It's March already: WTF are you listening to?

Forums:

I've been enjoying doing the alphabetical thing with my CD-R's.  Many are from the days when I'd hit public libraries all over the Bay Area and burn baby burn.

In my car:

John Fahey - The Best of John Fahey: 1959-1977 (1977 comp) < Truly an amazing picker and his style of play, along with the minimal production, makes me feel like I'm listening to his genius doodling from his living room (not in stand-still 880 traffic).  There's a 23+ minute track that sounds like American Raga for solo acoustic guitar.  Haven't listened to it for a long time and glad that I'm rediscovering it.

Been Plowing through a Bunch of Various Bruce Hornsby and Bob Dylan Lately

Tabla Beat Science - Tala Matrix

tala-matrix.jpg

Listened to some Dave Alvin live shows from you tube since he'll be @ Solid Sound Fest, & a thread was started about him a few days ago (man I can see where Drive By Truckers' influences come from).  Currently catching up on Panic Mexico shoes from last week . . .

Whoever was in Hornsbys band in 1986 ( 9/11/86 )  They Were ON Fire ! Listening to Red Plains Sick !

^ He had a good drummer. :)

i know who the drummer was Wondering who was on Guitar ? 1986 ?

Listening to audience recording of this classic for the first time, SBD made many spins. always interesting to check out a decent audience recording of a soundboard tape I had when I was "little"

What i wanna know is....

Wtf is Floops listenin to?

Oh, and im on  Beatles top 133 on Slacker Radio...

George Marnelli is the guitar player in Bruce Hornsby and the Range. He has been Bonnie Raitt's guitar player for about 20 years now.

David Bromberg Midnight On The Water (1975)

1986 hornsby Jacob's Ladder, The Way It Is, The Long Race, Mandolin Rain, Jam > Red Plains<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< HERE  > I Know You Rider, Every Little Kiss, talker break, Wild Frontier, ??? > On the Western Skyline

http://db.etree.org/lookup_show.php?shows_key=53109

Delicate Steve - This is Steve

Ali Farka Touré - The Source (1991) < Another beautiful album with great guitar work, this time blues from the African Desert.  But we all know that, thanks to Ry Cooder.

Faust - Ravvivando (1999) < Not as playfully nutty as their early '70s albums, but a strong, heavy, repetitive collection, which gradually penetrates into your chest (play it loud).  I found this CD getting progressively more engaging from tracks 8-12, the final track being my favorite (most "traditionally" Krautrock, also reminding me a bit of Meddle era Pink Floyd?).  Or maybe I'm just making that up...

Samantha Fish - "Turn It Up", Wild Heart (2015)

The Feelies - Only Life (1988) < Nice to have some jangle to lighten things up after the Faust album, though they do share a common thread regarding Velvet Underground influences.

Next up:

Fleetwood Mac - The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac (2009 rhino comp)

was on Guitar ? 1986 ? <<<

Peter Harris ! = Ripper w /  Hornsby...........

Future

John Fred & His Playboy Band - With Glasses: The Very Best of John Fred and His Playboy Band (2001 comp) < It seems that this band's only hit was Judy in Disguise (with glasses), which somewhat tarnished the Louisiana blue-eyed soul singer's previously lucrative career as performer at fraternity house parties.  There's actually a good amount of tasty old rhythm-and-blues and soul nearly worthy of the likes of Bo Diddley (without the beat), Animals, or Box Tops.  At least one song is reminiscent of Otis Redding (but not nearly as good, obviously)  Interesting listen.

On the Beach- Neil Young

Garmarna - Vengeance (1999) < Swedish folk-rock, with a bit of electronica mixed in.  Some big beat and ambient sounds with fiddle, etc.

Motown, baby!

i know all the words.  so do you.

ck out the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever (1983)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-FqQbIHoIk

Saw that Richard Thompson is touring, but it's solo acoustic & nowhere near me, but it did inspire me to listen to some fairly recent electric shoes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxKB1Ej8Mag

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdmL0EhZS2g

Heard that his guitarist passed away recently so am not sure if he's even doing electric gigs anymore.  I see he's reuniting w/Fairport Convention at a festival in England this summer, that should be interesting.

Gilbert Gil - Acoustic (1994) < Polished live performance in the spirit of MT Unplugged; but this is Brazil and this is Gilberto Gil, so there's really no comparision.  Beautiful.

Gilberto Gil & Jorge Ben - Gil e Jorge (1975) < Rough, repetitive, rhythmic acoustic jamming/improvising - both instrumentally and vocally.  2 acoustic guitars accompanied by subtle bass and percussion.  A classic.

