Tonight they play the Palladium. 25th anniversary tour. Wake of the Flood is the featured first set. I'm looking forward to this affordable accessible show.
I jut drove up to Philly area Wed to see this band at the Keswick Thr. A beautiful old semi dilapidated theater where the retiree ushers were older than the audience. Sounded great in there.
I was so impressed / intrigued that I'm doing another road tip to Jim Thorpe, PA (Penns Peak) tomorrow to see the final night of this leg of their tour.
It's definitely not a dance band. And a little different from what I remember hearing in the original incarnation.
The playing I heard was fairly slow and deliberate, but not in a Bob Weir kinda way, as the pace enabled the players to really explore various corners of the songs. In fact the music was so exploratory the fans didn't even attempt to sing along at the show I was at. (That could be due to the fact that the average age of the audience was probably 70 and they couldn't remember the words.)
2 sets: first - Wake of the Flood interpretation; second - other Dead tunes including an Estimated, Dark Star, Tennessee Jed, Scarlet (I think). Second set songs are different each night.
As expected, the music went to another level when Kimock got energized and intense. But it's a perfect vehicle for his sit down and noodle approach. The drumming was the bedrock and Pete seemed extra locked in with Kimock. Alphonso was very melodic and BLR provided lead, rhythm and counterpoint at different times. A very talented group of ensemble players.
All in all refreshing to hear a "cover band" not play covers.
The streams from tonight and last night’s NY shows both sounded magnificent. Kimock is from a different universe, and this “jazz” vehicle is exactly what brings out his most psychedelic playing. The Great American show was ridiculous.
