Israel

Forums:

I usually don't follow the whole Israeli situation because I view it mostly as a mob war. No good guys on either side. That said congrats to those of you who had Israeli Civil War on your 2023 bingo card.

I read the article linked below which brought up an issue I hadn't heard of. When Israel was founded the Ultra Orthodox were given special status in that they didn't have to serve in the military and the men could spend their lives studying the Tora. They made up less than 1% of the population at the time and most people thought orthodox religiosity was on it's way out after WWII.

Now they make up 15% of the population and are the driving force behind the move to strip power from judiciary, which in the Israel government is the only check on the Prime Minister. The Ultra Orthodox today live mostly on welfare payments and don't serve in the military, and in Israel everyone serves in the military -  that service is deeply ingrained into Israeli life.

I just can't imagine what  it would be like to have your government hijacked by a bunch of freeloader religious whack jobs who contribute absolutely nothing to society.

The Trump years?

And IF any of the current GOP candidates get into the Oval Office they're going to follow Bibi's playbook. Israel has the Ultra Orthodox and America's got Evangelicals who want inject their crazy religious beliefs into government

Worst people I ever met were Israelis. There were good ones but a lot were just not friendly or nice. Most travelers don't like them. They like to congregate at certain traveler cool places around the world and ruin the vibe.  They usually just hang with other Israelis and treat other people like a lower class. Ironically I love Israel. Been there twice and lived there for 6 months once. I was working in a restaurant and Hotel. The woman I worked for was a horrible spoiled Prima Donna though who ripped me off on my pay when I quit. Said she knew the Police when I complained about her short changing me. I was an illegal worker so had no power.Plus the pay was very low.

Yeah the Israelis were a pain when traveling, but to be fair most of them had just gotten out of their military conscription service and were just trying to travel for as long as they could on the little money they had. They also had much more of a spring break vibe than other travelers. They were looking for the cheapest place to get drunk and hook up. They could care less where they actually were. Saw more than one No Israelis sign in India.

But kxela I lived there also. Not just meeting them while traveling. Almost every traveler I met said the same. They wre the worst people they ever met.
