Is it racist to wear this dress to prom?

You want to wear that dress to Prom..you go, boy.

skip the heels?

IMHO, what one wears is not racist; however, how one acts may be a different story...

Yeah, if poolboy wore that dress to his prom and talked like Ping Pong that would be racist.

Cultural appropriation?   Sure, she is wearing a South Asian style outfit to a North American high school event.  No worse than a white person enjoying some vada sambar, a Navajo kid in a Oakland Raiders hoodie, or a black dude getting a bowl of pho.   If it wasn't for cultural appropriation, we would all still be living in caves and grunting.

That girls got the onion of a black girl, speaking on racialproportions

I would take that racist to prom, despite her cultural failings.

I surfed with a real life version of Long Duc Dong this weekend. He was amazing.

^ Easily offended and a proponet of classism!  Joke's on you.

We're on the same  Jr Admin team now, Sarah. It's that peachy!

The fact that anyone would consider the wearing of that dress racist is fucking stupid. Is eating a kielbasa racist?

I scratch my head at the dipshits that label Halloween costumes as racist. It’s Halloween and it’s a costume.

By the way, Turts, A Haoli surfing is racist towards Hawaiians.

What are guys doing with their hands in that photo?

>>>We're on the same  Jr Admin team now, Sarah. It's that peachy

And I thought the asshole who told me to go choke on a sausage out of the blue was a dude. Leaning in I guess.

Effective immediately, Cinco de mayo will be canceled for all non Mexicans. Turn in your tequila and Tecate.

You must not be from Chicago, Bucky. "Go choke on a sausage" is just her way of flirting with you. If I weren't such a  "proponet" of classism I wouldn't know that.

nanzi is just acting stupid now. I know you can't help it...

Slacker's got no come back for the pool boy moniker. Almost feel sorry for the little guy.

It's hard to choose side's when it comes to the 2 most powerful women on Viva.  I am afraid to tangle with either of them.

>nanzi is just acting stupid now. I know you can't help it...

Right on. Now that's what I'm talking about!

>>>a Navajo kid in a Oakland Raiders hoodie

Definitely cultural appropriation. Everybody knows the Oakland Raiders fan base is exclusively Mexican.

St Mark has never been to a Raider game.

>A Haoli surfing is racist towards Hawaiians.<

lol.

I literally don't even get this stuff.

When I was traveling with my family in Germany, my mom asked for a recipe when served a dessert at someones' house. She was rebuffed with a "No, this dish should only be made in Germany".

Well yeah, the above is racist, unless it's scathing social commentary. A little girl dressed like Pocahontas isn't.

I admire those whom absorb that which another culture has provided.  It is a sign of advanced learning and furthers creative development.  Anyone standing in the way of that advancement must be detained and questioned ...

>>>>I scratch my head at the dipshits that label Halloween costumes as racist. It’s Halloween and it’s a costume

Really? You don’t understand why white people dressing in black-face for Halloween is messed up? And you think people who think that’s wrong are dipshits??

wow. I’d say you and the black face person were the dipshits in this equation.

>>  You don’t understand why white people dressing in black-face for Halloween is messed up?

BrianK's quoted comment came before the blackface picture. He was speaking generally about cultural appropriation in Halloween costumes, not about black face.

oh ok. thank you Brian’s spokesperson.

Is that the case, Brian?

Yeah, I was talking about kids dressing as Native Americans and shit, not racist fratboys using Halloween as an excuse to play out their shit in public. There is a huge difference.

Back to topic...does intent matter?

i only posted that pic because your comment could be very easily interpreted as casual racism, and thought you might appreciate someone letting you know.

i know i would.

 >>>St Mark has never been to a Raider game.

I've been to a few. Road games for the Silver & Black, obviously.

That’s the problem. People interpret anything and everything how they want, and they think they’re right. Honestly, I don’t care how someone interpreted what I wrote. It was a casual comment, and there was nothing racist about it.

Its political correctness run amok. A pretty dress can’t just be a pretty dress. The girl is what, 18? Someone made and sold the dress to her. She liked it and wore it to prom. Blame them for corrupting the minds of the youth.

Where does it stop? Do we need legislation so people don’t have to feel offended? Does some innocent prom-goer have to become the talk of the innerwebz because of a dress? Is it casual racism when a gentile uses a Yiddish word or goes to a kosher deli? What about white boys listening to rap?

927FF68C-FC2D-4A03-94FB-50864383FA57.jpegThere are 1.37 billion Chinese, and about 700,000,000 Caucasians, which makes the Chinese th dominant culture. Now look at that s picture and tell me if it’s cultural appropriation and casual racism of the dominant culture towards the minority. It’s exacty the same content as the prom dress.

Cultural sensitivity, where does it stop I ask you, the horror, the horror

>Do we need legislation so people don’t have to feel offended? <

no, they get a viva username...

I didn't realize that this was a national news story:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/02/world/asia/chinese-prom-dress.html?ac...

Interesting read, which includes a history of the controversial dress.

Nice meme.

Is there a Cultural Sensitivity Police Academy?

BTW: I got a better look at that group photo: The guys were doing some "Gang-sign-looking thing" - probably school initials.

IMHO, the dress is not the problem, but the girls' stereotypical Asian bow-with-hands-together pose is sure to trigger more than a few people.  Not saying that was their intent, but that is a good example of implicit bias and potential micro aggression.

They could definitely benefit from a non-threatening, but clear explanation from an offended party...

Praying hands aren't offensive.

Not praying hands, just a typical greeting.

>stereotypical Asian bow-with-hands-together pose is sure to trigger more than a few people.

when I was traveling in SE Asia last summer, the bow with hands together was just common courtesy and expected - even for visitors. it's considered rude NOT to return the bow.

if a group of Asians wore western attire  and were photographed giving one another high 5's, would you be triggered?

>>>Do we need legislation so people don’t have to feel offended?

>>>no, they get a viva username..

Lol

Snap.

That "Braveheart" meme reminds me of another story of cultural clumsiness.

In 1996, a sculpture of William Wallace (the Scottish nationalist hero depicted by Mel Gibson in the movie) was erected near Sterling Castle, which played an important role in the Scottish wars of independence.   The sculpture was the spitting image of Mel Gibson, who is Australian, not Scottish.  The statute then became  "among the most loathed pieces of public art in Scotland" and was regularly vandalized.   It was eventually relocated to a private collection.

Is eating a kielbasa racist?<<<<<

The unkosher dog?

>>>>if a group of Asians wore western attire  and were photographed giving one another high 5's, would you be triggered?

No.  cool

Cultural appropriation is human. Here's a fun game: try to write in only original English words.

And, by the way, I think that she looks lovely.

I still don't get it. How is wearing that dress racist?

Some people in this thread are going to hate the costumes for the Psycho Genius set at Cinco De Mylar

>>I still don't get it. How is wearing that dress racist?

Casual racism, Mark, and because you don’t get it you too are racist.

That’s okay though, because a bunch of us are also casual racists, or so I hear.

Was it racist to to dress like this on Cinco De Mayo?

I'm gonna go with no.

The young lady clearly understands how to dress for the occasion.

But, the guys holding instruments are pretty much strugglin'.smiley
