Here’s a comment for the people who are upset that MN hasn’t charged Jonathan Ross already: If you just Leeeroy Jenkins this shit you will lose and you will empower fascism and murder. It is indescribably hard to prosecute cops for murder. It is even hard when the murder is ON VIDEO.

There was a broad consensus in 1992 — among people like those likely reading this thread — that the Rodney King video inarguably showed illegal police brutality. The cops were acquitted. LA burned. For multiple reasons the jurors didn’t share that reality or perception.

It’s nice to have crime on video but there is a great danger of video making a prosecution overconfident and complacent. I won a prison riot case years back when I was on the Indigent Defense Panel because of that — the prosecution was overconfident in the video.

Prosecuting a cop for misconduct, let alone murder, is the hardest prosecution you can do in America. Thanks to America’s culture it’s like trying to convict a fucking kitten for high treason. It’s like trying to convict Jesus. You just cannot rush over confidently into that.

A huge part of what makes it very hard to convict Jonathan Ross for murder was baked into America generations before Trump was President. That’s the primary factor that lets law enforcement kill with impunity, not Trump. Dick Wolf has killed more black men than Leopold II.

So, the Jonathan Ross case. Imagine that MN prosecutors listen to people on the internet and rush to charge him to show “we don’t tolerate murder around here.” The feds have swept up all the physical crime scene evidence and quite possibly altered, destroyed, or disappeared it.

The feds will be co-opting and threatening witnesses, and stochastically encouraging Trumpists to do so. The ICE agents on scene will be expected and eager to lie however necessary to defend their fellow Gestapo. Anyone within ICE who cooperates will be attacked, fired, maybe prosecuted.

There will be legions of junk scientists and gun-for-hire experts ready to testify that Ross was following policy and acted reasonably. (And this all elides the complicated set of rules that will apply when the prosecution gets removed to federal court, by the way.)

If you think it is obvious that the videos prove murder and nobody can say otherwise, your view is based on how you want the system to be, not how it is. It will be brutally hard, fighting inch by inch against what America is, to convict Jonathan Ross. Your feelings don’t enter into it.

That is why it is utterly foolish to be mad they haven’t charged Jonathan Ross already. Any chance of winning demands meticulous planning. That’s what I hope they do.

Postscript: I am indebted to this post to make me realize that my life will be better with a new blocking rule, and that’s why I am blocking everyone who responds to this with “so you’re saying give up? So you’re saying don’t prosecute?

 Never stated that my impression is that they won't have an election, it was a question for others to answer. Not every question asked means that a mind has been made up, sometimes it's helpful to poll the people, especially here, we all come from different areas. If I plan to vote in the next election, then I haven't given up. The ones that need convincing are those that voted for this in the first place. If it won't be fair, what will you do about it? 

In my opinion, that the president is going to "cancel" elections (either by declaring some yuge emergency or other) is as equally as much a left wing conspiracy theory as it is a right wing one. Fascism still requires popular support to "work". It's dependent on elections, actually. He doesn't have popular support. His support is more like in a death spiral. What's much more likely than trying to smash 50 different elections simultaneously is the undermining of a legitimate final result (ala 2020 and j6), but again he currently has WAY less support even than he did then. Be aware he is additionally losing the bulk support of the 2A crowd in real time now.

Separately, elections are 100% under the purview of individual secretaries of state. Like, fully. Trump could presumably drum up varying levels of support to undermine results in a few states, but if there is an actual mechanism for the executive branch to reach into state elections en masse, nobody I have heard has ever come close to explaining how this would or could actually "work."

Not a lot I can do besides the first two, but I permanently deleted my fallow amazon account, and also my online shopping rewards accounts with Macy's, Home Depot, and Lowes. Permanently deleted spotify, hulu, and pandora accounts, canceled my delta dental insurance (affiliatedwith united health). Admittedly I've been boycotting all of them for about two years but figure permanently deleting the accounts today might send a message? Hope so

eliminating as many recurring payments as possible is actually like one of the keys to life

ask any good capitalist, they'll tell you the same 

so if this protest awakens people to that little nugget then I'm all for it

The only recurring payment I have is my SPOT tracker which I manually suspend when not in use and nugs. I don't do any television and kicked Verizon to the curb last year

This brand of white supremacist authoritarianism was always going to be way more difficult to pull off than in other countries because it relies on putting the toothpaste back in the tube. We aren't China, Russia or Nazi Germany, but multicultural authoritarianism will work just fine here and the oligarchs are watching.
