Frost comes to mind

Frost comes to mind

I repeat myself, when I'M nervous

people would get excited in colorado when they played it.

Hard to choose from so many great ones, and Jorma kills that song too.

Didn't Phil say that was the first song they played at his first rehearsal with the Warlocks?

I've always been partial to the 12/29/77 version that's so gentle and trippy, as well as the one they played at the Frost in '88 as a China/Rider encore. That one is reflective and gentle as well, which is not a word I'd use for much of what the band did in that late '80s era.

My personal favorite though is 9/12/81 at the Greek to close that great first set. It doesn't come across as well on the tapes, but the band was on fire and Phil was the devil himself on that one.

My favorite encore!

Those '81 China>Rider>Samson triple-deckers (NYC & Philly?) were smokin'.

In 1974 I was aware of IKYR from Hot Tuna. One day I heard China/Rider from Europe 72 on the radio. My older brother who wasn't a Deadhead had the album for some reason. I listened to all six sides and got on the bus.

Byrds 1966 IKYR

Well personally I enjoy the early ones when Phil is kinda singing lead. Then when they brought it back fall 1969 and started pairing it with China Cat, Phil still was predominant on the vocals even singing it with a folky phrasing of ..I know you rider... throw back to 66 I guess but the band didn't settle on the final arrangement till a little later when bobby started singing the back door line.

Interesting though is the Byrds 1966 version isn't folky at all played more the way the dead eventually played it later.

Great rider and killer freakin show. Top 5 plf I attended.

Nice. I like that line up!

Those '81 China>Rider>Samson triple-deckers (NYC & Philly?) were smokin'.>>>

3/9/81 MSG & 5/4/81 Spectrum are 2 of my favorite pre-drums early 80's.  To Lay Me Down>Camptown Races Jam>Playin' on 5/4 was insanely good

I still go back to 5/13/05 a couple times a year, maybe Phil's best one off lineup

That 5/4/81 show was really good, taped that one too:

another really good early 80's I Know You Rider was 2/21/82 Pauley Pavillion, UCLA

2-21-82I listened yesterday , mine is missing the china cat but the Rider is pretty raging.
