I've never seen this before, Have you? 1966 content

That is very cool.   I do see why that song did not make later rotations....

Doolittle you might enjoy reading this as it gives a nice little perspective of that summer / year.

1966 Show List

"About 110 Dead shows are known from 1966, though there were certainly more forgotten shows played. We have recordings, mostly partial, from 21 shows (19% of the shows played, but in many cases only one surviving reel or a few songs per show) -- a smattering from winter/spring, a cluster in July and a few in November/December, and nothing at all from August through October."

Garage rock Dead.   Thanks for sharing and don't recall seeing that before.

I went to my first GD show in the summer of 1966, at the Fillmore. This is sort of the sound I remember, and it wasn't wonderful to me. Or even interesting...

>summer of 1966, at the Fillmore<

((((jealous)))

That clip has been posted on the zone before, but it's still always fun to see it.

I just wish there had been more of an effort at the time to film more of what was happening. I know people weren't all walking around with video cameras in their pockets in the '60s, but still, more people should have understood the lasting significance of what was happening.

Then again, especially in those days, those who did film all tried to make it TRIPPY, MAN, and didn't do a very good job of documenting the events clearly.

I am surprised that Bill Graham didn't think about and make an effort to document those times, since he wasn't a tripper, was ten years older than everyone else and understood the importance of history. He did tape every show at Winterland starting at some point in the '70s (under the guise of showing the bands live on a screen above the stage, while he secretly recorded every one) but he didn't start soon enough.

Too bad.

Mindbender is one of my favorite GD tunes. A shame it was only performed a handful of times in '66. Stu Allen includes it in his repetoire, the main reason i enjoy Stu-he goes deep in the catalog.

I think we all forget how expensive film was.

Wonder what the specific date is and whether it was one of the acid tests. Sure seems like it.

great clip

thanks for posting :)

When was the second?

Well it was only played 4 times so I doubt it was in GGP as it's a night show. the last Matrix show and the Avalon are on Relisten so you can narrow iyt down by ;istening to them.

Wouldn't it be rad if deadco busted out mindbender?

Okay, never mind. You're right.

Judit - check that list of 66 shows linked above. What show do you think you were at and do you have any more memories about the music or the scene?

Thanks in advance for any reminiscing.

Zang, I don't know when the second was, but probably 1967. I was living in L.A. until summer 1968 but was in the Bay Area often since my friends were all there ($25 round-trip flights on PSA). I saw a lot of music in '68 and '69 til late summer when I moved North. There was a lot of music in the parks that I liked going to on both sides of the Bay. I was not into the Dead as much as just hearing music and there were quite a few smaller bands around.

Alan, I have no memory of what was played or exactly when it was. I thought June, but now I think it must have been July. I was there with friends but lost them soon enough and as a short person in darkness I was just adrift in a sea of people and swirling lights. I stayed for 2 or 3 hours and then when I was leaving one of the security guys was sweet enough to ask me if I wanted him to walk me to my car since he thought it would be safer since I was going by myself. That was so nice.
