Watched a show about Roxy Music. Was not impressed.

But I love this song...

They play it on the "Poolside" station I turn on when I have square passengers.

And this bassline sounds really good turned up loud...

Justin Timberlake - Man of the Woods (2018)

Man of the Woods.jpg

I just picked this CD up from the local  public library on behalf of my son and put it in the car stereo.  Some 60 minutes later, I'm hooked!

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think that this is a fantastic album.  Most notable, is it's impeccable production.  Absolute ear candy, as the vocal harmonies are gorgeous and the instrumental additions are quite pleasant (I hear deep marimba and other soft, but strong tones).  Theme seems to be 70's-80's soul and RnB in the spirit (if not the exact sound) of artists like Marvin Gaye and Earth, Wind, and Fire.  Some reggae/Caribbean themes as well.  And no annoying synthesized vocals (that I could hear) as well.

Okay, I don't really know what I'm talking about, but I do have to say that this more than exceeded my expectations for modern pop (elitist Deadhead that I am).

Planning to listen to it a few more times before returning it back to the library.

This may be my favorite track from the album:

Okay, I'm going to stop before I receive too much ridicule....

Cool. Nice cover. Let me play the track^

A Band of Bees - Octopus (2007)

I have regressed again and purchased $4 of CDs priced 10 cents each (that's quite a few for a little "coffee break" at the record store).

Admittedly, I already have this album on the computer, but thought it'd be worth a dime to have it playing in the car and on the work computer.

Nice throw-back music from the Astralwerks label.

The Beta Band - Hot Shots II (2001)  ...Good to have a tangible copy of this again.

The Black Crows - The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion (1992)  ....Never really listened to Black Crows other than what I heard on the radio.  Solid Rock, though I started to lose interest a little towards the end of the album.

The John Butler Trio - Sunrise over the Sea (2005)

Butler Trio.jpg

Great Americana/Folk-style guitar/slide/banjo player with a relatively eclectic song list, making the entirety a little bit uneven (one strings-laden tune sounded a bit Coldplay-esque).  Enough good tunes to be a keeper at this time.

Here's one instrumental tune from above:

Been listening to a lot of King Crimson lately, old & new. Had Court of the Crimson King on last night. Also, Discipline & the live Vroom Vroom double CD. Great stuff.

Got tix to see the Adrian Belew Power Trio in June. Can't wait for that one.

A couple of new songs from the upcoming Howlin Rain release, Alligator Bride. The title track sounds great, but I expected them to include Till The Morning Comes, a nice rendition that’s available on SoundCloud.

David Byrne American Utopia

^My wife doesn't like the new album.  I have mixed feelings about it, but I have the feeling that I need to listen to it a few more times to let it sink into my neurons...

That being said, I've stopped by Rasputin's to grab another bagful of 10 cent CD's, so I may not get around to recent David Byrne for a little awhile...

Right now, I'm listening to:

Aerial M - s/t (1997)  ...bought it for the packaging, but I couldn't see anything that indicated what the band's name was (the artist thanked Stereolab and Tortoise, so I had some idea what type of music it may be).  Very mellow "post-rock" music.  Simple and repetitive, sounding like two people playing quiet instrumentals late-night in someone's living room.  Some layered repetitive parts, sometimes reminding me of wind chimes moving delicately in a calm breeze.  Turns out this is by someone named David Pujo, who was a member of Slint,Tortoise, Zwan, Interpol, and others.

Album on youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REB2Nrn5zyg

Apollo 440 - Electro Glide in Blue (1997)  ....Perfectly fine jazzy-rock-electronic music from the Big Beat Era.

Issa Bagayogo - Tassoumakan (2004)  .....Nice combo of Ali Farka Toure-esque guitar work/vibe and tasteful electronic touches.  From Six Degrees Records

Bagayogo.jpg

Benevento Russo Duo - best reason to buy the sun (2004)

Ben-Russ.jpg

Let's put it this way- Van Morrison.

Johnny D - I checked out JT's album as well.  Kind of a big meh, not sure what to expect.  Seems all over the place.  I liked the title track and the Stapleton collaboration okay- albeit repetitive.  Some of the other stuff is just junkball.

^My bar was set pretty low, so that's probably why I enjoyed it as much as I did...

Hey, some of us have open ears and are willing to at least listen.  That's a good thing.

<<During a production hiatus of the popular TV Show "Gunsmoke", the film crew decided to take off and film a barnstorming blues revue making it’s way across the country and they ended up in Eugene, OR with cameras rolling to film Muddy Waters, Big Mama Thornton, Big Joe Turner and George "Harmonica" Smith as they performed in a music hall.

Bought it for the cover.  First impression is that it's good ole British blues/rock.  Then I hear Track 3 "Outside Woman Blues" and think specifically about Clapton, Mayer, Cream (though not quite that crazy good), etc.  Some of it sounds like it's coming back to American style as well.  Very enjoyable.

Great stuff^

My son and I are going to see Davey Knowles a week from tomorrow, supporting a new tour with Band of Friends (the late Rory Gallagher's band)

It's night of blues/rock dedicated to Irish guitar legend Rory Gallagher. We saw Davey this pat August on my birthday & he swore he would be back, he's back already!

Yep, new to me. I watched each of them, thanks for the exposure, 4 winds.

Sister Nancy - Bam Bam

Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass - Greatest Hits

Judit, I thought you would be pleased in a good way.  Show me something to check out?

Thanks again, 4 winds. I was pleased in a good way to hear new stuff, but it didn't hold my interest. It was fun to follow from video to video, but I'm not a rap gal. Now that my turntable is working I'm playing albums, many going back to the '60s and the '70s. Except that I think you've probably heard it all, I'll share what I'm listening to.

Today it was Maria Muldaur's Midnight at the Oasis. Have you seen who plays on that? Some very fine musicians. I got into playing it because I had a long phone call with Zoner Pelle (Lodbrok) in Norway last night and he was talking about the guitarist Amos Garrett, who plays on it along with quite a few excellent musicians (Dr. John, David Grisman, Ry Cooder, Jim Keltner, among others). I first got turned on to Maria Muldaur when she was in Jug Bands (Jim Kweskin and others) and was married to Geoff Muldaur - he is a fine blues guitarist and singer - I used to see them in the mid-sixties, making her/them part of what made some of those times so good.

I won't play my albums from A-to-Z, but having almost all of my albums from those days to now, it's fun listening to the soundtrack of my life.

>>but I'm not a rap gal

lol, were you around for the old rap battles on philzone?  Huck was a master.

Just played the title track to refresh my memory.  Yes, definitely heard this before.  Thanks for sharing and the little history lesson.

I'm still doing the A- Z with my 10-cent cd's.

David Sanborn - Upfront (1991): Very listenable and relatively lively for smooth jazz.  Sounds like a full band and I just read that Eric Clapton played on a track as well.  Somewhere between Kenny G and television show house band in spirit, but much better, IMHO.  I know, that description sounds horrible.  Good music for the morning commute.
