Cicada Rhythm

Nov. 16th 2015,  performing their debut album

http://southernshelter.com/category/cicada-rhythm/

I've been a daily steady diet  for the past three weeks with Van Morrison's, Veedon Fleece. There are times when I just simply cannot get enough of that underrated absolute gem of an album.

I also received a newer pressing of Laid Back for the holidays (a 180 g companion to the original one I have), and just got around to spinning it today. Superb sound quality, and every note and word played this afternoon really had me bummed about Gregg's passing and how I'll never see him again. Such a fantastic album all around, but I will go down saying "Please Call Home" is one of the best songs Gregg has ever written. The version on Laid Back is so heartfelt and rip your heart out emotion- it takes you to a place where we all have been- losing someone you love so deeply and processing and getting through it. Tough times for every human capable of love, relationships, feelings, letting go, moving on, etc. I just fucking love it!

In addition, I believe I may have posted before digging deep into Willie Nelson and just really kicking my musical ass for not exploring his catalogue sooner- oh well, maybe this is the stage of life the universe wants me to connect with his words. I don't know.

Got two Waylon Jennings as well- one is all Waylon and his guitar of stuff never released. And the other is all versions of an unreleased tune he wrote called "Here's to the Greatest." A tribute Waylon wrote to his hero, Muhammad Ali. Great fucking tribute song.

Dylan's Trouble No More  – The Bootleg Series Vol. 13 / 1979-1981, has also been getting a lot of play as well.

I listen to a ton of stuff on a daily basis, but these are the ones I'm really into at the moment.

Strong albums-in-review work EB Fox. Salut.

EB, do you have my email? I have a spare copy - well, technically not a "spare," and not a perfect copy, but I'd love to send it your way (if you want it for the nostalgic feels). If you don't have my email, I'll pop it into my profile temporarily, you can shoot me a message at your leisure. I love that disc, I'll buy it anytime I see it (usually 3-4 bucks at your favorite local record shop), and would replace it in short order; it'd be a mitzvah to send such a beautiful album to a fellow music lover...

>> 21st Century Schizoid man

Never heard of it, any good?

It's from King Crimson's first album, "In the Court of the Crimson King" (1969)

At the time, it was about as heavy a song to ever come out about the Viet Nam war, and often gets credit as one of the first "heavy metal" tunes.  Greg Lake sang and played bass on this masterpiece before he later joined ELP (Emerson Lake and Palmer)

lyrics;

Cat's foot iron claw
Neuro-surgeons scream for more
At paranoia's poison door.
Twenty first century schizoid man.

Blood rack barbed wire
Politicians' funeral pyre
Innocents raped with napalm fire
Twenty first century schizoid man.

Death seed blind man's greed
Poets' starving children bleed
Nothing he's got he really needs
Twenty first century schizoid man.

The Band;

Greg Lake – bass, lead vocals

Ian McDonald – alto saxophone

Robert Fripp – lead guitar

Michael Giles – drums

Peter Sinfield – lyrics

Musically speaking, to each their own as always, but in the day, it was a  powerful piece of music.  The album art is pretty famous too...

I'm not really into pop, but thanks

It's a pop tune alright...   (why it wasn't my fave on the album, nor a song I yearn for live, but the history is still worth sharing, rest of KC pretty obscure)

Yup cool story bro

I was up in Michigan in the fall for a hockey tournament and found a pretty cool record store. I bought quite a few albums, and currently am spinning for the first time since I bought it Friends, by Elton John. It’s a soundtrack for a movie of the same name. Sounds lovely and well worth the $5.99 I spent. :)

That one's a strong disc. Robin Kenyatta playing some smoking stuff, and the last track has Rufus Harley doing a long, droning, weird-ass bagpipe solo.

Yes. A bagpipe solo.

Cedar Walton / Clifford Jordan Quartet live at the Munch Museum, Oslo NOR 1975-07-18 (link)

Nice.

First of all, I took some great pics, and video taped the first song, nada on my camera afterwards, just a corrupted file (Arg mc shitty bam bam).

The show was in the MU ballroom of Oregon State, had maybe 75 people, very intimate (as many couches as seats).  I played there many many times back in my school days (with folks like Thara Memory, Obo Addy, etc). We walked over with a contingent of musicians, one buddy is pretty gimpy (Prankster George Walkers housemate), turns out the show was festival seating (term used lightly, lol), and we got there just before it started, no seating, so I started to harvest chairs from random places for our group of six, lol, made quite the little scene, suppose I haven't lost my touch in taking tasteless liberties and solving problems!

The show started off with the two of them,  Bill's wife (who has been doing his sound for years, met during the naked city days), and a guy, name I can't remember, but a grammy reporter (recognized him), so the first 40 minutes was an interview with the 3 of them.  Lots of great info  (yes I video taped some, brilliant / humble responses, nada, did I say Arg!).  Then the audience got to ask questions, only 3 taken, including mine:   Essentially asking about "outside" music, from Fred Frith / chainsaws / blenders,  to the focus of the ?, what was his impressions on playing with John Zorn.  We were kind of towards the back, but he stood up, with his hand over his eyes so he could see me, and made total eye contact while he gave a precious 5 minute answer, essentially having mad respect for Zorn, the playing, the compositions, etc.  Was an absolute honor to engage him!

I think they only played 6 songs, most improvs, yet totally brilliant!  The first song (recorded, arg!), was basically a play on the major scale, that started to evolve into a whole tone scale, and of course, those light / dense intervals as the improv became more complicated, involved, everything we've come to love about Bill...  tonal and textural musical mastery!  The last song was "Gold finger", rest of show mostly improv, but only about 40 mins of music.  The show was added at the last minute, most of the people in the room were OSU $ folks that donate to the music program, prominent local players, music lovers, again, small group.  Sounds like OSU is trying to start a new concert series, and Bill was kind enough to add an open date to play the show (why it wasn't advertised, put between mill city and eugene).  Was a real treat to see him in a duet setting, absolutely brilliant playing...   just wish I was sharing a link to the question I taped, and the first song scale exercise evolving into a brilliant improv piece, but alas, so it goes!

Been listening to a lot of fugazi lately, but right now I'm checking out the new Jonathan Wilson: https://t.co/Jujtza8yir?ssr=true

There's this psych band from Greece that I just started listening to called Naxatras. So fucking good.  About half instrumental, but a lot more restrained and delicate than a lot of psych I find myself listening to.  They can fizz it up when they want to.  Their new album III is FANTASTIC, very warm and analog.  Here's a taste.  Furious, I was thinking you might like these guys.

Also have been on a bluegrass roll.  Hartford, Rice, and Clements is a great album.  Also ran across Vassar's latter era jazz album Back Porch Swing.  Had not heard it before.
