Apparently, they are very aggressive and territorial & tend to claim a disproportionately large amount of buffer space relative to what would "naturally occur" up front.

Someone on a Phish board posted the following re: that photo:
It's always like that up there. Just walk up there and see for yourself. I've watched some of these people literally dancing in 10 foot circles while everyone else behind them is packed in. In the photo you can see the lines that run straight back to the soundboard. They are dead center. The newbie rail riders who are not in the core group are off to the sides, which is more crowded.
I don't get it either, but it really sounds as if some people have adopted an aggressive posture on this front. I imagine it's more a combination of tactics vs. a sole reliance upon strong arming ... have heard people mention repeated verbal demands upon "interlopers" to leave ... as well as dancing "big" to guard one's space. I imagine they become very direct in their whole confrontation if it comes down to it. Apparently, there was a fight on the Friday at Dicks that may have involved these sorts of issues.
The photo is is a bit strange. I've been to a ton of GA Phish shows and it's never looked like that up front. The photo is almost certainly contextually misleading.
And we've been all through this about Phish rail-riders.
They ARE a group of regulars, but they're fine with and embrace anyone, as long as they pay with their time like everyone else who is up there.
Almost all the people on the rail at GA Phish shows get in line early in the morning and spend all day in line, and there is very little of their friends showing up a half-hour before showtime and joining them in the front.
A number of people who are regulars on Phish rails are friends of mine and they're total sweethearts, but they wouldn't let me barge in at the last minute, and of course because I'm not an asshole I would never ask them or try.
But friends or not, whoever you are, if you're in line in the morning you're welcomed and are an equal part of the party.
They just don't condone those who wander in at the last minute and push their way to the front.
If you want more perspective on the rail riders, check out this interview (or some of it anyway - it's 40 minutes long) by Tom Marshall of Derek Gregory, aka Antelope Greg. He is probably the most well known and notorious rail rider in the Phish community. I don't know if I agree with all of his thoughts on the matter, but found it pretty interesting. These folks invest some serious time into getting their spot on the rail. He mentions that there are even some who pay another to wait in line for them, much like the whole poster insanity.
If someone gets in line early and stakes a claim up front, power to them. If they then think that they are entitled to enough room to dance big, and comfortably lounge around between songs, they can go fuck themselves. That's prime real estate.
I first saw this at Oakland for one of the Dead or Other Ones New Years. I had a comfy spot on the rail, totally understanding that it would get crowded. I got pushed out by huge tarps for 2 people and some skirted dude intentionally dancing big and kicking people out of his way.
Like I said, you wouldn't see that shit on the East Coast, where people understand what it means to be up front. Prime real estate gets crowded, and you have no right to more than your space.
I wonder if there was much blanket resistance on the west coast during Furthur Fest. Seems one would need a lot of courage to disturb blankets out west.
When I go to outdoor shows I see plenty of blankets up front, but by the time the music starts they've disappeared and everyone is packed in and dancing small. Dunno what happened to the blankets.
I always figured that the 1 + 1 rule worked pretty well for the line to get in the venue. Once you're in and on the rail you can come and go and still save your spot until the music starts (that's what the blankets are for), but you can't save a spot for a late-comer.
Once the music starts and the space closes up, you leave - you lose your spot.
The Phish are all very good looking men. I understand completely why people would fight to the death to be able to stare directly at them, with no one in the way, for even a moment.
I can recall volleyball courts set up front at an outdoor dead show. The nets came down right before the show and tons of elbow room followed. A brilliantly engineered example of crowd control.
Nothing compares to the DNB Hoodie Mafia - who use actual hoodies to stake out their territory. Once posted a photo of the absurdity, and then received a phone call from a lunatic telling me that I had no right to take a photo of her hoodie without her permission. After I talked the lunatic down, she even offered to allow me to share her hoodie space and stand next to her on the rail at an upcoming show, which is way is better than what the Amish creep offered me. yeah, probably very nice people who are just the most important music fans at a show, because the band needs to see THEM. Oy.
I've heard that one - kinda interesting. Those Tom Marshall Podcasts are great for flights. I also like the "Helping Friendly Podcast" and "Inside Out"
easily the weirdest, most unsettling part of TXR or DNB shows. this is the guy with the hunchback amish mom? once i was in back for some PLF show at TXR and she just runs up in front of me and starts rubbing her hands all over my face and making these weird whooping noises...i just stood there, mouth open, i have never been so bewildered and confused in my life. when she saw i was pretty clearly pissed off, she got this look on her face like a light went off in her head, and she realized where she was and what she was doing, and just said; "oh! sorry!" and ran off.
Seen / attended many Phish shoes, most recently some MSG "Bakers' Dozen" back in July.
The most Unique and Fun ones for me were a brief run in Northern Europe in 1997. London, Amsterdam, Köln and Brussels.
I went overseas with my Pals for that Taste of Phish Euro Tour, and it was Pretty Kool.

