Hurricane Ian

Forums:

Picking up from the Fiona thread, looks like Cuba and the west coast of Florida is in for some heavy weather.

I hope everyone's okay. Where you at?

It's been strengthening over the last 7.5 hours, now it appears an eye wall is trying to form;

tis the season

least strong storms of the rest of humanity

Can't wait for that AHOLE Desantis to have his hand out for the federal funds once Ian hits FL.  Not that they aren't entitled to it, just that he thinks everything in Washington is wrong.  Hope Dark Brandon makes him sweat.

Was thinking of the irony of DeSantis looking to turn residents into migrants by developing an evacuation plan

Both FL and GA have already declared emergencies which I think more or less requests/introduces federal assistance via available funding. I am happy to now have a President whom doesn't - and shouldn't - play selfish, pitiful politics in such instances. Fact is, in reality, these bigger, more destructive storms and natural disasters are going to get increasingly expensive. Pakistan's economic minister is resigning after the recent catastrophic flooding has quite unfavorably tipped things over there.

Buckle up, Floridians.

Went to the beach today, waded in a tore up about a dozen pre-storm Makerel ranging from 16"-30",a few small jacks too. A few real big ones cut me off after a few runs.

just found out our flight to Denver on Wednesday is canceled, now seeing if we can get out tomorrow. We moved it once already from Thursday to Wednesday

Good luck getting out of town Fabes. As you may have seen, Zoner Tim also swears by the pre-storm fishing opportunities.  Hopefully your freezer holds up when the power goes out.

There's now a well defined eye

I think I will head out for some more pre-storm fishing, and Hopefully slay the Spanish Makerel again. The new house came with a nice set up for hurricanes. It has a system on the windows that allows me to put up corrugated steel panels over my windows to board up the home. I won't put them up unless it's heading here. Some of the neighbors had them up last week, rookies. If I do put it up it will only be on three windows in the front and back, the sides is a wind alley and I do not think any debris that will be flying down that alley will be able to pull a 90degree turn thru the windows. Small house not many windows. I also have a small generator that can run my fridge and other stuff. I have beer, liquor and will go get more weed today. Wife is pissed we can't get to Denver but that is more about seeing our son, then fear of the storm. He will be home in December.

We did have the eye pass over us before when we lived in Clermont. It was awesome! Just Kaos going on all around, and then it stops dead, and then Kaos again.

I was in the eye of a Hurricane in Virginia Beach once, 50 years or so ago.

Ian at sunrise

Cape Coral under evacuation, looks like I will have Family coming over, my daughter, husband, two dogs and three cats, maybe he can bring his Traeger and we can smoke meats during the storm?

my other daughter is in Brooksville finishing a residency to be a nurse practitioner today, and she may be the only one driving south on 75. Brooksville/Gainesville is my pick of where this one is going.

Are Floridians pronouncing it as Hurricane Eee-yan, or Hurricane Eeen?

I am probably the only moron trying to get to Fla before Ian hits

Now we have a hydraulic leak

maint will tell us in 20 min if it's a go or not

The storm trajectory is now farther south than this morning, which is great news for Tampa Bay, as they'll now be in the offshore winds, vs onshore, which greatly reduces the storm surge.  Hopefully that verifies.

Good luck Tim!

Take the $5K vouchers and enjoy Chicago for a few

Heads Up - Jim Cantore is in Punta Gorda

Already spawning tornados. Ian is going to be a nasty one.

Yikes!

Pretty mellow night, but still a constant light rain and the wind is picking up this morning. About 90% of the neighbors are boarded up, or corrugated steeled up. Buckle up kids!

Stay safe everybody. This one looks dangerous.

We have friends and relatives all along Ian's projected track - Key West, Marco Island, Tampa, Jax Beach, and Greenville S'C.

Hope they're all OK.

I'll say stay safe most everybody in Florida. Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, Marco Rubio, and Matt Gaetz can all go fuck themselves in the eye of the hurricane for all I care.