Bebel Gilberto - Tanto Tempo (2000) < Fondly remembering my Tropicalia/Brazilian music phase of the early 2000's.  Modern Bossa Nova, with light electronic touches.

Bebel Gilberto - Tanto Tempo Remixes (2001) < Pleasant, with more electronic touches and longer songs.

The Go-Betweens - The Friends of Rachel Worth (2000) < Nice laid-back folk-pop and Lou Reed/Velvet Underground influenced tunes.

Had this in the DVD player last night. Really good music here.

IMG_0350 (2).JPG

Gong - Acid Motherhood (2004) < Gong with members of Acid Mother's Temple and University of Errors?  Sometimes you feel like a nut.  Some good instrumentals as well.

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Spanish Dance Troupe (1999) < Welsh psychedelic-folk-pop group with nice pedal and fiddle tones.

The Grass Roots - 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Grass Roots (2001) < Over the years, I've gone from outright admiration for the hits to disdain that this was not a "real" band.  Today, I appreciate the So-Cal production values, professional Wrecking Crew musicianship, and Phil Specter/Motown influences.  Some tunes are impeccably produced (and well written), while others go over-the-top with too many horns, violins, tambourine, etc.  Interesting listen.

Was recently turned on to Greensky Bluegrass so I've been listening to them quite a bit yes

^Nice!

Macy Gray - On How Life Is/The Id (1999/2001) < A guilty pleasure

The Flock/Dinosaur Swamp

Bernhard Günter - Un Peu de Neige Salie (1993) < Avant-Guarde and a very long, quiet recording of mild static and computer-made clicks, interspersed with silence.  It's been awhile and at first I thought that this was a faulty CD-R.  A good listening exercise via headphones in a relatively quiet office.

The Common Sense band !

On scratchy old vinyl.

miller.jpg

The Sugarcubes - Life's Too Good

Guru Guru - 2000 Gurus (2004) < Relatively recent release from the Kraut Rock band.  Combo of electronic music, with world beat (mostly African) and jazz (mostly sax) touches.  Pretty good stuff.

Butch Trucks and Freight Train 8-7-2016 at Bull Run, Shirley, MA. Butch let the taper patch into the SBD.

This band was very good, had his son Vaylor and Berry Oakley Jr. in it along with Bruce Katz on keyboards.

Butch was a great drummer, this band could jam.

RIP Butch!

Stevie Coyle - Ten In One (date unknown, 2010?) < Good local folkie picker, who has a bit of a sense of humor.  This CD shows both sides.

The dB's - Falling Off the Sky (2012) < Not quite as good as their '80's stuff, but great sound and and enjoyable listen.

Bill Frisell - The Willies (2002) < Nice take on folk/bluegrass/traditional Americana.

Chicano Batman - Freedom is Free

Nice smiley.  I like the Chicano Batman album, produced by Leon Michels, one of my fave retro soul producers and players.  He did a lot of stuff with Lee Fields early daptone stuff as well.

Now on to "Eccentric Soul: The Capsoul Label".  The first Numero Group soul compilation. Classic 70's pocket soul from Ohio.

Amazon prime has a bunch of these Numero Group comps for streaming right now.

Melvins - Bases Loaded

Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean

The soundtrack of the fabulous adventure(before the movies)

Anyone hear the live TTB album that just came out (9/6/16 Fox Theatre. Oakland)

Keep on Growing from DVD

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0kXfPrHHcw

Passed on TTB when they came through last because $75 is a chunk of change, but they do deliver sweet stuff.

I've moved my ears up to DC to one of the definitive Go-Go compilations of the 80's "GO GO Crankin: Paint the White House Black".  I randomly had 2 roommates from DC in 1986 and we played the shit out of this.  Nothing obscure here, but if you want a handful of Go Go hits, this is it. Trouble Funk, EU, Soul Searchers.

The Bottomless Pit with Marshall Crenshaw.

He seems to have devoted Part 1 of this episode to warped vinyl.  It's like audio seasickness.

1st two cuts definitely warped-sounding.  Next two just sound beat to shit.

It's cool that everything he plays is from his personal collection, but he might need to up upgrade some stuff.

Waiting for him to back-announce and tell us what ties all this stuff together besides low fidelity.

EDIT: He just played I Think It's Gonna Work Out Fine.  I'd only heard Ry's instrumental version until now.

Ah.  Another all-45rpm edition.  Weird.  This is like the third time he's done this on a night I've been in Brooklyn.