I was the somewhat realistic Tour-Guide, if you can imagine that..,,
Those Kiddoes had never flown out of the USA in their Lives, and it was up to me to teach them how to thrive in Foreign Countries. I had to explain to the one Fellow, "No, you are not technically allowed to Puff a Reefer on the Amsterdam City Public Bus..."
One guy passed away some years back. The other fellow is alive & kickin' for now.
We had tons O' Fun and got Loaded on various Trains throughout Europe. It all was an Amazing experience for our small, yet Cohesive group.
My Favorite Meal was in some very nice spot in Köln where I had a Gorgeous roasted swine-leg, cooked to Perfection.
The Most Weird meal was at some red-light district tavern in Brussels. It took an extremely long time for us all to get our "Chicken Wings". I still think that they had to trap enough Pigeons that Night. No, I am not kidding. It was extremely Bizarre. And if I say "Bizarre" well you have to acknowledge that it is somewhat different from "Normal" even for Crazy people.
The Lodging Hotel that evening was also Absolutely Weird. I can not even begin to explain.
Stu was in Brussels a couple of times. Great "white wine pot of Mussels". Some great beers. Other than that I found it very expensive compared to Amsterdam and the locals were not welcoming. On a scale of 1 to 10 with Amsterdam being a 10 Brussels was a 3. Never want to go back. One of my sons friends told me he was considering attending college there. I shot it down and said he should consider University of Amsterdam. Thats the shit!!! Now where were we, oh right Phish hoodies boys. I refer to Roshambo and what ever she says. The ambassador knows or knows someone who knows.
Sadly, I've never been overly impressed with the bulk 'quality' of Phish show attendees (or music/lyrics IMO) and not surprised at this downgrade either.
..... going to see Phil at the Allman's fest in Florida and all the "Allmans Mafia" zip-tied their camp chairs together to prevent traffic to/from rail!
.... getting bullied and yelled at by a young wook down front at the CAP last October for standing in front of his girlfriend for literally 45 seconds as I was planning my route to the side aisle!
this thread brings back some strange memories. the txr amish guy + mom. holy shit. fucking wild. how do those kinds of people actually exist in the real world outside of shows?
>>The little shitbirds ruined the fucking Dead scene after 90
There were only about 50 Phishies in 1990, and they generally weren't shitbirds. That contingent only came along after 1994, and the Dead scene was already well fucked by that point.
20,000 people were "on tour" with the Dead, and only 1,000 of them actually cared to see the show. Every dirt surfer was slinging something. Before 1994, Shakedown would pretty much close down during the show. It then became just as bustling during as it was before or after.
The Phish scene pre-1995 was pretty chill, with small crowds and people who were there 100% for the music. It was a younger crowd too and in my mid-20s, felt like one of the oldest dudes on the lot.
But the Phish scene went downhill fast right after Jerry died and all the dregs and spunions from the Dead lot moved over to Phish without skipping a beat.
I'll admit I read far more of that Phantasy thread than I should have. And then went down some Antelope Greg rabbit hole. Such drama on the Phish tour. Now I see why I like the back of the lawn so much in my older age (relative on this site).
>>>> getting bullied and yelled at by a young wook down front at the CAP last October for standing in front of his girlfriend for literally 45 seconds<<<<
I was curious and clicked on the FOM link first without without the audio on and thought... ok - at least the young heads are spinning and dancing blissfully. (But slowly. Practically deliberately. Must be a 'Standing on the Moon' or something.)
Then I randomly clicked the sound on during the crescendo -- or what used to be the crescendo -- of 'Jackstraw' and thought... I feel sorry for these kids, they are missing out on the fire of old time GD Jackstraw that at the very least raised your heart rate --- resulting in a definite adrenaline high if not ecstatic exhaustion.
I remember seeing a video of Weir and Hornsby playing Jack Straw a few years after Jerry passed, and I found their performance interesting--the word "ornate" comes to mind--but that fire was all but extinguished, and that was 20 years ago at least.
So Alan got me to click on FOM's link and after listening for a bit thought the same thing. Closed video and below it in the youtoobs was Oak Coliseum 7/87 JStraw. Went straight to the same jam section of the song... Talk about day and night.
My grandparents don't charge what Bob charges to hear their stories. That said he gets to do what he wants, but it is a choice I saw him play a whole set with DSO a few months ago and the tempos were normal. It's personally disappointing because I actually like everything about Dead & Co, the crowd, Otiell, Mayer, Chementi, and Mickey's nightly experiments, but I just find myself getting agitated every time I go and in today's world I don't need to seek that out.
The good thing is there are so many flavors of live GD music now that I get to pick and choose.

Glad I lived when I did.

I remember seeing a video of Weir and Hornsby playing Jack Straw a few years after Jerry passed, and I found their performance interesting--the word "ornate" comes to mind--but that fire was all but extinguished, and that was 20 years ago at least.

Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own
It's my belief the slower tempos are a necessary adjustment for Bobby to allow him to express his musical gift at this stage of the game.
Do you not listen to the stories of your aging grandparents because their delivery isn't exactly what it once was?

My grandparents don't charge
My grandparents don't charge what Bob charges to hear their stories. That said he gets to do what he wants, but it is a choice I saw him play a whole set with DSO a few months ago and the tempos were normal. It's personally disappointing because I actually like everything about Dead & Co, the crowd, Otiell, Mayer, Chementi, and Mickey's nightly experiments, but I just find myself getting agitated every time I go and in today's world I don't need to seek that out.
The good thing is there are so many flavors of live GD music now that I get to pick and choose.
