dead and Co or Wolf Brothers?

Gun to my head I’d probably go with Wolf Bros

Oteil, Jeff and Mayer have chops, so I'd go w/D&C.

(We're talking for FREE, right?)

Depends on the night of the week and who's toured recently. If there's streams we might listen to either on a Friday but maybe not on a Wednesday during survivor.

I skip a lot of streams like Phish because my wife likes them less than me but sometimes I check in and hear a jam and I'll start cranking it in the apartment. Probably after a hit.

Last night's shows were played like a gig should have been played in a very small club.

These shows have been great and a ton of fun!

If you aren't a fan of Bob then don't go. Or if you don't like/can't accept the way he has aged and his diminished skills then don't go.

Pretty simple really!

I can't stand JRAD or Phil's "family" band so I don't go.

>>>>>if you don't like/can't accept the way he has aged and his diminished skills then don't go

I don’t.  I still turn on a stream while I’m cooking dinner or something though.  Sometimes it’s okay, sometimes like last night it’s really mind blowingly bad.

>>>>>>>I can't stand JRAD or Phil's "family" band so I don't go.

Me neither.  Dead and Co too.  I still listen to a little bit of a stream now and then out of curiosity.

Is all that okay with everybody?

See you at the Cap Lynn.  Ilolol   WSP RULES!!!!

As long as we're comparing, I think we all agree that a typical high school Dead cover band is better than the Terrapin Family Band.

>>  As long as we're comparing, I think we all agree that a typical high school Dead cover band is better than the Terrapin Family Band.

If what you desire is the perfect rendition, there are many excellent bands that perform Grateful Dead songs- but I have never been about perfection and never will be. I do promise that I will always do my best to follow my weird. I hope you will join me, but I do understand if your path takes you elsewhere.

>>>>>>If what you desire is the perfect rendition

Not looking for perfection but at least expect competence.

I like it.

I feel sad people flock to it now, but when he had a much stronger band, like Ratdog in 2000-2001, the crowds were far more sparse<<<

It's a trio.  Would not a more applicable comparison be Scaring the Children?

But I'd even go so far as to say this "ensemble" sometimes has a foot in the door of a Weir "solo" project - complete with the support of a drummer and bass player.   This is not to say they don't play well as a band, but I think Bobby excels when he's in the midst of a bunch of moving parts; providing him a platform to explore.   While being a central figure of the "whirlwind" might be a part of his "genius"; I think the flipside baggage of his gift causes him to stumble at times when he's out there all by himself.   A stool with three legs can easily stand on its own ... and maybe he just wants more of a stable platform to sometimes be the "big leg" more in the light of a solo performance?

Likewise, I can't help but wonder if he feels too much of a cog in the wheel of D&C ... whereby Wolf Bros might be a great way to be afforded more personal space.  I also commend him for somewhat adopting Phil's approach on a smaller scale by inviting a regular stream of guests to sit in.  While it's definitely more of a controlled manner than a complete reshuffle that Phil has embraced (much more so in the past), it's somewhat of big deal for Bobby ... who's tended to stay tethered to fixed lineups.

free tickets if you want them

Few and far between are the stellar moments  but god bless him, he is still doing it

I will always love Bobby though