Stay safe,  any one heard from Earl?

I see scenes like this and I don't understand. I live 3,000 miles away and I know not to park my car near the beach in Naples today. https://twitter.com/kylagaler/status/1575194454234869760

NPR was speaking of 18' storm surges on the western side. Safe passage to all.

Except Dump, D'shitus, Gets, and Pubio. They can go fuck themselves. But know that i say this from a more loving space now...:-)

Trying to talk my son inlaw into going out and doing some looting.

what town are you in?

Loose power

gust today up to 49 mph

as per my son

dosing and looting is like pb&j

We lost power here in Sebastian about 2 hours ago. No wifi, internet spotty. Wind is howling outside the door. Rumors of cannibalism are rampant…

No power, no TV and lots of texts from friends saying our area got smashed

going out in a few to survey damage as soon as I figure out how to get coffee in me

Try making some cold brew, Fabes. Best when it sits fully overnite but it can be done to satisfactory levels of caffeine release in about eight hours.

Wild looking storm.

made our way to my daughters place, she got blown up. Will need a new roof and fence. Spent the day cleaning debris at two homes

going to fire up the grill, drink some whiskey and smoke some bud

Glad you made it through it all Fabes.  The pics of the devastation in Ft. Meyers are incredible and it could have been much worse for you guys.

At least wind damage should be covered under your daughter's homeowners policy, but I imagine contractors will be booked solid for many months and blue tarps will be common trappings in your neck of the woods for the foreseeable future.

I'm curious, Fabes. In Louisiana I've had not major damage from hurricanes in the past. Since Katrina the laws changed to the insurance companies advantage.  In a named storm home owner's deductible no longer applies.  The deductible automatically shoots up to ten percent of the policy.

I have to pay ten percent out of pocket instead of my $500 deductible.

Is Florida like that?

Jaz, I have never had to make a claim from a storm before. I will let you know what my daughter finds out as soon she speaks to adjuster. Her roof was old so I am thinking they will apply depreciation to it and she may not get much.

still no power, and camping at home. Most street lights are out so driving is very interesting. Lots of coast guard and Army helicopters in the air. I must be on the route that they are using to save people on the islands. Oldtimer next door tied off his sail boat to a mooring on Ft Myers beach waiting to go back and get her.

>>>tied off his sail boat to a mooring on Ft Myers beach waiting to go back and get her.

Probably stuck up in a tree miles from where he left her.

Messy. The state of FL was forced to bolster the system as many insurer's left the state. They used to routinely fight over whether any damage was due to flooding, a wind event, or, lastly, a  hurricane.

"Hurricane Ian could cripple Florida's home insurance industry"

https://www.yahoo.com/gma/hurricane-ian-could-cripple-floridas-164500343...

...this part may help your daughter anyway:

"Among other things, it prohibits insurance companies from denying coverage based on the age of a roof and limits attorney fees on frivolous claims and lawsuits."

Best wishes Fabes, and all who are affected

^^both Rubio & Scott voting no/absent against govt funding while simultaneously seeking quick hand-out. Par for that GOP course of hypocrisy.

"Marco Rubio, Rick Scott urge Senate leaders for more funds to recover, rebuild Florida after Hurricane Ian"

<<In 2012 and 2013, Rubio voted against the larger aid packages for victims of Hurricane Sandy but supported smaller aid bills. Superstorm Sandy made landfall Oct. 29, 2012, and devastated portions of the East Coast, including New York and New Jersey.

In 2013, then-U.S. Rep. DeSantis voted against hurricane aid for Sandy’s victims.

