Jane's Carousel ~ from Youngstown, OH to Brooklyn (Dumbo), NY

Forums:

The story of Jane's Carousel is really interesting. The carousel was originally purchased by and built for Idora Park, an amusement park that was in my hometown of Youngstown, OH. Idora Park experienced a tragic fire in 1984 that led to the closing of the amusement park. The carousel survived the 1984 fire thanks to the Youngstown Fire Dept. making sure it didn't burn up. David & Jane Walentas purchased the entire carousel at an auction at Idora Park in 1985 for $385,000.

Jane worked for 27 years to restore the carousel back to it's original grandeur!Talk about dedication! After she had restored it & had it up and running in Brooklyn / Dumbo, NY Hurricane Sandy came along and flooded the carousel, but it wasn't ruined. The carousel survived a fire & a flood! Brooklyn / Dumbo, NY has a true gem thanks to Jane!  I don't know how many times I rode it back in the day but I can say alot.

http://janescarousel.com/ - Jane's Carousel is a classic 3-row machine with 48 exquisitely carved horses and two superb chariots. It was created in 1922, the heyday of the American Carousel, by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company (P.T.C.) Designated as PTC. No. 61, it was originally installed in Idora Park in Youngstown, Ohio, then a prosperous steel-making city.

Hey VLZ! ....so no one likes to ride the carousel? WTF? This is one hell of a restoration!

Has anyone taken a ride on it since it's been in Brooklyn?  Stu..where are you? Maybe you & H.I.M. can go ride it one day....

Thanks for the article. I just shot an Optimum commercial there 2 weeks ago.

Very interesting, I thought it was a new carousel. They did a very nice job with the restorations and its in a lovely spot in Dumbo.

They have these big glass panels that surround the carousel that can be opened and closed now for the weather.

Nice place to take the kids, but go early (I was there at 6am), this part of Brooklyn is becoming a huge tourist destination.

Tilden Park has a carousel. We ride it sometimes.