Just got some of that good old Florida Socialism. I have only Met my son in law's Uncle Chuck at my daughters wedding. Uncle Chuck made a run to Ft Lauderdale and brought back charcoal and ice. Just met up with him and we gave him some meatballs and chicken we had cooked for dinner, and he gave us a bag of charcoal a couple bags of ice, and then he handed me about a half ounce of weed. I heard my son in laws family doesn't care much for Uncle Chuck because of some gambling issues. Weed, gambling, drinks, this is my kind of guy, aces in my book

Strawbud - insurance business is gambling, except we the homeowner, or life insurance holder bets that we will lose, and the insurance companies bets we will win, and Florida is Vegas in the insurance Industry, Businesses have been built and lost on the Florida Gamble. It's like da cocaine "they will be back for more"

And thanks Strawbud for the info, much appreciated

Ian

the 4 landfall storm that keeps on fuckin

hope all is well

Power is back on, God Bless those linemen and keep 'em safe

Cool and those Uncle Chucks ARE the best.

Weather report not so sweet.

Holy shit the devastation.

How are yall?

GaterNado

350,000 will be displaced, holy fuck.

West burning, south flooding,, our property value just keeps going up n up.

The linemen, Uncle Chuck, there are people who sustain us. I include Zoners in that group.

My BIL is volunteering at a Ft Meyers shelter with Red Cross for the next 2 weeks helping to coordinate operations. He's a good one..

My sis was calling around trying to get him a hotel room nearby but of course there's no vacancies , so he'll be sleeping on a cot  at the community center with about 1000 folks.

Son in law put his boat in the water today, and he and Uncle Chuck loaded up with Supplies went to St. James City on Pine Island to see what was left of Uncle Chuck's office. Totally destroyed except two heavy filing cabinets. He knew it but wanted to see it with his own eyes, and also drop off supplies to one of his employees who lives and stayed on the island. Son in-law said they have no help out there, and the people that are left and trying to stick it out are in real bad shape. He said it was really hard passing people in need to take what the had to his employee and her Mom, life long residents of the island.

Nancy, did your sister try the casino in Imokolee? They were helping house people during the storm.

Thanks - Not sure, but he probably won't want to displace hurricane victims - he flew in to provide assistance as a trained Red Cross volunteer. Sometimes they put them up in area hotels but when there's limited resources it's bunking with the masses

Biden visiting Ft Meyers today with DeSantis

and worth mentioning that DeSantis has voted against funding recovery efforts in other States. Biden won't mention it, but we all need to remember what a POS DeSantis really is

Screen Shot 2022-10-05 at 4.48.59 PM.png

^^FL Man!

Shit is starting to get sadly more real with remnant flooding/road closures, food and fresh water shortages, no electricity/AC, increasing risk of mold, critter infestations, looting, etc.

From that picture it looks like Biden is wooing the rural Republican vote, and the reaction was a gut punch to Desantis

cracker, ass, cracker

A Hurricane always hurts but at the same time we residence see what this country can do in a crisis. The south east US states that are hit with hurricanes have a network of lineman, tree trimmers, heavy machinery operators, along with the Red Cross, FEMA, and military that spring into action like a well oiled army. Sure it is driven by capitalism, and our taxes, but it is the working people coming together to pitch in, to help, to sustain their own lives as well as ours. Thank you

Hurricanes bring out the best and the worst in people. Usually its the best.

Thank god the weather has not been Florida brutal for the ones with no electricity or AC.

That picture above is priceless.

Any thoughts of relocation ? Ya know this shit's just gonna keep on happening. Anyone who rebuilds anywhere's near the coast will never be able to afford the insurance. Forget rebuilding on Sanibel Captiva or Pine Is till that cleanup is done, years from now,, then forget getting insurance for it.

>>>Any thoughts of relocation ? Ya know this shit's just gonna keep on happening.

Yeah I hear Nova Scotia is nice. Oh never mind they just got slammed by a hurricane too. It's global climate change and no where is safe. The biggest problem with FL isn't hurricanes it's what rising sea levels will do to the fresh water supply. No drinking water makes it a tough place to live.

But where to go? Sure avoid the coasts but that won't spare you from the flooding. The Great Lakes are all going to flood with the melting of the ice caps. Sydney just broke their all time rainfall total with another two months to go. If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will.
